    Adaptive fault tolerant checkpointing algorithm for cluster based mobile Ad Hoc networks

    Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) is a type of wireless network consisting of a set of self-configured mobile hosts that can communicate with each other using wireless links without the assistance of any fixed infrastructure. This has made possible to create a distributed mobile computing application and has also brought several new challenges in distributed algorithm design. Checkpointing is a well explored fault tolerance technique for the wired and cellular mobile networks. However, it is not directly applicable to MANET due to its dynamic topology, limited availability of stable storage, partitioning and the absence of fixed infrastructure. In this paper, we propose an adaptive, coordinated and non-blocking checkpointing algorithm to provide fault tolerance in cluster based MANET, where only minimum number of mobile hosts in the cluster should take checkpoints.     Checkpoint is defined as a fault tolerant technique that is a designated place in a program at which normal processing is interrupted specifically to preserve the status information necessary to allow resumption of processing at a later time. If there is a failure, computation may be restarted from the current checkpoint instead of repeating the computation from beginning. Checkpoint based rollback recovery is one of the widely used technique used in various areas like scientific computing, database, telecommunication and critical applications in distributed and mobile ad hoc network. The mobile ad hoc network architecture is one consisting of a set of self configure mobile hosts capable of communicating with each other without the assistance of base stations. The main problems of this environment are insufficient power and limited storage capacity, so the checkpointing is major challenge in mobile ad hoc network.     Supporting disconnected operations in mobile computing

    Mobile computing has enabled users to seamlessly access databases even when they are on the move. However, in the absence of readily available high-quality communication, users are often forced to operate disconnected from the network. As a result, software applications have to be redesigned to take advantage of this environment while accommodating the new challenges posed by mobility. In particular, there is a need for replication and synchronization services in order to guarantee availability of data and functionality, (including updates) in disconnected mode. To this end we propose a scalable and highly available data replication and management service. The proposed replication technique is compared with a baseline replication technique and shown to exhibit high availability, fault tolerance and minimal access times of the data and services, which are very important in an environment with low-quality communication links.<br /

    NASA Constellation Distributed Simulation Middleware Trade Study

    This paper presents the results of a trade study designed to assess three distributed simulation middleware technologies for support of the NASA Constellation Distributed Space Exploration Simulation (DSES) project and Test and Verification Distributed System Integration Laboratory (DSIL). The technologies are the High Level Architecture (HLA), the Test and Training Enabling Architecture (TENA), and an XML-based variant of Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS-XML) coupled with the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP). According to the criteria and weights determined in this study, HLA scores better than the other two for DSES as well as the DSIL
