Art and design learning journey: interactions between learners and materials
This thesis is an empirical explorative and new materialist qualitative research journey representing a secondary school art and design teacher’s awakening to the importance and vitality of art education to young learners with regards to their own intrinsic learning journey and their subsequent wider outlook on life. Secondary education and specifically art education is vulnerable and prone to political whims, lack of interest and shifts of policy since 1768 and the founding of the Royal Academy. The historical and political lineage of art and design education is outlined along with the lasting impact of language used within more recent statutory documentation. Little research currently exists that specifically looks at what is generated within the processes of making and doing that are intrinsic to creative activity and are lived out in every art and design classroom environment. Within this thesis I will explore the rich potential for haptic and tacit knowledge to be generated within the creative process, driven by heuristic experiences. I will also highlight the generation of powerful emotional relationships generated between human and non-human actants which occur as students engage with making and doing within the art classroom. Through working directly with different creative processes and materials, including research, poetry, design, and ceramics, two classes of year 9 students explored both collaboratively and individually the value of making and responding to both their own learning experience and that of working with others. The physicist and academic Karen Barad offers a novel platform of diffractive analysis with which to interpret the research project data in order to challenge the accepted positionality of merely working through a creative process in a procedural way. Diffractive analysis is also central in the analysis of the intra-actions between human and nonhuman actants opening up further discussions challenging established hierarchy and status quo presently found in secondary education. Building a Platform for Advancing Women\u27s Engagement in Sport
Women are active participants in sport, as administrative leaders, coaches, and elite athletes, and it is important to understand and continue to advance their engagement and experiences in that realm. Women have made gains in leadership but their actual progress towards such roles continues to be slow-paced (Burton & Leberman, 2017), indicating that additional action is still needed. Further, women’s experiences in sport roles are critical to their performance in, and for the organization, and to their personal job satisfaction (Kanter, 1977, 1993). Yet, they may face several challenges in their work, that may reduce their autonomy in relation to their work and impact their experiences and their sense of general wellbeing. An individual’s financial wellbeing is an important contributor to their overall wellbeing (Capic et al., 2018). It is important to recognize how elite athletes, and especially women athletes, navigate and make decisions to develop and sustain their finances in support of that wellbeing. This dissertation addresses these research areas and provides evidence from three studies on women’s engagement in sport. The conceptual model of the strategic business case developed in study 1 highlights evidence of the impact of women leaders on organizational practices, in pursuit of certain strategic priorities, for national sport organization (NSO) goal achievement. Study 2 provides insights to women’s empowerment in NSO sport leadership and organizational conditions that support that. Study 3 provides an understanding of the financial wellbeing of Canadian national team athletes and identifies particular money use and management behaviours that predict that wellbeing. The findings advance understanding of women’s engagement and experiences in sport and have implications for Canadian NSOs and multi-sport organizations that are considering the (further) engagement of women. Organizations can better support women, but action must be based on a strong platform of understanding what support is needed and how it may be enacted. The three studies in this dissertation provide that platform, to better support organizational efforts for the increased engagement of women in sport
ChatABL: Abductive Learning via Natural Language Interaction with ChatGPT
Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT have recently demonstrated
significant potential in mathematical abilities, providing valuable reasoning
paradigm consistent with human natural language. However, LLMs currently have
difficulty in bridging perception, language understanding and reasoning
capabilities due to incompatibility of the underlying information flow among
them, making it challenging to accomplish tasks autonomously. On the other
hand, abductive learning (ABL) frameworks for integrating the two abilities of
perception and reasoning has seen significant success in inverse decipherment
of incomplete facts, but it is limited by the lack of semantic understanding of
logical reasoning rules and the dependence on complicated domain knowledge
representation. This paper presents a novel method (ChatABL) for integrating
LLMs into the ABL framework, aiming at unifying the three abilities in a more
user-friendly and understandable manner. The proposed method uses the strengths
of LLMs' understanding and logical reasoning to correct the incomplete logical
facts for optimizing the performance of perceptual module, by summarizing and
reorganizing reasoning rules represented in natural language format. Similarly,
perceptual module provides necessary reasoning examples for LLMs in natural
language format. The variable-length handwritten equation deciphering task, an
abstract expression of the Mayan calendar decoding, is used as a testbed to
demonstrate that ChatABL has reasoning ability beyond most existing
state-of-the-art methods, which has been well supported by comparative studies.
To our best knowledge, the proposed ChatABL is the first attempt to explore a
new pattern for further approaching human-level cognitive ability via natural
language interaction with ChatGPT

How Doctoral Students in a Formal Leadership Program Conceptualize Followership: A Mixed-Methods Study
The purpose of this exploratory mixed-methods study was to determine how doctoral students in a formal leadership program conceptualize followership. The methods used to conduct this analysis included distributing a Qualtrics (released in August 2022) survey and conducting one-on-one interviews with a sample of degree-seeking doctoral students within a formal leadership program. The researcher collected quantitative and qualitative data addressing students’ followership style, leadership attitudes and beliefs, and perceptions of followership. These data were analyzed concurrently using a triangulation design. A total of 67 students completed the survey, and seven students were interviewed. The findings revealed that the participants employ an exemplary followership style, exercise systemic thinking, and hold a prototypic and antiprototypic view of followers. As followers, the participants described themselves as actively supporting the leader, organization, and team while taking the initiative to go above and beyond in problem-solving and executing their roles. Further, they emphasized the importance of developing rapport with their leader(s) and colleagues because they view leadership as a collective process that is relationship oriented. Moreover, they believe they add value to that process regardless of the role they hold. Although their perceptions of followership encompass a continuum of negative and positive follower attributes, they assume that most followers are proactive and interactive in their work with the leader(s) and members of the organization.
