A taxonomy framework for unsupervised outlier detection techniques for multi-type data sets
The term "outlier" can generally be defined as an observation that is significantly different from
the other values in a data set. The outliers may be instances of error or indicate events. The
task of outlier detection aims at identifying such outliers in order to improve the analysis of
data and further discover interesting and useful knowledge about unusual events within numerous
applications domains. In this paper, we report on contemporary unsupervised outlier detection
techniques for multiple types of data sets and provide a comprehensive taxonomy framework and
two decision trees to select the most suitable technique based on data set. Furthermore, we
highlight the advantages, disadvantages and performance issues of each class of outlier detection
techniques under this taxonomy framework
A two-dimensional data-driven model for traffic flow on highways
Based on experimental traffic data obtained from German and US highways, we
propose a novel two-dimensional first-order macroscopic traffic flow model. The
goal is to reproduce a detailed description of traffic dynamics for the real
road geometry. In our approach both the dynamic along the road and across the
lanes is continuous. The closure relations, being necessary to complete the
hydrodynamic equation, are obtained by regression on fundamental diagram data.
Comparison with prediction of one-dimensional models shows the improvement in
performance of the novel model.Comment: 27 page
Complexity plots
In this paper, we present a novel visualization technique for assisting in observation and analysis of algorithmic\ud
complexity. In comparison with conventional line graphs, this new technique is not sensitive to the units of\ud
measurement, allowing multivariate data series of different physical qualities (e.g., time, space and energy) to be juxtaposed together conveniently and consistently. It supports multivariate visualization as well as uncertainty visualization. It enables users to focus on algorithm categorization by complexity classes, while reducing visual impact caused by constants and algorithmic components that are insignificant to complexity analysis. It provides an effective means for observing the algorithmic complexity of programs with a mixture of algorithms and blackbox software through visualization. Through two case studies, we demonstrate the effectiveness of complexity plots in complexity analysis in research, education and application
The ear as a biometric
It is more than 10 years since the first tentative experiments in ear biometrics were conducted and it has now reached the “adolescence” of its development towards a mature biometric. Here we present a timely retrospective of the ensuing research since those early days. Whilst its detailed structure may not be as complex as the iris, we show that the ear has unique security advantages over other biometrics. It is most unusual, even unique, in that it supports not only visual and forensic recognition, but also acoustic recognition at the same time. This, together with its deep three-dimensional structure and its robust resistance to change with age will make it very difficult to counterfeit thus ensuring that the ear will occupy a special place in situations requiring a high degree of protection
