A Taxonomy of Workflow Management Systems for Grid Computing
With the advent of Grid and application technologies, scientists and
engineers are building more and more complex applications to manage and process
large data sets, and execute scientific experiments on distributed resources.
Such application scenarios require means for composing and executing complex
workflows. Therefore, many efforts have been made towards the development of
workflow management systems for Grid computing. In this paper, we propose a
taxonomy that characterizes and classifies various approaches for building and
executing workflows on Grids. We also survey several representative Grid
workflow systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the
comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the design
and engineering similarities and differences of state-of-the-art in Grid
workflow systems, but also identifies the areas that need further research.Comment: 29 pages, 15 figure
Grid-job scheduling with reservations and preemption
Computational grids make it possible to exploit grid resources across multiple clusters when grid jobs are deconstructed into tasks and allocated across clusters. Grid-job tasks are often scheduled in the form of workflows which require synchronization, and advance reservation makes it easy to guarantee predictable resource provisioning for these jobs. However, advance reservation for grid jobs creates roadblocks and fragmentation which adversely affects the system utilization and response times for local jobs. We provide a solution which incorporates relaxed reservations and uses a modified version of the standard grid-scheduling algorithm, HEFT, to obtain flexibility in placing reservations for workflow grid jobs. Furthermore, we deploy the relaxed reservation with modified HEFT as an extension of the preemption based job scheduling framework, SCOJO-PECT job scheduler. In SCOJO-PECT, relaxed reservations serve the additional purpose of permitting scheduler optimizations which shift the overall schedule forward. Furthermore, a propagation heuristics algorithm is used to alleviate the workflow job makespan extension caused by the slack of relaxed reservation. Our solution aims at decreasing the fragmentation caused by grid jobs, so that local jobs and system utilization are not compromised, and at the same time grid jobs also have reasonable response times
Scheduling in Grid Computing Environment
Scheduling in Grid computing has been active area of research since its
beginning. However, beginners find very difficult to understand related
concepts due to a large learning curve of Grid computing. Thus, there is a need
of concise understanding of scheduling in Grid computing area. This paper
strives to present concise understanding of scheduling and related
understanding of Grid computing system. The paper describes overall picture of
Grid computing and discusses important sub-systems that enable Grid computing
possible. Moreover, the paper also discusses concepts of resource scheduling
and application scheduling and also presents classification of scheduling
algorithms. Furthermore, the paper also presents methodology used for
evaluating scheduling algorithms including both real system and simulation
based approaches. The presented work on scheduling in Grid containing concise
understandings of scheduling system, scheduling algorithm, and scheduling
methodology would be very useful to users and researchersComment: Fourth International Conference on Advanced Computing & Communication

Stochastic Workflow Scheduling with QoS Guarantees in Grid Computing Environments
Grid computing infrastructures embody a cost-effective computing paradigm that virtualises heterogenous system resources to meet the dynamic needs of critical business and scientific applications. These applications range from batch processes and long-running tasks to more real-time and even transactional applications. Grid schedulers aim to make efficient use of Grid resources in a cost-effective way, while satisfying the Quality-of-Service requirements of the applications. Scheduling in such a large-scale, dynamic and distributed environment is a complex undertaking. In this paper, we propose an approach to Grid scheduling which abstracts over the details of individual applications and aims to provide a globally optimal schedule, while having the ability to dynamically adjust to varying workloa
Experimental Study of Remote Job Submission and Execution on LRM through Grid Computing Mechanisms
Remote job submission and execution is fundamental requirement of distributed
computing done using Cluster computing. However, Cluster computing limits usage
within a single organization. Grid computing environment can allow use of
resources for remote job execution that are available in other organizations.
This paper discusses concepts of batch-job execution using LRM and using Grid.
The paper discusses two ways of preparing test Grid computing environment that
we use for experimental testing of concepts. This paper presents experimental
testing of remote job submission and execution mechanisms through LRM specific
way and Grid computing ways. Moreover, the paper also discusses various
problems faced while working with Grid computing environment and discusses
their trouble-shootings. The understanding and experimental testing presented
in this paper would become very useful to researchers who are new to the field
of job management in Grid.Comment: Fourth International Conference on Advanced Computing & Communication

Introducing risk management into the grid
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are explicit statements about all expectations and obligations in the business partnership between customers and providers. They have been introduced in Grid computing to overcome the best effort approach, making the Grid more interesting for commercial applications. However, decisions on negotiation and system management still rely on static approaches, not reflecting the risk linked with decisions. The EC-funded project "AssessGrid" aims at introducing risk assessment and management as a novel decision paradigm into Grid computing. This paper gives a general motivation for risk management and presents the envisaged architecture of a "risk-aware" Grid middleware and Grid fabric, highlighting its functionality by means of three showcase scenarios
