Researcher-teacher collaboration in MÄori-medium education: Aspects of learning for a teacher and researchers in Aotearoa New Zealand when teaching mathematics
This paper describes aspects of learning for a teacher in a MÄori-medium Year 7â8 classroom and two mathematics education researchers from a university when they collaborated on a project supporting children to develop their ideas about transformation geometry. Key principles of kaupapa MÄori (MÄori ideology) methodology such as ako (reciprocal learning), manÄkitanga (showing care, respect and kindness) and whanaungatanga (family-like relationships) were integral to the initiation and facilitation of the research. Data presented is qualitative and derived largely from wÄnanga Ä-kanohi (face-to-face discussion) between the participants. Results revealed that the collaborative partnership was conducive to developing insights into the complexities of learning mathematics in an indigenous setting. Issues of collegiality, learning mathematics in a second language, teacher mathematical knowledge and appropriate contexts for learning mathematics are analysed and discussed
"Thereness": Implications of Heidegger's "presence" for MÄori
For MÄori, the philosophical consequences of colonization are a hugely important issue, due to both the subtlety and the omnipresence of Western metaphysics. In this article I refer to the âmeta-physics of presenceâ through one major Western thinkerâMartin Heideggerâwho identified âpresenceâ as a problem for the West. He proposes that the metaphysics of presence underpins every perception in the West and that it is the fundamental mistake of philosophers since Plato but becoming ascendant with Aristotle. I identify the points of relevance within their claims and refer them to a MÄori understanding of absence. I also consider the more affective nature of Western presence, which Heidegger refers to but which must be theorized by MÄori. In the first instance I place particular emphasis on the ironies implicit in writing about metaphysics for the MÄori writer in the academy and for the things being represented in that writing. Finally, the metaphysics of presence opens up possibilities for its own instability; this Heideggerean âsaving powerâ is discussed in MÄori terms
Alternative conducted immunity tests
Conducted immunity tests are always performed by the use of CDNs in laboratories in accordance with the standard EN61000-4-6. However, it is not always possible to use CDNs because of some limitations. If the EUT (Equipment Under Test) has large dimensions or high currents, it is not, most of the time, possible to send it to an EMC laboratory or to use CDNs during the test. As a consequence, usage of BCI probes is inevitable in industry. In this paper, we compared the laboratory setup installed with CDNs and alternative setups installed directly on mains without any CDNs in terms of loop impedances and injected loop currents. We also established a link based on the loop impedances and the injected currents on the test loops between the two setups. Finally, a first serious step was taken to establish the fundamentals of alternative conducted immunity tests based on the impedance measurements of test loops for industry.Postprint (published version
Alternative Alternative Investments
Typical Alternative Investments include such categories as commodities and real estate. However, some investors have branched out into more esoteric assets such as cars and collectibles. As such, there is a growing category of managers offering such funds. See the article here, Wall Street Journal
Use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in cancer patients. An italian multicenter survey
INTRODUCTION:
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) include a wide range of products (herbs, vitamins, minerals, and probiotics) and medical practices, developed outside of the mainstream Western medicine. Patients with cancer are more likely to resort to CAM first or then in their disease history; the potential side effects as well as the costs of such practices are largely underestimated.
PATIENTS AND METHOD:
We conducted a descriptive survey in five Italian hospitals involving 468 patients with different malignancies. The survey consisted of a forty-two question questionnaire, patients were eligible if they were Italian-speaking and receiving an anticancer treatment at the time of the survey or had received an anticancer treatment no more than three years before participating in the survey.
RESULTS:
Of our patients, 48.9% said they use or have recently used CAM. The univariate analysis showed that female gender, high education, receiving treatment in a highly specialized institute and receiving chemotherapy are associated with CAM use; at the multivariate analysis high education (Odds Ratio, (OR): 1.96 95% Confidence Interval, CI, 1.27-3.05) and receiving treatment in a specialized cancer center (OR: 2.75 95% CI, 1.53-4.94) were confirmed as risk factors for CAM use.
CONCLUSION:
Roughly half of our patients receiving treatment for cancer use CAM. It is necessary that health professional explore the use of CAM with their cancer patients, educate them about potentially beneficial therapies in light of the limited available evidence of effectiveness, and work towards an integrated model of health-care provision
Worlded object and its presentation: A MÄori philosophy of language
In an era concerned with the survival of Indigenous languages, language as a general phenomenon needs to be thought of as thoroughly connected to oneâs worldview. In this article, I propose a different conception of language that sides more with what I call âthe worlding of thingsâ than linguistics. To foreshadow my speculations on language, I consider the possibility that, within the representation of one entity in perception, there exist all other entities. An entity is hence âworldedââa key aspect of the term âwhakapapaâ. I then turn to think about language as a general phenomenon for MaÌori, and its complex ability to world an entity even as it adumbrates that thingâs backdrop. I consider the verb âto beâ in that light, arguing that MaÌori identify language as a sort of gathering of entities rather than an instrument for singling out one thing as thoroughly and separably evident. This article is therefore as much about the full participation of the world as it is about language; it also aims to counter the belief that language is merely a conveyor of ideas
Variations on an American dream: alternative homeownership models
With homeownership central to the national economy and U.S. housing policy, the drop in homeownership rates could have long-term negative consequences. A growing body of research argues that alternative homeownership products, such as limited equity cooperatives and lease-to-own models, can offer participants many of the benefits of ownership while reducing some risks. However, these models are not widely implemented or understood. This article asks experts in the housing field about the prospects of greater adoption of these models.Home ownership
Spectral Amplitude-Coding Optical CDMA System Using Mach-Zehnder Interferometers
[[abstract]]In this paper, we propose a family of newly constructed codes to suppress the phase-induced intensity noise (PIIN) in spectral amplitude-coding (SAC) optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) systems. These new codes are derived from modified prime codes and their cross-correlation is not larger than one. We also present a novel SAC-OCDMA system employing the new codes together with Mach-Zehnder interferometers to eliminate the multi-user interference (MUI). Compared with the systems employing modified quadratic congruence codes (MQC codes), numerical results verify that our proposed system can more effectively suppress the PIIN and eliminate MUI. Hence, the number of simultaneously users and total transmission rate increases significantly.[[incitationindex]]SCI[[incitationindex]]EI[[booktype]]çŽæŹ[[booktype]]é»ć
Oxygen 1s x-ray-absorption near-edge structure of Zn-Ni ferrites : a comparison with the theoretical calculations
[[abstract]]We present the electronic structure of ferrimagnetic ZnxNi1-xFe2O4 compounds obtained by a combination of O K-edge x-ray-absorption measurements and first-principles spin-unrestricted calculations using the pseudofunction method. The two distinct preedge features are found to vary systematically as a function of the Zn content. From both experimental and theoretical analyses, we find that substitution of Ni with Zn enhances localization of the 3d states of Fe on the octahedral sites, so that the O 2pâFe 3d hybridized states can be resolved into two distinct twofold and threefold features.[[incitationindex]]SCI[[booktype]]çŽæŹ[[booktype]]é»ć
