Near-Instantaneously Adaptive HSDPA-Style OFDM Versus MC-CDMA Transceivers for WIFI, WIMAX, and Next-Generation Cellular Systems
Burts-by-burst (BbB) adaptive high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) style multicarrier systems are reviewed, identifying their most critical design aspects. These systems exhibit numerous attractive features, rendering them eminently eligible for employment in next-generation wireless systems. It is argued that BbB-adaptive or symbol-by-symbol adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) modems counteract the near instantaneous channel quality variations and hence attain an increased throughput or robustness in comparison to their fixed-mode counterparts. Although they act quite differently, various diversity techniques, such as Rake receivers and space-time block coding (STBC) are also capable of mitigating the channel quality variations in their effort to reduce the bit error ratio (BER), provided that the individual antenna elements experience independent fading. By contrast, in the presence of correlated fading imposed by shadowing or time-variant multiuser interference, the benefits of space-time coding erode and it is unrealistic to expect that a fixed-mode space-time coded system remains capable of maintaining a near-constant BER

Temporal and spatial combining for 5G mmWave small cells
This chapter proposes the combination of temporal processing through Rake combining based on direct sequence-spread spectrum (DS-SS), and multiple antenna beamforming or antenna spatial diversity as a possible physical layer access technique for fifth generation (5G) small cell base stations (SBS) operating in the millimetre wave (mmWave) frequencies. Unlike earlier works in the literature aimed at previous generation wireless, the use of the beamforming is presented as operating in the radio frequency (RF) domain, rather than the baseband domain, to minimise power expenditure as a more suitable method for 5G small cells. Some potential limitations associated with massive multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) for small cells are discussed relating to the likely limitation on available antennas and resultant beamwidth. Rather than relying, solely, on expensive and potentially power hungry massive MIMO (which in the case of a SBS for indoor use will be limited by a physically small form factor) the use of a limited number of antennas, complimented with Rake combining, or antenna diversity is given consideration for short distance indoor communications for both the SBS) and user equipment (UE). The proposal’s aim is twofold: to solve eroded path loss due to the effective antenna aperture reduction and to satisfy sensitivity to blockages and multipath dispersion in indoor, small coverage area base stations. Two candidate architectures are proposed. With higher data rates, more rigorous analysis of circuit power and its effect on energy efficiency (EE) is provided. A detailed investigation is provided into the likely design and signal processing requirements. Finally, the proposed architectures are compared to current fourth generation long term evolution (LTE) MIMO technologies for their anticipated power consumption and EE
Compressive Sensing-Based Grant-Free Massive Access for 6G Massive Communication
The advent of the sixth-generation (6G) of wireless communications has given
rise to the necessity to connect vast quantities of heterogeneous wireless
devices, which requires advanced system capabilities far beyond existing
network architectures. In particular, such massive communication has been
recognized as a prime driver that can empower the 6G vision of future
ubiquitous connectivity, supporting Internet of Human-Machine-Things for which
massive access is critical. This paper surveys the most recent advances toward
massive access in both academic and industry communities, focusing primarily on
the promising compressive sensing-based grant-free massive access paradigm. We
first specify the limitations of existing random access schemes and reveal that
the practical implementation of massive communication relies on a dramatically
different random access paradigm from the current ones mainly designed for
human-centric communications. Then, a compressive sensing-based grant-free
massive access roadmap is presented, where the evolutions from single-antenna
to large-scale antenna array-based base stations, from single-station to
cooperative massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, and from unsourced
to sourced random access scenarios are detailed. Finally, we discuss the key
challenges and open issues to shed light on the potential future research
directions of grant-free massive access.Comment: Accepted by IEEE IoT Journa
Modulation options for OFDM-based waveforms: classification, comparison, and future directions
This paper provides a comparative study on the performance of different modulation options
for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in terms of their spectral efficiency, reliability,
peak-to-average power ratio, power efficiency, out-of-band emission, and computational complexity. The
modulation candidates are classified into two main categories based on the signal plane dimension they
exploit. These categories are: 1) 2-D signal plane category including conventional OFDM with classical
fixed or adaptive QAM modulation and OFDM with differential modulation, where information is conveyed
in changes between two successive symbols in the same subcarrier or between two consecutive subcarriers in
the same OFDM symbol and 2) 3-D signal plane category encompassing: a) index-based OFDM modulation
schemes which include: i) spatial modulation OFDM, where information is sent by the indices of antennas
along with conventional modulated symbols and ii) OFDM with index modulation, where the subcarriers’
indices are used to send additional information; b) number-based OFDM modulation schemes which
include OFDM with subcarrier number modulation, in which number of subcarriers is exploited to convey
additional information; and c) shape-based OFDM modulation schemes which include OFDM with pulse
superposition modulation, where the shape of pulses is introduced as a third new dimension to convey
additional information. Based on the provided comparative study, the relationship and interaction between
these different modulation options and the requirements of future 5G networks are discussed and explained.
This paper is then concluded with some recommendations and future research directions. This work was supported in part by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), under Grant 215E316
Cyclic Prefix-Free MC-CDMA Arrayed MIMO Communication Systems
The objective of this thesis is to investigate MC-CDMA MIMO systems where
the antenna array geometry is taken into consideration. In most MC-CDMA
systems, cyclic pre xes, which reduce the spectral e¢ ciency, are used. In order
to improve the spectral efficiency, this research study is focused on cyclic pre x-
free MC-CDMA MIMO architectures.
Initially, space-time wireless channel models are developed by considering the
spatio-temporal mechanisms of the radio channel, such as multipath propaga-
tion. The spatio-temporal channel models are based on the concept of the array
manifold vector, which enables the parametric modelling of the channel.
The array manifold vector is extended to the multi-carrier space-time array
(MC-STAR) manifold matrix which enables the use of spatio-temporal signal
processing techniques. Based on the modelling, a new cyclic pre x-free MC-
CDMA arrayed MIMO communication system is proposed and its performance
is compared with a representative existing system. Furthermore, a MUSIC-type
algorithm is then developed for the estimation of the channel parameters of the
received signal.
This proposed cyclic pre x-free MC-CDMA arrayed MIMO system is then
extended to consider the effects of spatial diffusion in the wireless channel. Spatial
diffusion is an important channel impairment which is often ignored and the
failure to consider such effects leads to less than satisfactory performance. A
subspace-based approach is proposed for the estimation of the channel parameters
and spatial spread and reception of the desired signal.
Finally, the problem of joint optimization of the transmit and receive beam-
forming weights in the downlink of a cyclic pre x-free MC-CDMA arrayed MIMO
communication system is investigated. A subcarrier-cooperative approach is used
for the transmit beamforming so that there is greater flexibility in the allocation
of channel symbols. The resulting optimization problem, with a per-antenna
transmit power constraint, is solved by the Lagrange multiplier method and an
iterative algorithm is proposed
A General Framework for Analyzing, Characterizing, and Implementing Spectrally Modulated, Spectrally Encoded Signals
Fourth generation (4G) communications will support many capabilities while providing universal, high speed access. One potential enabler for these capabilities is software defined radio (SDR). When controlled by cognitive radio (CR) principles, the required waveform diversity is achieved via a synergistic union called CR-based SDR. Research is rapidly progressing in SDR hardware and software venues, but current CR-based SDR research lacks the theoretical foundation and analytic framework to permit efficient implementation. This limitation is addressed here by introducing a general framework for analyzing, characterizing, and implementing spectrally modulated, spectrally encoded (SMSE) signals within CR-based SDR architectures. Given orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a 4G candidate signal, OFDM-based signals are collectively classified as SMSE since modulation and encoding are spectrally applied. The proposed framework provides analytic commonality and unification of SMSE signals. Applicability is first shown for candidate 4G signals, and resultant analytic expressions agree with published results. Implementability is then demonstrated in multiple coexistence scenarios via modeling and simulation to reinforce practical utility
