    Differential spectrum modeling and sensitivity for keV sterile neutrino search at KATRIN

    Starting in 2026, the KATRIN experiment will conduct a high-statistics measurement of the differential tritium β\beta-spectrum to energies deep below the kinematic endpoint. This enables the search for keV sterile neutrinos with masses less than the kinematic endpoint energy m4≤E0=18.6 keVm_\mathrm{4} \leq E_0 = 18.6\,\mathrm{keV}, aiming for a statistical sensitivity of ∣Ue4∣2=sin⁡2θ∼10−6|U_\mathrm{e4}|^2=\sin^2\theta\sim 10^{-6} for the mixing amplitude. The differential spectrum is obtained by decreasing the retarding potential of KATRIN\u27s main spectrometer, and by determining the β\beta-electron energies by their energy deposition in the new TRISTAN SDD array. In this mode of operation, the existing integral model of the tritium spectrum is insufficient, and a novel differential model is developed in this work. The new model (TRModel) convolves the differential tritium spectrum using responese matrices to predict the energy spectrum of registered events after data acquisition. Each response matrix encodes the spectral spectral distrortion from individual experimental effects, which depend on adjustable systematic parameters. This approach allows to efficiently assess the sensitivity impact of each systematics individually or in combination with others. The response matrices are obtained from monte carlo simulations, numerical convolution, and analytical computation. In this work, the sensitivity impact of 20 systematic parameters is assessed for the TRISTAN Phase-1 measurement for which nine TRISTAN SDD modules are integrated into the KATRIN beamline. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the sensitivity impact is significantly mitigated with several beamline field adjustments and minimal hardware modifications

    Data-assisted modeling of complex chemical and biological systems

    Complex systems are abundant in chemistry and biology; they can be multiscale, possibly high-dimensional or stochastic, with nonlinear dynamics and interacting components. It is often nontrivial (and sometimes impossible), to determine and study the macroscopic quantities of interest and the equations they obey. One can only (judiciously or randomly) probe the system, gather observations and study trends. In this thesis, Machine Learning is used as a complement to traditional modeling and numerical methods to enable data-assisted (or data-driven) dynamical systems. As case studies, three complex systems are sourced from diverse fields: The first one is a high-dimensional computational neuroscience model of the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus of the human brain, where bifurcation analysis is performed by simply probing the system. Then, manifold learning is employed to discover a latent space of neuronal heterogeneity. Second, Machine Learning surrogate models are used to optimize dynamically operated catalytic reactors. An algorithmic pipeline is presented through which it is possible to program catalysts with active learning. Third, Machine Learning is employed to extract laws of Partial Differential Equations describing bacterial Chemotaxis. It is demonstrated how Machine Learning manages to capture the rules of bacterial motility in the macroscopic level, starting from diverse data sources (including real-world experimental data). More importantly, a framework is constructed though which already existing, partial knowledge of the system can be exploited. These applications showcase how Machine Learning can be used synergistically with traditional simulations in different scenarios: (i) Equations are available but the overall system is so high-dimensional that efficiency and explainability suffer, (ii) Equations are available but lead to highly nonlinear black-box responses, (iii) Only data are available (of varying source and quality) and equations need to be discovered. For such data-assisted dynamical systems, we can perform fundamental tasks, such as integration, steady-state location, continuation and optimization. This work aims to unify traditional scientific computing and Machine Learning, in an efficient, data-economical, generalizable way, where both the physical system and the algorithm matter

    Distribution-Free Location-Scale Regression

    We introduce a generalized additive model for location, scale, and shape (GAMLSS) next of kin aiming at distribution-free and parsimonious regression modelling for arbitrary outcomes. We replace the strict parametric distribution formulating such a model by a transformation function, which in turn is estimated from data. Doing so not only makes the model distribution-free but also allows to limit the number of linear or smooth model terms to a pair of location-scale predictor functions. We derive the likelihood for continuous, discrete, and randomly censored observations, along with corresponding score functions. A plethora of existing algorithms is leveraged for model estimation, including constrained maximum-likelihood, the original GAMLSS algorithm, and transformation trees. Parameter interpretability in the resulting models is closely connected to model selection. We propose the application of a novel best subset selection procedure to achieve especially simple ways of interpretation. All techniques are motivated and illustrated by a collection of applications from different domains, including crossing and partial proportional hazards, complex count regression, non-linear ordinal regression, and growth curves. All analyses are reproducible with the help of the "tram" add-on package to the R system for statistical computing and graphics

    Development of a SQUID magnetometry system for cryogenic neutron electric dipole moment experiment

    A measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) could hold the key to understanding why the visible universe is the way it is: why matter should predominate over antimatter. As a charge-parity violating (CPV) quantity, an nEDM could provide an insight into new mechanisms that address this baryon asymmetry. The motivation for an improved sensitivity to an nEDM is to find it to be non-zero at a level consistent with certain beyond the Standard Model theories that predict new sources of CPV, or to establish a new limit that constrains them. CryoEDM is an experiment that sought to better the current limit of ∣dn∣<2.9×10−26 e |d_n| < 2.9 \times 10^{-26}\,e\,cm by an order of magnitude. It is designed to measure the nEDM via the Ramsey Method of Separated Oscillatory Fields, in which it is critical that the magnetic field remains stable throughout. A way of accurately tracking the magnetic fields, moreover at a temperature ∼0.5 \sim 0.5\,K, is crucial for CryoEDM, and for future cryogenic projects. This thesis presents work focussing on the development of a 12-SQUID magnetometry system for CryoEDM, that enables the magnetic field to be monitored to a precision of 0.1 0.1\,pT. A major component of its infrastructure is the superconducting capillary shields, which screen the input lines of the SQUIDs from the pick up of spurious magnetic fields that will perturb a SQUID's measurement. These are shown to have a transverse shielding factor of >1×107> 1 \times 10^{7}, which is a few orders of magnitude greater than the calculated requirement. Efforts to characterise the shielding of the SQUID chips themselves are also discussed. The use of Cryoperm for shields reveals a tension between improved SQUID noise and worse neutron statistics. Investigations show that without it, SQUIDs have an elevated noise when cooled in a substantial magnetic field; with it, magnetostatic simulations suggest that it is detrimental to the polarisation of neutrons in transport. The findings suggest that with proper consideration, it is possible to reach a compromise between the two behaviours. Computational work to develop a simulation of SQUID data is detailed, which is based on the Laplace equation for the magnetic scalar potential. These data are ultimately used in the development of a linear regression technique to determine the volume-averaged magnetic field in the neutron cells. This proves highly effective in determining the fields within the 0.1 0.1\,pT requirement under certain conditions

    Automated identification and behaviour classification for modelling social dynamics in group-housed mice

    Mice are often used in biology as exploratory models of human conditions, due to their similar genetics and physiology. Unfortunately, research on behaviour has traditionally been limited to studying individuals in isolated environments and over short periods of time. This can miss critical time-effects, and, since mice are social creatures, bias results. This work addresses this gap in research by developing tools to analyse the individual behaviour of group-housed mice in the home-cage over several days and with minimal disruption. Using data provided by the Mary Lyon Centre at MRC Harwell we designed an end-to-end system that (a) tracks and identifies mice in a cage, (b) infers their behaviour, and subsequently (c) models the group dynamics as functions of individual activities. In support of the above, we also curated and made available a large dataset of mouse localisation and behaviour classifications (IMADGE), as well as two smaller annotated datasets for training/evaluating the identification (TIDe) and behaviour inference (ABODe) systems. This research constitutes the first of its kind in terms of the scale and challenges addressed. The data source (side-view single-channel video with clutter and no identification markers for mice) presents challenging conditions for analysis, but has the potential to give richer information while using industry standard housing. A Tracking and Identification module was developed to automatically detect, track and identify the (visually similar) mice in the cluttered home-cage using only single-channel IR video and coarse position from RFID readings. Existing detectors and trackers were combined with a novel Integer Linear Programming formulation to assign anonymous tracks to mouse identities. This utilised a probabilistic weight model of affinity between detections and RFID pickups. The next task necessitated the implementation of the Activity Labelling module that classifies the behaviour of each mouse, handling occlusion to avoid giving unreliable classifications when the mice cannot be observed. Two key aspects of this were (a) careful feature-selection, and (b) judicious balancing of the errors of the system in line with the repercussions for our setup. Given these sequences of individual behaviours, we analysed the interaction dynamics between mice in the same cage by collapsing the group behaviour into a sequence of interpretable latent regimes using both static and temporal (Markov) models. Using a permutation matrix, we were able to automatically assign mice to roles in the HMM, fit a global model to a group of cages and analyse abnormalities in data from a different demographic

    Proceedings of SIRM 2023 - The 15th European Conference on Rotordynamics

    It was our great honor and pleasure to host the SIRM Conference after 2003 and 2011 for the third time in Darmstadt. Rotordynamics covers a huge variety of different applications and challenges which are all in the scope of this conference. The conference was opened with a keynote lecture given by Rainer Nordmann, one of the three founders of SIRM “Schwingungen in rotierenden Maschinen”. In total 53 papers passed our strict review process and were presented. This impressively shows that rotordynamics is relevant as ever. These contributions cover a very wide spectrum of session topics: fluid bearings and seals; air foil bearings; magnetic bearings; rotor blade interaction; rotor fluid interactions; unbalance and balancing; vibrations in turbomachines; vibration control; instability; electrical machines; monitoring, identification and diagnosis; advanced numerical tools and nonlinearities as well as general rotordynamics. The international character of the conference has been significantly enhanced by the Scientific Board since the 14th SIRM resulting on one hand in an expanded Scientific Committee which meanwhile consists of 31 members from 13 different European countries and on the other hand in the new name “European Conference on Rotordynamics”. This new international profile has also been emphasized by participants of the 15th SIRM coming from 17 different countries out of three continents. We experienced a vital discussion and dialogue between industry and academia at the conference where roughly one third of the papers were presented by industry and two thirds by academia being an excellent basis to follow a bidirectional transfer what we call xchange at Technical University of Darmstadt. At this point we also want to give our special thanks to the eleven industry sponsors for their great support of the conference.     On the Utility of Representation Learning Algorithms for Myoelectric Interfacing

    Electrical activity produced by muscles during voluntary movement is a reflection of the firing patterns of relevant motor neurons and, by extension, the latent motor intent driving the movement. Once transduced via electromyography (EMG) and converted into digital form, this activity can be processed to provide an estimate of the original motor intent and is as such a feasible basis for non-invasive efferent neural interfacing. EMG-based motor intent decoding has so far received the most attention in the field of upper-limb prosthetics, where alternative means of interfacing are scarce and the utility of better control apparent. Whereas myoelectric prostheses have been available since the 1960s, available EMG control interfaces still lag behind the mechanical capabilities of the artificial limbs they are intended to steer—a gap at least partially due to limitations in current methods for translating EMG into appropriate motion commands. As the relationship between EMG signals and concurrent effector kinematics is highly non-linear and apparently stochastic, finding ways to accurately extract and combine relevant information from across electrode sites is still an active area of inquiry.This dissertation comprises an introduction and eight papers that explore issues afflicting the status quo of myoelectric decoding and possible solutions, all related through their use of learning algorithms and deep Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. Paper I presents a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for multi-label movement decoding of high-density surface EMG (HD-sEMG) signals. Inspired by the successful use of CNNs in Paper I and the work of others, Paper II presents a method for automatic design of CNN architectures for use in myocontrol. Paper III introduces an ANN architecture with an appertaining training framework from which simultaneous and proportional control emerges. Paper Iv introduce a dataset of HD-sEMG signals for use with learning algorithms. Paper v applies a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) model to decode finger forces from intramuscular EMG. Paper vI introduces a Transformer model for myoelectric interfacing that do not need additional training data to function with previously unseen users. Paper vII compares the performance of a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network to that of classical pattern recognition algorithms. Lastly, paper vIII describes a framework for synthesizing EMG from multi-articulate gestures intended to reduce training burden

    A Preliminary Study of the Effect of the Chirped Rotating Wall on a Positron Cloud

    The density of the positron cloud is a crucial parameter in many applications ofaccumulated positrons. Previous work has shown that adjusting the frequency ofthe rotating wall potential following positron accumulation can be used to controlthe density of positron clouds. In this work, positron clouds were studied afterbeing compressed using a linear rotating wall frequency sweep under a selection ofrotating wall drive amplitudes and cooling gas pressures following an initial staticfrequency compression. This was performed for SF6, CF4, and briefly for CO. Theeffect of changing the cooling gas appears congruent to that shown by the staticfrequency case. The results are in qualitative agreement with previous work byDeller et al., and compare briefly but favourably to a simplistic numerical model
