    Content-Based Book Recommending Using Learning for Text Categorization

    Recommender systems improve access to relevant products and information by making personalized suggestions based on previous examples of a user's likes and dislikes. Most existing recommender systems use social filtering methods that base recommendations on other users' preferences. By contrast, content-based methods use information about an item itself to make suggestions. This approach has the advantage of being able to recommended previously unrated items to users with unique interests and to provide explanations for its recommendations. We describe a content-based book recommending system that utilizes information extraction and a machine-learning algorithm for text categorization.     Expert Finding by Capturing Organisational Knowledge from Legacy Documents

    Organisations capitalise on their best knowledge through the improvement of shared expertise which leads to a higher level of productivity and competency. The recognition of the need to foster the sharing of expertise has led to the development of expert finder systems that hold pointers to experts who posses specific knowledge in organisations. This paper discusses an approach to locating an expert through the application of information retrieval and analysis processes to an organization’s existing information resources, with specific reference to the engineering design domain. The approach taken was realised through an expert finder system framework. It enables the relationships of heterogeneous information sources with experts to be factored in modelling individuals’ expertise. These valuable relationships are typically ignored by existing expert finder systems, which only focus on how documents relate to their content. The developed framework also provides an architecture that can be easily adapted to different organisational environments. In addition, it also allows users to access the expertise recognition logic, giving them greater trust in the systems implemented using this framework.     Some like it hot - visual guidance for preference prediction

    For people first impressions of someone are of determining importance. They are hard to alter through further information. This begs the question if a computer can reach the same judgement. Earlier research has already pointed out that age, gender, and average attractiveness can be estimated with reasonable precision. We improve the state-of-the-art, but also predict - based on someone's known preferences - how much that particular person is attracted to a novel face. Our computational pipeline comprises a face detector, convolutional neural networks for the extraction of deep features, standard support vector regression for gender, age and facial beauty, and - as the main novelties - visual regularized collaborative filtering to infer inter-person preferences as well as a novel regression technique for handling visual queries without rating history. We validate the method using a very large dataset from a dating site as well as images from celebrities. Our experiments yield convincing results, i.e. we predict 76% of the ratings correctly solely based on an image, and reveal some sociologically relevant conclusions. We also validate our collaborative filtering solution on the standard MovieLens rating dataset, augmented with movie posters, to predict an individual's movie rating. We demonstrate our algorithms on howhot.io which went viral around the Internet with more than 50 million pictures evaluated in the first month.Comment: accepted for publication at CVPR 201

    Next challenges for adaptive learning systems

    Learning from evolving streaming data has become a 'hot' research topic in the last decade and many adaptive learning algorithms have been developed. This research was stimulated by rapidly growing amounts of industrial, transactional, sensor and other business data that arrives in real time and needs to be mined in real time. Under such circumstances, constant manual adjustment of models is in-efficient and with increasing amounts of data is becoming infeasible. Nevertheless, adaptive learning models are still rarely employed in business applications in practice. In the light of rapidly growing structurally rich 'big data', new generation of parallel computing solutions and cloud computing services as well as recent advances in portable computing devices, this article aims to identify the current key research directions to be taken to bring the adaptive learning closer to application needs. We identify six forthcoming challenges in designing and building adaptive learning (pre-diction) systems: making adaptive systems scalable, dealing with realistic data, improving usability and trust, integrat-ing expert knowledge, taking into account various application needs, and moving from adaptive algorithms towards adaptive tools. Those challenges are critical for the evolving stream settings, as the process of model building needs to be fully automated and continuous.</jats:p

    Intelligent Data Mining Techniques for Automatic Service Management

    Today, as more and more industries are involved in the artificial intelligence era, all business enterprises constantly explore innovative ways to expand their outreach and fulfill the high requirements from customers, with the purpose of gaining a competitive advantage in the marketplace. However, the success of a business highly relies on its IT service. Value-creating activities of a business cannot be accomplished without solid and continuous delivery of IT services especially in the increasingly intricate and specialized world. Driven by both the growing complexity of IT environments and rapidly changing business needs, service providers are urgently seeking intelligent data mining and machine learning techniques to build a cognitive ``brain in IT service management, capable of automatically understanding, reasoning and learning from operational data collected from human engineers and virtual engineers during the IT service maintenance. The ultimate goal of IT service management optimization is to maximize the automation of IT routine procedures such as problem detection, determination, and resolution. However, to fully automate the entire IT routine procedure is still a challenging task without any human intervention. In the real IT system, both the step-wise resolution descriptions and scripted resolutions are often logged with their corresponding problematic incidents, which typically contain abundant valuable human domain knowledge. Hence, modeling, gathering and utilizing the domain knowledge from IT system maintenance logs act as an extremely crucial role in IT service management optimization. To optimize the IT service management from the perspective of intelligent data mining techniques, three research directions are identified and considered to be greatly helpful for automatic service management: (1) efficiently extract and organize the domain knowledge from IT system maintenance logs; (2) online collect and update the existing domain knowledge by interactively recommending the possible resolutions; (3) automatically discover the latent relation among scripted resolutions and intelligently suggest proper scripted resolutions for IT problems. My dissertation addresses these challenges mentioned above by designing and implementing a set of intelligent data-driven solutions including (1) constructing the domain knowledge base for problem resolution inference; (2) online recommending resolution in light of the explicit hierarchical resolution categories provided by domain experts; and (3) interactively recommending resolution with the latent resolution relations learned through a collaborative filtering model

    A model for a collaborative recommender system for multimedia learning material

    Abstract. In a cluster of many servers containing heterogeneous multimedia learning material and serving users with different backgrounds (e.g. language, interests, previous knowledge, hardware and connectivity) it may be difficult for the learners to find a piece of material which fit their needs. This is the case of the COLDEX project. Recommender systems have been used to help people sift through all the available information to find that most valuable to them. We propose a recommender system, which suggest multimedia learning material based on the learner&apos;s background preferences as well as the available hardware and software that he/she has.
