    Adaptive high-performance velocity evaluation based on a high resolution time-to-digital converter

    In this paper, an improved method is presented to derive the velocity information in a pulse-number measurement/time-duration-type digital tachometer by processing its pulse train. The method incorporates encoder pulse counting and very accurate time measurement. The velocity sampling interval is not constant but is continuously modified. An adaptive algorithm provides a wide-range velocity evaluation with very good accuracy. The adaptation of the next sampling period, according to the instant velocity, results in better response times at low speeds and a very high accuracy at medium and high speeds. Compared to currently known methods, the time measurement resolution and, consequently, the velocity accuracy is improved by using the proposed method due to the inclusion of high-resolution time-to-digital converters in the design. The proposed configuration can be implemented in specific hardware by using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), thus saving the computational power of the digital signal processor that supervises the system for higher level control tasks

    The adaptive potential of video guidance technology for earth orbital and interplanetary missions was explored. The application of video acquisition, pointing, tracking, and navigation technology was considered to three primary missions: planetary landing, earth resources satellite, and spacecraft rendezvous and docking. It was found that an imaging system can be mechanized to provide a spacecraft or satellite with a considerable amount of adaptability with respect to its environment. It also provides a level of autonomy essential to many future missions and enhances their data gathering ability. The feasibility of an autonomous video guidance system capable of observing a planetary surface during terminal descent and selecting the most acceptable landing site was successfully demonstrated in the laboratory. The techniques developed for acquisition, pointing, and tracking show promise for recognizing and tracking coastlines, rivers, and other constituents of interest. Routines were written and checked for rendezvous, docking, and station-keeping functions

    Frequency domain laser velocimeter signal processor

    A new scheme for processing signals from laser velocimeter systems is described. The technique utilizes the capabilities of advanced digital electronics to yield a signal processor capable of operating in the frequency domain maximizing the information obtainable from each signal burst. This allows a sophisticated approach to signal detection and processing, with a more accurate measurement of the chirp frequency resulting in an eight-fold increase in measurable signals over the present high-speed burst counter technology. Further, the required signal-to-noise ratio is reduced by a factor of 32, allowing measurements within boundary layers of wind tunnel models. Measurement accuracy is also increased up to a factor of five

    Fabrication and test of digital output interface devices for gas turbine electronic controls

    A program was conducted to develop an innovative digital output interface device, a digital effector with optical feedback of the fuel metering valve position, for future electronic controls for gas turbine engines. A digital effector (on-off solenoids driven directly by on-off signals from a digital electronic controller) with optical position feedback was fabricated, coupled with the fuel metering valve, and tested under simulated engine operating conditions. The testing indicated that a digital effector with optical position feedback is a suitable candidate, with proper development for future digital electronic gas turbine controls. The testing also identified several problem areas which would have to be overcome in a final production configuration

    The development of the drivetrain for a new series of urban electric buses is presented in the paper. The traction and design properties of several drive variants are compared. The efficiency of the drive was tested using simulation calculations of the vehicle rides based on data from real bus lines in Prague.
