Alkene aminations catalysed by transition metals

    Get PDF
Amines, especially long chain tertiary alkylamines, are industrially useful compounds with a relatively high commercial value. They are currently synthesised by a variety of multi-step processes, but a simple "one pot" catalytic synthesis is a highly desirable alternative with considerable potential advantages over existing methods. This thesis is concerned with possible routes to alkylated amines via amination of alkenes promoted by transition metals. The chemistry of transition metal alkene complexes relevant to amination of the alkene, is reviewed in detail. A search is made for complexes suitable for use as models with which to study the catalytic process. In an attempt to minimise nucleophilic attack at the metal centre, but maximise attack at coordinated alkenes, attempts were made to synthesise complexes containing strongly σ-donating anionic groups. In this context, reactions of palladium compounds with the dianion of N,N'-diphenyloxamide (PhNCOCONPh) are reported, which relate to the synthesis of previously unknown palladium alkene complexes. Also reported are some attempted reactions of amines with known metal alkene complexes

High quality anti-relaxation coating material for alkali atom vapor cells

We present an experimental investigation of alkali atom vapor cells coated with a high quality anti-relaxation coating material based on alkenes. The prepared cells with single compound alkene based coating showed the longest spin relaxation times which have been measured up to now with room temperature vapor cells. Suggestions are made that chemical binding of a cesium atom and an alkene molecule by attack to the C=C bond plays a crucial role in such improvement of anti-relaxation coating quality

Effect of temperature and branching on the nature and stability of alkene cracking intermediates in H-ZSM-5

Catalytic cracking of alkenes takes place at elevated temperatures in the order of 773–833 K. In this work, the nature of the reactive intermediates at typical reaction conditions is studied in H-ZSM-5 using a complementary set of modeling tools. Ab initio static and molecular dynamics simulations are performed on different C4single bond C5 alkene cracking intermediates to identify the reactive species in terms of temperature. At 323 K, the prevalent intermediates are linear alkoxides, alkene π-complexes and tertiary carbenium ions. At a typical cracking temperature of 773 K, however, both secondary and tertiary alkoxides are unlikely to exist in the zeolite channels. Instead, more stable carbenium ion intermediates are found. Branched tertiary carbenium ions are very stable, while linear carbenium ions are predicted to be metastable at high temperature. Our findings confirm that carbenium ions, rather than alkoxides, are reactive intermediates in catalytic alkene cracking at 773 K

Solvent-free semihydrogenation of acetylene alcohols in a capillary reactor coated with a Pd-Bi/TiO2 catalyst

© 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. A solvent-free semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBY) to 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol was performed in a capillary reactor (10 m long, 0.53 mm i.d.) coated with a titania supported Pd-Bi catalyst. Several coatings with different Pd/Bi ratio have been prepared. The catalysts have been characterized with SEM, TEM, EDX, XRD analysis and N 2 adsorption-desorption measurements. The maximum alkene yield of 90% was obtained at a molar Pd/Bi ratio of 11. The yield was increased to 95% in the presence of 10 mol.% pyridine in the reaction mixture. The alkene selectivity decreased with time due to leaching of Bi. The leaching was fully suppressed in the presence of 1 vol.% acetic acid in the reaction mixture. The catalyst remained stable for 100 h of continuous operation. The results demonstrate that capillary reactors provide alkene selectivity the same compared to ideal stirred tank batch reactors

Greener and sustainable method for alkene epoxidations by polymer-supported Mo(VI) catalysts

A polybenzimidazole supported Mo(VI) (PBI.Mo) catalyst has been prepared and characterised. The catalytic activities of the PBI.Mo catalyst in epoxidation of alkenes with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidant have been studied under different reaction conditions in a batch reactor. As alkene representatives we have chosen cyclohexene, limonene, α-pinene and 1-octene (a less reactive terminal alkene). The order of reactivity of the alkenes was found to be: cyclohexene>limonene>α-pinene>1-octene. The stability of each polymer catalyst was assessed by recycling a sample in batch reaction using conditions that will form the basis of the continuous process. The loss of Mo from each support has been investigated by isolating any residue from the reaction supernatant solutions, following removal of the heterogeneous polymer catalyst, and then using the residues as potential catalysts in epoxidation reactions

Raman and nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of alkali metal vapor interaction with alkene-based anti-relaxation coating

The use of anti-relaxation coatings in alkali vapor cells yields substantial performance improvements by reducing the probability of spin relaxation in wall collisions by several orders of magnitude. Some of the most effective anti-relaxation coating materials are alpha-olefins, which (as in the case of more traditional paraffin coatings) must undergo a curing period after cell manufacturing in order to achieve the desired behavior. Until now, however, it has been unclear what physicochemical processes occur during cell curing, and how they may affect relevant cell properties. We present the results of nondestructive Raman-spectroscopy and magnetic-resonance investigations of the influence of alkali metal vapor (Cs or K) on an alpha-olefin, 1-nonadecene coating the inner surface of a glass cell. It was found that during the curing process, the alkali metal catalyzes migration of the carbon-carbon double bond, yielding a mixture of cis- and trans-2-nonadecene.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

Combined experimental and computational investigations of rhodium-catalysed C-H functionalisation of pyrazoles with alkenes

Detailed experimental and computational studies have been carried out on the oxidative coupling of the alkenes C(2)H(3)Y (Y=CO(2)Me (a), Ph (b), C(O)Me (c)) with 3-aryl-5-R-pyrazoles (R=Me (1 a), Ph (1 b), CF(3) (1 c)) using a [Rh(MeCN)(3)Cp*][PF(6)](2)/Cu(OAc)(2)⋅H(2)O catalyst system. In the reaction of methyl acrylate with 1 a, up to five products (2 aa–6 aa) were formed, including the trans monovinyl product, either complexed within a novel Cu(I) dimer (2 aa) or as the free species (3 aa), and a divinyl species (6 aa); both 3 aa and 6 aa underwent cyclisation by an aza-Michael reaction to give fused heterocycles 4 aa and 5 aa, respectively. With styrene, only trans mono- and divinylation products were observed, whereas with methyl vinyl ketone, a stronger Michael acceptor, only cyclised oxidative coupling products were formed. Density functional theory calculations were performed to characterise the different migratory insertion and β-H transfer steps implicated in the reactions of 1 a with methyl acrylate and styrene. The calculations showed a clear kinetic preference for 2,1-insertion and the formation of trans vinyl products, consistent with the experimental results

We report on the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of tetrahydrofurans by reaction between epoxides and alkenes in the presence of a Lewis acid. This is an unprecedented formal [3+2] cycloaddition reaction between an epoxide and an alkene. The chemical reaction represents a very concise synthesis of tetrahydrofurans from accessible starting compounds
