    This volume contains the papers presented at the Sixth Portuguese XML Conference, called XATA (XML, Aplicações e Tecnologias Associadas), held in Évora, Portugal, 14-15 February, 2008. The conference followed on from a successful series held throughout Portugal in the last years: XATA2003 was held in Braga, XATA2004 was held in Porto, XATA2005 was held in Braga, XATA2006 was held in Portalegre and XATA2007 was held in Lisboa. Dued to research evaluation criteria that are being used to evaluate researchers and research centers national conferences are becoming deserted. Many did not manage to gather enough submissions to proceed in this scenario. XATA made it through. However with a large decrease in the number of submissions. In this edition a special meeting will join the steering committee with some interested attendees to discuss XATA's future: internationalization, conference model, ... We think XATA is important in the national context. It has succeeded in gathering and identifying a comunity that shares the same research interests and has promoted some colaborations. We want to keep "the wheel spinning"... This edition has its program distributed by first day's afternoon and next day's morning. This way we are facilitating travel arrangements and we will have one night to meet

    Visualization of heterogeneous data

    Abstract — Both the Resource Description Framework (RDF), used in the semantic web, and Maya Viz u-forms represent data as a graph of objects connected by labeled edges. Existing systems for flexible visualization of this kind of data require manual specification of the possible visualization roles for each data attribute. When the schema is large and unfamiliar, this requirement inhibits exploratory visualization by requiring a costly up-front data integration step. To eliminate this step, we propose an automatic technique for mapping data attributes to visualization attributes. We formulate this as a schema matching problem, finding appropriate paths in the data model for each required visualization attribute in a visualization template.     CELO: A System for Efficiently Building Informatics Solutions to Manage Biomedical Research Data

    Traditional data management methods are unable to sufficiently support growing trends in biomedical research such as collection of larger data sets, use of diverse data types, and sharing of data among multiple laboratories. Although many technologies are readily available to help laboratories build data management solutions, many laboratories are not taking advantage of them. This may be due to hardware and software costs, the need for an informaticist to build customized solutions, and long development times. Several systems already exist which attempt to address the informatics needs of biomedical researchers. A review of these systems has revealed the benefits and drawbacks of various system design approaches, and has helped us to identify a set of core requirements for a system that will successfully serve the biomedical research community. In consideration of these requirements, we developed the Customizable Electronic Laboratory Online (CELO) system to help laboratories efficiently build cost-effective informatics solutions. CELO automatically creates a generic database and web interface for laboratories that submit a simple web registration form. Researchers can then build their own customized data management systems using web-based features such as configurable user permissions, customizable user interfaces, support for multimedia files, and templates for defining research data representations. An evaluation of the CELO system has demonstrated its ability to efficiently create customized solutions for research laboratories with basic data management needs. The evaluation has also highlighted areas in which CELO can be improved and has elucidated potential research problems that may be of interest to the biomedical informatics field

    The recognition of entities and their relationships in document collections is an important step towards the discovery of latent knowledge as well as to support knowledge management applications. The challenge lies on how to extract and correlate entities, aiming to answer key knowledge management questions, such as; who works with whom, on which projects, with which customers and on what research areas. The present work proposes a knowledge mining approach supported by information retrieval and text mining tasks in which its core is based on the correlation of textual elements through the LRD (Latent Relation Discovery) method. Our experiments show that LRD outperform better than other correlation methods.     Personalizing Interactions with Information Systems

    Personalization constitutes the mechanisms and technologies necessary to customize information access to the end-user. It can be defined as the automatic adjustment of information content, structure, and presentation tailored to the individual. In this chapter, we study personalization from the viewpoint of personalizing interaction. The survey covers mechanisms for information-finding on the web, advanced information retrieval systems, dialog-based applications, and mobile access paradigms. Specific emphasis is placed on studying how users interact with an information system and how the system can encourage and foster interaction. This helps bring out the role of the personalization system as a facilitator which reconciles the user’s mental model with the underlying information system’s organization. Three tiers of personalization systems are presented, paying careful attention to interaction considerations. These tiers show how progressive levels of sophistication in interaction can be achieved.     Entity Summarisation with Limited Edge Budget on Undirected and Directed Knowledge Graphs

    The paper concerns a novel problem of summarising entities with limited presentation budget on entity-relationship knowledge graphs and propose an efficient algorithm for solving this problem. The algorithm has been implemented in two variants: undirected and directed, together with a visualisation tool. Experimental user evaluation of the algorithm was conducted on real large semantic knowledge graphs extracted from the web. The reported results of experimental user evaluation are promising and encourage to continue the work on improving the algorithm.
