    Neuronal assembly dynamics in supervised and unsupervised learning scenarios

    The dynamic formation of groups of neuronsā€”neuronal assembliesā€”is believed to mediate cognitive phenomena at many levels, but their detailed operation and mechanisms of interaction are still to be uncovered. One hypothesis suggests that synchronized oscillations underpin their formation and functioning, with a focus on the temporal structure of neuronal signals. In this context, we investigate neuronal assembly dynamics in two complementary scenarios: the first, a supervised spike pattern classification task, in which noisy variations of a collection of spikes have to be correctly labeled; the second, an unsupervised, minimally cognitive evolutionary robotics tasks, in which an evolved agent has to cope with multiple, possibly conflicting, objectives. In both cases, the more traditional dynamical analysis of the systemā€™s variables is paired with information-theoretic techniques in order to get a broader picture of the ongoing interactions with and within the network. The neural network model is inspired by the Kuramoto model of coupled phase oscillators and allows one to fine-tune the network synchronization dynamics and assembly configuration. The experiments explore the computational power, redundancy, and generalization capability of neuronal circuits, demonstrating that performance depends nonlinearly on the number of assemblies and neurons in the network and showing that the framework can be exploited to generate minimally cognitive behaviors, with dynamic assembly formation accounting for varying degrees of stimuli modulation of the sensorimotor interactions

    Realtime Profiling of Fine-Grained Air Quality Index Distribution using UAV Sensing

    Given significant air pollution problems, air quality index (AQI) monitoring has recently received increasing attention. In this paper, we design a mobile AQI monitoring system boarded on unmanned-aerial-vehicles (UAVs), called ARMS, to efficiently build fine-grained AQI maps in realtime. Specifically, we first propose the Gaussian plume model on basis of the neural network (GPM-NN), to physically characterize the particle dispersion in the air. Based on GPM-NN, we propose a battery efficient and adaptive monitoring algorithm to monitor AQI at the selected locations and construct an accurate AQI map with the sensed data. The proposed adaptive monitoring algorithm is evaluated in two typical scenarios, a two-dimensional open space like a roadside park, and a three-dimensional space like a courtyard inside a building. Experimental results demonstrate that our system can provide higher prediction accuracy of AQI with GPM-NN than other existing models, while greatly reducing the power consumption with the adaptive monitoring algorithm

    An agent-driven semantical identifier using radial basis neural networks and reinforcement learning

    Due to the huge availability of documents in digital form, and the deception possibility raise bound to the essence of digital documents and the way they are spread, the authorship attribution problem has constantly increased its relevance. Nowadays, authorship attribution,for both information retrieval and analysis, has gained great importance in the context of security, trust and copyright preservation. This work proposes an innovative multi-agent driven machine learning technique that has been developed for authorship attribution. By means of a preprocessing for word-grouping and time-period related analysis of the common lexicon, we determine a bias reference level for the recurrence frequency of the words within analysed texts, and then train a Radial Basis Neural Networks (RBPNN)-based classifier to identify the correct author. The main advantage of the proposed approach lies in the generality of the semantic analysis, which can be applied to different contexts and lexical domains, without requiring any modification.     Scalable and Sustainable Deep Learning via Randomized Hashing

    Current deep learning architectures are growing larger in order to learn from complex datasets. These architectures require giant matrix multiplication operations to train millions of parameters. Conversely, there is another growing trend to bring deep learning to low-power, embedded devices. The matrix operations, associated with both training and testing of deep networks, are very expensive from a computational and energy standpoint. We present a novel hashing based technique to drastically reduce the amount of computation needed to train and test deep networks. Our approach combines recent ideas from adaptive dropouts and randomized hashing for maximum inner product search to select the nodes with the highest activation efficiently. Our new algorithm for deep learning reduces the overall computational cost of forward and back-propagation by operating on significantly fewer (sparse) nodes. As a consequence, our algorithm uses only 5% of the total multiplications, while keeping on average within 1% of the accuracy of the original model. A unique property of the proposed hashing based back-propagation is that the updates are always sparse. Due to the sparse gradient updates, our algorithm is ideally suited for asynchronous and parallel training leading to near linear speedup with increasing number of cores. We demonstrate the scalability and sustainability (energy efficiency) of our proposed algorithm via rigorous experimental evaluations on several real datasets

    Detection of Lying Electrical Vehicles in Charging Coordination Application Using Deep Learning

    The simultaneous charging of many electric vehicles (EVs) stresses the distribution system and may cause grid instability in severe cases. The best way to avoid this problem is by charging coordination. The idea is that the EVs should report data (such as state-of-charge (SoC) of the battery) to run a mechanism to prioritize the charging requests and select the EVs that should charge during this time slot and defer other requests to future time slots. However, EVs may lie and send false data to receive high charging priority illegally. In this paper, we first study this attack to evaluate the gains of the lying EVs and how their behavior impacts the honest EVs and the performance of charging coordination mechanism. Our evaluations indicate that lying EVs have a greater chance to get charged comparing to honest EVs and they degrade the performance of the charging coordination mechanism. Then, an anomaly based detector that is using deep neural networks (DNN) is devised to identify the lying EVs. To do that, we first create an honest dataset for charging coordination application using real driving traces and information revealed by EV manufacturers, and then we also propose a number of attacks to create malicious data. We trained and evaluated two models, which are the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and the gated recurrent unit (GRU) using this dataset and the GRU detector gives better results. Our evaluations indicate that our detector can detect lying EVs with high accuracy and low false positive rate

    Decentralised Control of Adaptive Sampling in Wireless Sensor Networks

    The efficient allocation of the limited energy resources of a wireless sensor network in a way that maximises the information value of the data collected is a significant research challenge. Within this context, this paper concentrates on adaptive sampling as a means of focusing a sensorā€™s energy consumption on obtaining the most important data. Specifically, we develop a principled information metric based upon Fisher information and Gaussian process regression that allows the information content of a sensorā€™s observations to be expressed. We then use this metric to derive three novel decentralised control algorithms for information-based adaptive sampling which represent a trade-off in computational cost and optimality. These algorithms are evaluated in the context of a deployed sensor network in the domain of flood monitoring. The most computationally efficient of the three is shown to increase the value of information gathered by approximately 83%, 27%, and 8% per day compared to benchmarks that sample in a naive non-adaptive manner, in a uniform non-adaptive manner, and using a state-of-the-art adaptive sampling heuristic (USAC) correspondingly. Moreover, our algorithm collects information whose total value is approximately 75% of the optimal solution (which requires an exponential, and thus impractical, amount of time to compute)
