Deep Learning in the Automotive Industry: Applications and Tools
Deep Learning refers to a set of machine learning techniques that utilize
neural networks with many hidden layers for tasks, such as image
classification, speech recognition, language understanding. Deep learning has
been proven to be very effective in these domains and is pervasively used by
many Internet services. In this paper, we describe different automotive uses
cases for deep learning in particular in the domain of computer vision. We
surveys the current state-of-the-art in libraries, tools and infrastructures
(e.\,g.\ GPUs and clouds) for implementing, training and deploying deep neural
networks. We particularly focus on convolutional neural networks and computer
vision use cases, such as the visual inspection process in manufacturing plants
and the analysis of social media data. To train neural networks, curated and
labeled datasets are essential. In particular, both the availability and scope
of such datasets is typically very limited. A main contribution of this paper
is the creation of an automotive dataset, that allows us to learn and
automatically recognize different vehicle properties. We describe an end-to-end
deep learning application utilizing a mobile app for data collection and
process support, and an Amazon-based cloud backend for storage and training.
For training we evaluate the use of cloud and on-premises infrastructures
(including multiple GPUs) in conjunction with different neural network
architectures and frameworks. We assess both the training times as well as the
accuracy of the classifier. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the
trained classifier in a real world setting during manufacturing process.Comment: 10 page
A Survey on Deep Learning-based Architectures for Semantic Segmentation on 2D images
Semantic segmentation is the pixel-wise labelling of an image. Since the
problem is defined at the pixel level, determining image class labels only is
not acceptable, but localising them at the original image pixel resolution is
necessary. Boosted by the extraordinary ability of convolutional neural
networks (CNN) in creating semantic, high level and hierarchical image
features; excessive numbers of deep learning-based 2D semantic segmentation
approaches have been proposed within the last decade. In this survey, we mainly
focus on the recent scientific developments in semantic segmentation,
specifically on deep learning-based methods using 2D images. We started with an
analysis of the public image sets and leaderboards for 2D semantic
segmantation, with an overview of the techniques employed in performance
evaluation. In examining the evolution of the field, we chronologically
categorised the approaches into three main periods, namely pre-and early deep
learning era, the fully convolutional era, and the post-FCN era. We technically
analysed the solutions put forward in terms of solving the fundamental problems
of the field, such as fine-grained localisation and scale invariance. Before
drawing our conclusions, we present a table of methods from all mentioned eras,
with a brief summary of each approach that explains their contribution to the
field. We conclude the survey by discussing the current challenges of the field

Automatic Recognition of Object Use Based on Wireless Motion Sensors
In this paper, we present a method for automatic, online detection of a user’s interaction with objects. This represents an essential building block for improving the performance of distributed activity recognition systems. Our\ud
method is based on correlating features extracted from motion sensors worn by the user and attached to objects. We present a complete implementation of the idea, using miniaturized wireless sensor nodes equipped with motion sensors. We achieve a recognition accuracy of 97% for a target response time of 2 seconds. The implementation is lightweight, with low communication bandwidth and processing needs.
