Akadeemilise Usuteadlaste Seltsi fotoalbum
Photo album of theAcademic Society of TheologiansThe Academic Society of Theologians was active at the Universityof Tartu from 1921 to 1940. It united the majority of UT Facultyof Theology’s students and alumni, Estonian clergy of the Lutheranchurch and all other interested parties across the land.Members of the Society participated in the work of a committeecreated at the Faculty of Theology and intended for preparing termsin the field of theology. In 1933 to 1940 the Society published theUsuteadusline Ajakiri (Journal on Theology), as well as books. In1926 to 1940 members participated in registering religious memorialsacross Estonia. They reviewed the archives and inventory listsof churches. Details of the exterior and interior design, constructionmaterials, time of construction and other important details of churchbuildings were recorded. Drawings, copies, photographs were made.Inscriptions on tomb stone were copied, drawings were made of thetypes of funerary markers. The orientation of churches and chapelsin view of cardinal points was measured. The Academic Society of Theologians ended its activity in connectionto the dissolution of the Faculty of Theology in August 1940.The album that was donated to the museum in 1996 contains 48photographs mainly from the 1930s. All people in the photographshave been identified
Living a corporate lifestyle: The application of 'body corporate' under Islamic institutions in Malaysia
Businesses are not alien to Islam for it has been the practice of Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h. The Holy Prophet himself was a successful trader. In Islam, particularly the Arab countries, they refer the entity carrying out the
businesses and commercials as ‘syirkah’ vis-à-vis corporation or company under Western concept. Whilst the Western distinguishes company from partnership, syirkah in Islam refer to both company and partnership.Nevertheless, the different types of these syirkah are reflected in the diversity of their categories, which comprised of al-‘inan, al-abdan, mudharabah, wujuh and mudharabah. The essential part of a syirkah is that it is contractbased, where individuals came together and entered into a contract with an agreement to distribute the profits amongst themselves. Individuals are the backbone of a syirkah in Islam. Whereas, a company in the conventional system focuses on the concept of body corporate rather than natural human
being, i.e. individuals. In this modern world, the applications of the notion ‘body corporate’ are also integrated into some of Islamic institutions including those that were established in Malaysia. The Islamic institutions are now leading a corporate way of lifestyle. This paper will highlight some of the Islamic institutions in Malaysia and the analysis of legal provisions which set them up as corporate entities. In the same parallel also, the author will identify the rights and criteria arising from such body corporate – and the Islamic perception on such corporate lifestyle
A Stereochemical Test of a Proposed Structural Feature of the Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor
Understanding the gating mechanism of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) and similar channels constitutes a significant challenge in chemical neurobiology. In the present work, we use a stereochemical probe to evaluate a proposed pin-into-hydrophobic socket mechanism for the αVal46 side chain of the nAChR. Utilizing nonsense suppression methodology we incorporated isoleucine (Ile), O-methyl threonine (Omt) and threonine (Thr) as well as their side chain epimers (the allo counterparts). Surprisingly, our results indicate that only the pro-S methyl group of the αVal46 side chain is sensitive to changes in hydrophobicity, consistent with the precise geometrical requirements of the pin-into-socket mechanism
Investigation on rotating ailerons
The effectiveness of rotating ailerons in a subsonic flow is theoretically studied to evaluate their capability in comparison to conventional ailerons. The analysis is based on the cortex lattice approach of Byelotserkovskii (1965) for different wing planforms of small and large aspect ratios. The rolling moment coefficient obtained with the rotating ailerons with a span equal to 22% of the wing span is higher than that for the conventional ailerons of almost double the span. The effectiveness of the rotating ailerons decreases with reduction in the wing aspect ratio, although it is possible to reduce the aileron size for required rolling capabilit
