Whose job is it?: parents' concerns about the needs of their children with language problems

    Get PDF
This study examined the perspectives of parents of children with specific speech and language difficulties (SSLD) in the UK and described the issues they raised when considering provision to meet their children's needs. The study utilised a mixed methods approach. Data from interviews were analyzed using a computer-based qualitative interview analysis method (ATLAS/ti), with reference to evidence from a parent-completed rating scale and assessments of the children’s language and educational development. The issues generated by the analyses were considered in relation to whether the child attended mainstream or special school. Results are discussed in the context of current educational policies for inclusive education and parental participation in meeting children’s educational and social needs

Desarrollo a escala humana de los inmigrantes venezolanos en San José de Cúcuta

The present study determines the differences between living conditions of Venezuelan immigrants in the border city of Cúcuta, Colombia, and their comprehension and vision of development from the approach of the human scale development. With focal interviews, a qualitative methodology was applied, which allowed the construction of an axiological and existential needs matrix with the Atlas Ti software, semantic networks of their current condition and development vision were also developed. The results suggest that: i) poverty exists in each of the needs studied; ii) the idea of development is determined to a greater extent, by economic stability; iii) there is no human scale development in the host society, which cuts off the possibility of improving quality of life. F, G, K, M Spectral Standards in the Y Band (0.95-1.11 um)

We take advantage of good atmospheric transparency and the availability of high quality instrumentation in the 1 um near-infrared atmospheric window to present a grid of F, G, K, and M spectral standards observed at high spectral resolution (R ~ 25,000). In addition to a spectral atlas, we present a catalog of atomic line absorption features in the 0.95-1.11 um range. The catalog includes a wide range of line excitation potentials, from 0-13 eV, arising from neutral and singly ionized species, most frequently those of Fe I and Ti I at low excitation, Cr I, Fe I, and Si I at moderate excitation, and C I, S I, and Si I having relatively high excitation. The spectra also include several prominent molecular bands from CN and FeH. For the atomic species, we analyze trends in the excitation potential, line depth, and equivalent width across the grid of spectroscopic standards to identify temperature and surface gravity diagnostics near 1 um. We identify the line ratios that appear especially useful for spectral typing as those involving Ti I and C I or S I, which are temperature sensitive in opposite directions, and Sr II, which is gravity sensitive at all spectral types. Ascii versions of all spectra are available to download with the electronic version of the journal.Comment: 40 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables, spectra available for download with source file, updated to mirror published versio

The subgiant branch of omega Cen seen through high-resolution spectroscopy. II. The most metal-rich population

We analyze spectra of 18 stars belonging to the faintest subgiant branch in omega Centauri (the SGB-a), obtained with GIRAFFE@VLT at a resolution o R~17000 and a S/N ratio between 25 and 50. We measure abundances of Al, Ba, Ca, Fe, Ni, Si, and Ti and we find that these stars have =-0.73 +/- 0.14 dex, similarly to the corresponding red giant branch population (the RGB-a). We also measure =+0.40 +/- 0.16 dex, and =+0.87 +/- 0.23 dex, in general agreement with past studies. It is very interesting to note that we found a uniform Al abundance, =+0.32 +/- 0.14 dex, for all the 18 SGB-a stars analysed here, thus supporting past evidence that the usual (anti-)correlations are not present in this population, and suggesting a non globular cluster-like origin of this particular population. In the dwarf galaxy hypothesis for the formation of omega Cen, this population might be the best candidate for the field population of its putative parent galaxy, although some of its properties appear contradictory. It has also been suggested that the most metal-rich population in omega Cen is significantly enriched in helium. If this is true, the traditional abundance analysis techniques, based on model atmospheres with normal helium content, might lead to errors. We have computed helium enhanced atmospheres for three stars in our sample and verified that the abundance errors due to the use of non-enhanced atmospheres are negligible. Additional, indirect support to the enhanced helium content of the SGB-a population comes from our Li upper limits.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&
