Analysis of WiMAX Physical Layer Using Spatial Multiplexing
Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) has emerged as a promising solution for
providing last mile internet access technology to provide high speed internet
access to the users in the residential as well as in the small and medium sized
enterprise sectors. IEEE 802.16e is one of the most promising and attractive
candidate among the emerging technologies for broadband wireless access. The
emergence of WiMAX protocol has attracted various interests from almost all the
fields of wireless communications. MIMO systems which are created according to
the IEEE 802.16-2005 standard (WiMAX) under different fading channels can be
implemented to get the benefits of both the MIMO and WiMAX technologies. In
this paper analysis of higher level of modulations (i.e. M-PSK and M-QAM for
different values of M) with different code rates and on WiMAX-MIMO system is
presented for Rayleigh channel by focusing on spatial multiplexing MIMO
technique. Signal-to Noise Ratio (SNR) vs Bit Error Rate (BER) analysis has
been done.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 1 table; International Journal of Wireless &

Performance evaluation of fixed WiMax physical layer under high fading channels
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.A radio channel characteristic modelling is essential in every network planning. This project deals with the performance of WiMax networks in an outdoor environment while using fading channel models. The radio channels characteristics are analyzed by simulations have been done using Matlab programming. Stanford University Interim(SUI) Channels set was proposed to simulate the fixed broadband wireless access channel environments where IEEE 802.16d is to be deployed. It has six channel models that are grouped into three categories according to three typical different outdoor Terrains, in order to give a comprehensive study of fading channels on the overall performance of the system, WiMax system has been tested under SUI channels that modified into account for 30o directional antennas, with 90% cell coverage and with 99.9% reliability in its geographical covered area. Furthermore, in order to combat the fading which occurs in urban areas and improve the capacity and the throughput of the system, multiples antennas at both ends of communication link are used, the transmission gain obtained when using multiple antennas instead of only a single antenna. Space-time coding and maximum ratio combining for more than one transmit and receive antenna is implemented to allow performance investigations in various MIMO scenarios. It has been concluded that uses multiple antennas at the receiver offers a significant improvement of 3 dB of gain in the channel SNR. This thesis also contain implementation of all compulsory features of the WiMax OFDM physical layer specified in IEEE 802.16-2004 using Matlab coding. In order to combat the temporal variations in quality on a multipath fading channel, an adaptive modulation technique is used. This technique employs multiple modulation schemes to instantaneously adapt to the variations in the channel SNR, thus maximizing the system throughput and improving BER performance. WiMax transceiver has been tested with and without encoding and studied the effect of encoding on multipath channel. Testing the system with flexible channel bandwidth has been part of this thesis. Finally it has been explained in this thesis the affect of increasing the size of cyclic prefix on overall performance of WiMax system
Physical Layer Simulation Study for the Co-existence of WLAN Standards
Interference is a prime factor that limits the performance of devices within the 2.4 GHz ISM Band. Due to the ISM Band being unlicensed and free to all users, there is an abundance of devices within this frequency range. The three most prominent of such devices used for data communication consist of Bluetooth, Wifi, and Zigbee. In order to understand whether these three protocols can co-exist with each other, a physical layer system model will be developed for each protocol. These systems models will be combined and their interaction with each other examined to determine the effects of the interference under different channel conditions. The channel models will consist of general AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels, along with a site-specific case involving both Ricean and Rayleigh fading
Simulation and Emulation Approach for the Performance Evaluation of Adaptive Modulation and Coding Scheme in Mobile WiMAX Network
WiMAX is the IEEE 802.16e standard-based wireless technology, provides Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) for Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN). Being the wireless channels are precious and limited, adapting the appropriate modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for the state of the radio channel leads to an optimal average data rate. The standard supports adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) on the basis of signal to interference noise ratio (SINR) condition of the radio link. This paper made an attempt to study the performance of AMC scheme in Mobile WiMAX network using simulation and emulation methods. Different MCS are adopted by mobile subscriber station (MSS) on the basis of the detected instantaneous SINR. Simulation results demonstrate the impact of modulation and coding scheme on the performance of the system and emulation results defend the simulation results
WiMAX HAPS-based downlink performance employing geometrical and statistical propagation channel characteristics
The evolution to a well-expected technology in wireless-communications maturity is in progress. Complementary applications are being suggested for such purposes, which might be possibly effective from the already ongoing research on high-altitude-platform systems. Herein, we introduce a HAPS-based system for delivering broadband communications intended to be operational at L band. A physical-statistical channel model for the HAPSto-fixed-terrestrial terminal provision is derived from urban geometrical radio-coverage considerations with a simple diffraction theory. The stratospheric broadband channel model is fulfi lled with the two channel-state situations related to the direct and specular rays, plus multipath. The fi rst state consists of predicting the performance for which the line-of-sight path can exist between HAPS and the still terminal at street level. The second channel state refers to modeling the statistical fading characteristics for the shadowing condition. The system implementation is approximated and analyzed by performing intensive simulation-aided modeling. The proposed hypotheses use empirical data derived from land-mobile-satellite communication-system records. Because the systems require robust, reliable, and future standardization results, IEEE 802.16™-2004 PHYlayer technical specifi cations are used to accomplish the WiMAX HAPS-based downlink performance evaluation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
A new hybrid model of dengue incidence rate using negative binomial generalised additive model and fuzzy c-means model: a case study in Selangor
Dengue is one of the top reason for illness and mortality in the world with beyond oneÂthird of the world's population living in the risk areas of dengue infection. In this study, there are five stages to achieve the research objectives. Firstly, the verification of predetem1ined variables. Secondly, the identification of new datasets after clustered by district and Fuzzy C-Means Model (FCM). Thirdly, the development of models using the existing dataset and the new datasets which clustered by the two different clustering categories. Then, to assess the models developed by using three measurement methods which are deviance (D), Akaike Jnfonnation Criteria (AIC) and Bayesian Infonnation Criteria (BIC} Lastly, the validation of model developed by comparing the value of D, AIC and BIC between the existing model and the new models developed which used the new datasets. There are two different clustering techniques applied which are clustering the data by district and by FCM. This study proposed a new modelling hybrid framework by using two statistical models which are FCM and negative binomial Generalised Additive Model (GAM). This study successfully presents the significant difference in the climatic and non-climatic factors that influenced dengue incidence rate (DIR) in Selangor, Malaysia. Results show that the climatic factors such as rainfall with current month up to 3 months and number of rainy days with current month up to lag 3 months are significant to DIR. Besides, the interaction between rainfall and number of rainy days also shows strong positive relationship to DIR. Meanwhile, non-climatic vaiiables such as population density, number of locality and lag DIR from I month until 3 months also show significant relationship towards DIR For both clustering techniques, there are two clusters fonned and there are four new models developed in this study. After comparing the values of D, AIC ai1d BIC between the existing model and the new models, this study concluded that four new models recorded lower values compared to the existing model. Therefore, the four new models are selected to present the dengue incidence in Selangor
