ModDrop: adaptive multi-modal gesture recognition
We present a method for gesture detection and localisation based on
multi-scale and multi-modal deep learning. Each visual modality captures
spatial information at a particular spatial scale (such as motion of the upper
body or a hand), and the whole system operates at three temporal scales. Key to
our technique is a training strategy which exploits: i) careful initialization
of individual modalities; and ii) gradual fusion involving random dropping of
separate channels (dubbed ModDrop) for learning cross-modality correlations
while preserving uniqueness of each modality-specific representation. We
present experiments on the ChaLearn 2014 Looking at People Challenge gesture
recognition track, in which we placed first out of 17 teams. Fusing multiple
modalities at several spatial and temporal scales leads to a significant
increase in recognition rates, allowing the model to compensate for errors of
the individual classifiers as well as noise in the separate channels.
Futhermore, the proposed ModDrop training technique ensures robustness of the
classifier to missing signals in one or several channels to produce meaningful
predictions from any number of available modalities. In addition, we
demonstrate the applicability of the proposed fusion scheme to modalities of
arbitrary nature by experiments on the same dataset augmented with audio.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
Deep Learning for Detecting Multiple Space-Time Action Tubes in Videos
In this work, we propose an approach to the spatiotemporal localisation
(detection) and classification of multiple concurrent actions within temporally
untrimmed videos. Our framework is composed of three stages. In stage 1,
appearance and motion detection networks are employed to localise and score
actions from colour images and optical flow. In stage 2, the appearance network
detections are boosted by combining them with the motion detection scores, in
proportion to their respective spatial overlap. In stage 3, sequences of
detection boxes most likely to be associated with a single action instance,
called action tubes, are constructed by solving two energy maximisation
problems via dynamic programming. While in the first pass, action paths
spanning the whole video are built by linking detection boxes over time using
their class-specific scores and their spatial overlap, in the second pass,
temporal trimming is performed by ensuring label consistency for all
constituting detection boxes. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm
on the challenging UCF101, J-HMDB-21 and LIRIS-HARL datasets, achieving new
state-of-the-art results across the board and significantly increasing
detection speed at test time. We achieve a huge leap forward in action
detection performance and report a 20% and 11% gain in mAP (mean average
precision) on UCF-101 and J-HMDB-21 datasets respectively when compared to the

A robust and efficient video representation for action recognition
This paper introduces a state-of-the-art video representation and applies it
to efficient action recognition and detection. We first propose to improve the
popular dense trajectory features by explicit camera motion estimation. More
specifically, we extract feature point matches between frames using SURF
descriptors and dense optical flow. The matches are used to estimate a
homography with RANSAC. To improve the robustness of homography estimation, a
human detector is employed to remove outlier matches from the human body as
human motion is not constrained by the camera. Trajectories consistent with the
homography are considered as due to camera motion, and thus removed. We also
use the homography to cancel out camera motion from the optical flow. This
results in significant improvement on motion-based HOF and MBH descriptors. We
further explore the recent Fisher vector as an alternative feature encoding
approach to the standard bag-of-words histogram, and consider different ways to
include spatial layout information in these encodings. We present a large and
varied set of evaluations, considering (i) classification of short basic
actions on six datasets, (ii) localization of such actions in feature-length
movies, and (iii) large-scale recognition of complex events. We find that our
improved trajectory features significantly outperform previous dense
trajectories, and that Fisher vectors are superior to bag-of-words encodings
for video recognition tasks. In all three tasks, we show substantial
improvements over the state-of-the-art results
The THUMOS Challenge on Action Recognition for Videos "in the Wild"
Automatically recognizing and localizing wide ranges of human actions has
crucial importance for video understanding. Towards this goal, the THUMOS
challenge was introduced in 2013 to serve as a benchmark for action
recognition. Until then, video action recognition, including THUMOS challenge,
had focused primarily on the classification of pre-segmented (i.e., trimmed)
videos, which is an artificial task. In THUMOS 2014, we elevated action
recognition to a more practical level by introducing temporally untrimmed
videos. These also include `background videos' which share similar scenes and
backgrounds as action videos, but are devoid of the specific actions. The three
editions of the challenge organized in 2013--2015 have made THUMOS a common
benchmark for action classification and detection and the annual challenge is
widely attended by teams from around the world.
In this paper we describe the THUMOS benchmark in detail and give an overview
of data collection and annotation procedures. We present the evaluation
protocols used to quantify results in the two THUMOS tasks of action
classification and temporal detection. We also present results of submissions
to the THUMOS 2015 challenge and review the participating approaches.
Additionally, we include a comprehensive empirical study evaluating the
differences in action recognition between trimmed and untrimmed videos, and how
well methods trained on trimmed videos generalize to untrimmed videos. We
conclude by proposing several directions and improvements for future THUMOS

Sympathy for the Details: Dense Trajectories and Hybrid Classification Architectures for Action Recognition
Action recognition in videos is a challenging task due to the complexity of the spatio-temporal patterns to model and the difficulty to acquire and learn on large quantities of video data. Deep learning, although a breakthrough for Image classification and showing promise for videos, has still not clearly superseded action recognition methods using hand-crafted features, even when training on
massive datasets. In this paper, we introduce hybrid video classification architectures based on carefully designed unsupervised representations of hand-crafted
spatio-temporal features classified by supervised deep networks. As we show in our experiments on five popular benchmarks for action recognition, our hybrid
model combines the best of both worlds: it is data efficient (trained on 150 to 10000 short clips) and yet improves significantly on the state of the art, including
recent deep models trained on millions of manually labelled images and videos
