The system of academic advising is used across institutions of higher education to promote the holistic development of students as they work towards their academic, personal, and social endeavors (Hunter & White, 2004). Academic advisors can therefore play a key role in ensuring the academic success and overall well-being of the students they work with (Drake, 2011). More speci cally, culturally competent academic advisors serve as a pivotal resource and support service for students of Color. This literature review explores the various characteristics of, approaches to, and perspectives of academic advising, and provides implications for using culturally-sensitive academic advising practices when working with students of Color at predominantly White institutions

More Guidance, Better Results? Three-Year Effects of an Enhanced Student Services Program at Two Community Colleges

In a program at Lorain County Community College and Owens Community College in Ohio, low-income students received enhanced counseling and advising services and were eligible to receive a modest stipend for two semesters. The program improved academic outcomes during the second semester and continued to have a positive effect on registration rates in the semester that followed, but it did not have any meaningful effects on academic outcomes in subsequent semesters

Academic advising in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources : an investigation of undergraduate students' needs and faculty performance

University of Missouri-Columbia 2008.The purpose of this study was three-fold: 1) assess the importance of academic advising characteristics as perceived by undergraduate students in the College, 2) examine faculty performance, as perceived by advisees, with regard to the academic advising characteristics, and 3) identify factors that influence students' cademic advising needs and satisfaction. The Faculty Advising Instrument and Insight Inventory[copyright] were distributed via email to all students enrolled in the College (N = 1619). A total of 726 students (44.84%) completed the instrument. Overall, students reported a high level of satisfaction with faculty advisors' performance. Results indicated that students' academic advising needs and their evaluation of faculty performance vary little based on sex, academic level and undergraduate degree program. Using the Borich needs assessment model, ten items were identified for potential enhancement. The three items with largest mean weighted discrepancy scores related to identifying employment opportunities after college, providing information about financial assistance and being aware of academic progress. The Insight Inventory[copyright] indicated that the largest proportion of students were slightly indirect, very outgoing, very steady, and moderate when dealing with details. No relationships were found between students' personality/communication profiles and academic advising needs.Includes bibliographical references

Lessons Learned from Development of a Software Tool to Support Academic Advising

We detail some lessons learned while designing and testing a decision-theoretic advising support tool for undergraduates at a large state university. Between 2009 and 2011 we conducted two surveys of over 500 students in multiple majors and colleges. These surveys asked students detailed questions about their preferences concerning course selection, advising, and career paths. We present data from this study which may be helpful for faculty and staff who advise undergraduate students.
