The dynamics of computerization in a social science research team : a case study of infrastructure, strategies, and skills
This paper examines the dynamics of Computerization in a PC-oriented research group through a case study. The time and skill in integrating computing into the labor processes of research are often significant "hidden costs" of computerization. Computing infrastructure plays a key role in reducing these costs may be enhanced by careful organization. We illustrate computerization strategies that we have found to be productive and unproductive. Appropriate computerization strategies depend as much on the structuring of resources and interests in the larger social setting, as on a technical characterization of tasks

Integrating Open Source GIS Software in Undergraduate Curriculum, Research, and Outreach - Recent Experiences at Salisbury University
The Department of Geography and Geosciences at Salisbury University has a long tradition of teaching geographic information science. Until recently, most of the courses and research activities focused on commercial software offerings. However, the Department recently integrated Free and Open Source Software for GIS (FOSSG) into its curriculum, research, and outreach. Curriculum changes included introducing students to FOSSG in traditional GIS courses using QGIS, and creating two entirely new courses in Enterprise GIS and GIS Programming using PostGIS, GDAL, and Spatial Lite. Through a competitive National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates grant (REU), students participated in cutting edge research projects in parallel processing with Hadoop and spatial Hadoop for cluster computing, and CUDA for GPGPU calculation on embarrassingly parallel processes for raster data. Finally, undergraduate interns working in the Department\u27s Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative (ESRGC) developed geodashboards using node.js, PostGIS, and Leaflet, while a special topics course developed a GIS based iphone and Android application used by 4,000 participants in the annual Sea Gull Century bike ride using GeoJSON, Leaflet, and javascript. In addition to highlighting the successes of these activities, this paper will discuss the process we used to make the necessary changes in our curriculum, secure the necessary funding for external projects, and the training approach we used to get our computer science students proficient in programming with FOSSG tools
Leading Undergraduate Students to Big Data Generation
People are facing a flood of data today. Data are being collected at
unprecedented scale in many areas, such as networking, image processing,
virtualization, scientific computation, and algorithms. The huge data nowadays
are called Big Data. Big data is an all encompassing term for any collection of
data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process them using
traditional data processing applications. In this article, the authors present
a unique way which uses network simulator and tools of image processing to
train students abilities to learn, analyze, manipulate, and apply Big Data.
Thus they develop students handson abilities on Big Data and their critical
thinking abilities. The authors used novel image based rendering algorithm with
user intervention to generate realistic 3D virtual world. The learning outcomes
are significant
A computerized test of speed of language comprehension unconfounded by literacy
A computerised version of the Silly Sentences task developed for use with children
(Baddeley et al, 1995) is found to be equivalent to the pencil-and-paper version from the
SCOLP Test (Baddeley et al, 1992) with UK undergraduates, and is usable by a sample of
young UK children. Because the sentences are presented aloud instead of being written, the
computerised test is not affected by literacy skills. Translated into Kiswahili, the task was
used in Tanzanian schools, despite the absence of an electricity supply and a very different
cultural background. The decision latencies had a test-retest reliability of 0.69 over 5
months, and were independent of age and baseline decision speed. The task appears
appropriate for longitudinal studies, including those in developing countries. Given its
simplicity and the correlations with the original SCOLP version of the task, it may also
be useful in studies on literate adults

Представлен обзор ряда проблем, с которыми сталкиваются разработчики курсов медиаобразования: отсутствие надежных критериев измерения уровня медиакомпетентности, слабый уровень подготовки учителей, обеспечивающих медиаобразование, недостаточное внимание к данному компоненту общей и профессиональной подготовки в стандартах высшего образования ряда стран, включая Российскую Федерацию. Особое внимание уделяется вопросу сопряжения курсов и дисциплин, участвующих в формировании медиакомпетентности в университетах и вузах
Testing SDRT's Right Frontier
The Right Frontier Constraint (RFC), as a constraint on the attachment of new
constituents to an existing discourse structure, has important implications for
the interpretation of anaphoric elements in discourse and for Machine Learning
(ML) approaches to learning discourse structures. In this paper we provide
strong empirical support for SDRT's version of RFC. The analysis of about 100
doubly annotated documents by five different naive annotators shows that SDRT's
RFC is respected about 95% of the time. The qualitative analysis of presumed
violations that we have performed shows that they are either click-errors or
structural misconceptions
Peachy Parallel Assignments (EduHPC 2018)
Peachy Parallel Assignments are a resource for instructors teaching parallel and distributed programming. These are high-quality assignments, previously tested in class, that are readily adoptable. This collection of assignments includes implementing a subset of OpenMP using pthreads, creating an animated fractal, image processing using histogram equalization, simulating a storm of high-energy particles, and solving the wave equation in a variety of settings.
