Localization of Sound Sources in a Room with One Microphone
Estimation of the location of sound sources is usually done using microphone
arrays. Such settings provide an environment where we know the difference
between the received signals among different microphones in the terms of phase
or attenuation, which enables localization of the sound sources. In our
solution we exploit the properties of the room transfer function in order to
localize a sound source inside a room with only one microphone. The shape of
the room and the position of the microphone are assumed to be known. The design
guidelines and limitations of the sensing matrix are given. Implementation is
based on the sparsity in the terms of voxels in a room that are occupied by a
source. What is especially interesting about our solution is that we provide
localization of the sound sources not only in the horizontal plane, but in the
terms of the 3D coordinates inside the room
A fast GPU Monte Carlo Radiative Heat Transfer Implementation for Coupling with Direct Numerical Simulation
We implemented a fast Reciprocal Monte Carlo algorithm, to accurately solve
radiative heat transfer in turbulent flows of non-grey participating media that
can be coupled to fully resolved turbulent flows, namely to Direct Numerical
Simulation (DNS). The spectrally varying absorption coefficient is treated in a
narrow-band fashion with a correlated-k distribution. The implementation is
verified with analytical solutions and validated with results from literature
and line-by-line Monte Carlo computations. The method is implemented on GPU
with a thorough attention to memory transfer and computational efficiency. The
bottlenecks that dominate the computational expenses are addressed and several
techniques are proposed to optimize the GPU execution. By implementing the
proposed algorithmic accelerations, a speed-up of up to 3 orders of magnitude
can be achieved, while maintaining the same accuracy
Commercial-off-the-shelf simulation package interoperability: Issues and futures
Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Simulation Packages (CSPs) are widely used in industry to simulate discrete-event models. Interoperability of CSPs requires the use of distributed simulation techniques. Literature presents us with many examples of achieving CSP interoperability using bespoke solutions. However, for the wider adoption of CSP-based distributed simulation it is essential that, first and foremost, a standard for CSP interoperability be created, and secondly, these standards are adhered to by the CSP vendors. This advanced tutorial is on an emerging standard relating to CSP interoperability. It gives an overview of this standard and presents case studies that implement some of the proposed standards. Furthermore, interoperability is discussed in relation to large and complex models developed using CSPs that require large amount of computing resources.
