Team Decision Problems with Classical and Quantum Signals
We study team decision problems where communication is not possible, but
coordination among team members can be realized via signals in a shared
environment. We consider a variety of decision problems that differ in what
team members know about one another's actions and knowledge. For each type of
decision problem, we investigate how different assumptions on the available
signals affect team performance. Specifically, we consider the cases of
perfectly correlated, i.i.d., and exchangeable classical signals, as well as
the case of quantum signals. We find that, whereas in perfect-recall trees
(Kuhn [1950], [1953]) no type of signal improves performance, in
imperfect-recall trees quantum signals may bring an improvement. Isbell [1957]
proved that in non-Kuhn trees, classical i.i.d. signals may improve
performance. We show that further improvement may be possible by use of
classical exchangeable or quantum signals. We include an example of the effect

Almost uniform sampling via quantum walks
Many classical randomized algorithms (e.g., approximation algorithms for
#P-complete problems) utilize the following random walk algorithm for {\em
almost uniform sampling} from a state space of cardinality : run a
symmetric ergodic Markov chain on for long enough to obtain a random
state from within total variation distance of the uniform
distribution over . The running time of this algorithm, the so-called {\em
mixing time} of , is , where
is the spectral gap of .
We present a natural quantum version of this algorithm based on repeated
measurements of the {\em quantum walk} . We show that it
samples almost uniformly from with logarithmic dependence on
just as the classical walk does; previously, no such
quantum walk algorithm was known. We then outline a framework for analyzing its
running time and formulate two plausible conjectures which together would imply
that it runs in time when is
the standard transition matrix of a constant-degree graph. We prove each

Quantum walk speedup of backtracking algorithms
We describe a general method to obtain quantum speedups of classical
algorithms which are based on the technique of backtracking, a standard
approach for solving constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). Backtracking
algorithms explore a tree whose vertices are partial solutions to a CSP in an
attempt to find a complete solution. Assume there is a classical backtracking
algorithm which finds a solution to a CSP on n variables, or outputs that none
exists, and whose corresponding tree contains T vertices, each vertex
corresponding to a test of a partial solution. Then we show that there is a
bounded-error quantum algorithm which completes the same task using O(sqrt(T)
n^(3/2) log n) tests. In particular, this quantum algorithm can be used to
speed up the DPLL algorithm, which is the basis of many of the most efficient
SAT solvers used in practice. The quantum algorithm is based on the use of a
quantum walk algorithm of Belovs to search in the backtracking tree. We also
discuss how, for certain distributions on the inputs, the algorithm can lead to

On the Effect of Quantum Interaction Distance on Quantum Addition Circuits
We investigate the theoretical limits of the effect of the quantum
interaction distance on the speed of exact quantum addition circuits. For this
study, we exploit graph embedding for quantum circuit analysis. We study a
logical mapping of qubits and gates of any -depth quantum adder
circuit for two -qubit registers onto a practical architecture, which limits
interaction distance to the nearest neighbors only and supports only one- and
two-qubit logical gates. Unfortunately, on the chosen -dimensional practical
architecture, we prove that the depth lower bound of any exact quantum addition
circuits is no longer , but . This
result, the first application of graph embedding to quantum circuits and
devices, provides a new tool for compiler development, emphasizes the impact of
quantum computer architecture on performance, and acts as a cautionary note
