A new multistage lattice vector quantization with adaptive subband thresholding for image compression
Lattice vector quantization (LVQ) reduces coding complexity and computation due to its regular structure. A new multistage LVQ (MLVQ) using an adaptive subband thresholding technique is presented and applied to image compression. The technique concentrates on reducing the quantization error of the quantized vectors by "blowing out" the residual quantization errors with an LVQ scale factor. The significant coefficients of each subband are identified using an optimum adaptive thresholding scheme for each subband. A variable length coding procedure using Golomb codes is used to compress the codebook index which produces a very efficient and fast technique for entropy coding. Experimental results using the MLVQ are shown to be significantly better than JPEG 2000 and the recent VQ techniques for various test images
Distilled Sensing: Adaptive Sampling for Sparse Detection and Estimation
Adaptive sampling results in dramatic improvements in the recovery of sparse
signals in white Gaussian noise. A sequential adaptive sampling-and-refinement
procedure called Distilled Sensing (DS) is proposed and analyzed. DS is a form
of multi-stage experimental design and testing. Because of the adaptive nature
of the data collection, DS can detect and localize far weaker signals than
possible from non-adaptive measurements. In particular, reliable detection and
localization (support estimation) using non-adaptive samples is possible only
if the signal amplitudes grow logarithmically with the problem dimension. Here
it is shown that using adaptive sampling, reliable detection is possible
provided the amplitude exceeds a constant, and localization is possible when
the amplitude exceeds any arbitrarily slowly growing function of the dimension.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures. Revision includes minor clarifications, along

Segmentation-assisted detection of dirt impairments in archived film sequences
A novel segmentation-assisted method for film dirt detection is proposed. We exploit the fact that film dirt manifests in the spatial domain as a cluster of connected pixels whose intensity differs substantially from that of its neighborhood and we employ a segmentation-based approach to identify this type of structure. A key feature of our approach is the computation of a measure of confidence attached to detected dirt regions which can be utilized for performance fine tuning. Another important feature of our algorithm is the avoidance of the computational complexity associated with motion estimation. Our experimental framework benefits from the availability of manually derived as well as objective ground truth data obtained using infrared scanning. Our results demonstrate that the proposed method compares favorably with standard spatial, temporal and multistage median filtering approaches and provides efficient and robust detection for a wide variety of test material
