Amortized Rotation Cost in AVL Trees

An AVL tree is the original type of balanced binary search tree. An insertion in an nn-node AVL tree takes at most two rotations, but a deletion in an nn-node AVL tree can take Θ(logn)\Theta(\log n). A natural question is whether deletions can take many rotations not only in the worst case but in the amortized case as well. A sequence of nn successive deletions in an nn-node tree takes O(n)O(n) rotations, but what happens when insertions are intermixed with deletions? Heaupler, Sen, and Tarjan conjectured that alternating insertions and deletions in an nn-node AVL tree can cause each deletion to do Ω(logn)\Omega(\log n) rotations, but they provided no construction to justify their claim. We provide such a construction: we show that, for infinitely many nn, there is a set EE of {\it expensive} nn-node AVL trees with the property that, given any tree in EE, deleting a certain leaf and then reinserting it produces a tree in EE, with the deletion having done Θ(logn)\Theta(\log n) rotations. One can do an arbitrary number of such expensive deletion-insertion pairs. The difficulty in obtaining such a construction is that in general the tree produced by an expensive deletion-insertion pair is not the original tree. Indeed, if the trees in EE have even height kk, 2k/22^{k/2} deletion-insertion pairs are required to reproduce the original tree

Theory of the algebraic vortex liquid in an anisotropic spin-(1/2) triangular antiferromagnet

We explore spin-(1/2) triangular antiferromagnets with both easy-plane and lattice exchange anisotropies by employing a dual vortex mapping followed by a fermionization of the vortices. Over a broad range of exchange anisotropy, this approach leads naturally to a "critical" spin liquid—the algebraic vortex liquid—which appears to be distinct from other known spin liquids. We present a detailed characterization of this state, which is described in terms of noncompact QED3 with an emergent SU(4) symmetry. Descendant phases of the algebraic vortex liquid are also explored, which include the Kalmeyer-Laughlin spin liquid, a variety of magnetically ordered states such as the well-known coplanar spiral state, and supersolids. In the range of exchange anisotropy where the "square lattice" Néel ground state arises, we demonstrate that anomalous "roton" minima in the excitation spectrum recently reported in series expansions can be accounted for within our approach

Parallel dictionaries with local rules on AVL and brother trees

    Get PDF
We present a set of local rules to deal with dictionaries, having as a main advantage their possible scheduling in a highly synchronized way to get parallel dictionaries on AVLs. Up to now trees used in massively parallel dictionaries needed to have all the leaves at the same depth, such as 2--3 trees. Therefore, it was possible (in insertions and deletions) to reconstruct the tree bottom-up in a very regular fashion, as a pipeline of plane waves moving up. On AVL trees the situation looks different because leaves can have different depth, therefore any wave in a pipeline is highly irregular. To solve this problem we define {\it virtual} plane waves allowing us to develop an EREW dictionary for kk keys with kk processors and time O(logn+logk)O (\log n + \log k). Later on we generalize the sePostprint (published version

Algebraic vortex liquid in spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnets: Scenario for Cs_2CuCl_4

    Get PDF
Motivated by inelastic neutron scattering data on Cs_2CuCl_4, we explore spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnets with both spatial and easy-plane exchange anisotropies, the latter due to an observed Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Exploiting a duality mapping followed by a fermionization of the dual vortex degrees of freedom, we find a novel "critical" spin-liquid phase described in terms of Dirac fermions with an emergent global SU(4) symmetry minimally coupled to a non-compact U(1) gauge field. This ``algebraic vortex liquid" supports gapless spin excitations and universal power-law correlations in the dynamical spin structure factor which are consistent with those observed in Cs_2CuCl_4. We suggest future neutron scattering experiments that should help distinguish between the algebraic vortex liquid and other spin liquids and quantum critical points previously proposed in the context of Cs_2CuCl_4.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; minor revisions, momenta in Fig. 2 correcte

Electron spin relaxation in bulk GaAs for doping densities close to the metal-to-insulator transition

    Get PDF
We have measured the electron spin relaxation rate and the integrated spin noise power in n-doped GaAs for temperatures between 4 K and 80 K and for doping concentrations ranging from 2.7 x 10^{-15} cm^{-3} to 8.8 x 10^{-16} cm^{-3} using spin noise spectroscopy. The temperature dependent measurements show a clear transition from localized to free electrons for the lower doped samples and confirm mainly free electrons at all temperatures for the highest doped sample. While the sample at the metal-insulator-transition shows the longest spin relaxation time at low temperatures, a clear crossing of the spin relaxation rates is observed at 70 K and the highest doped sample reveals the longest spin relaxation time above 70 K.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
