Finding Top-k Dominance on Incomplete Big Data Using Map-Reduce Framework
Incomplete data is one major kind of multi-dimensional dataset that has random-distributed missing nodes in its dimensions. It is very difficult to retrieve information from this type of dataset when it becomes huge. Finding top-k dominant values in this type of dataset is a challenging procedure. Some algorithms are present to enhance this process but are mostly efficient only when dealing with a small-size incomplete data. One of the algorithms that make the application of TKD query possible is the Bitmap Index Guided (BIG) algorithm. This algorithm strongly improves the performance for incomplete data, but it is not originally capable of finding top-k dominant values in incomplete big data, nor is it designed to do so. Several other algorithms have been proposed to find the TKD query, such as Skyband Based and Upper Bound Based algorithms, but their performance is also questionable. Algorithms developed previously were among the first attempts to apply TKD query on incomplete data; however, all these had weak performances or were not compatible with the incomplete data. This thesis proposes MapReduced Enhanced Bitmap Index Guided Algorithm (MRBIG) for dealing with the aforementioned issues. MRBIG uses the MapReduce framework to enhance the performance of applying top-k dominance queries on huge incomplete datasets. The proposed approach uses the MapReduce parallel computing approach using multiple computing nodes. The framework separates the tasks between several computing nodes that independently and simultaneously work to find the result. This method has achieved up to two times faster processing time in finding the TKD query result in comparison to previously presented algorithms
Scalable Probabilistic Similarity Ranking in Uncertain Databases (Technical Report)
This paper introduces a scalable approach for probabilistic top-k similarity
ranking on uncertain vector data. Each uncertain object is represented by a set
of vector instances that are assumed to be mutually-exclusive. The objective is
to rank the uncertain data according to their distance to a reference object.
We propose a framework that incrementally computes for each object instance and
ranking position, the probability of the object falling at that ranking
position. The resulting rank probability distribution can serve as input for
several state-of-the-art probabilistic ranking models. Existing approaches
compute this probability distribution by applying a dynamic programming
approach of quadratic complexity. In this paper we theoretically as well as
experimentally show that our framework reduces this to a linear-time complexity
while having the same memory requirements, facilitated by incremental accessing
of the uncertain vector instances in increasing order of their distance to the
reference object. Furthermore, we show how the output of our method can be used
to apply probabilistic top-k ranking for the objects, according to different
state-of-the-art definitions. We conduct an experimental evaluation on
synthetic and real data, which demonstrates the efficiency of our approach
A probabilistic framework for tracking in wide-area environments
Surveillance in wide-area spatial environments is characterised by complex spatial layouts, large state space, and the use of multiple cameras/sensors. To solve this problem, there is a need for representing the dynamic and noisy data in the tracking tasks, and dealing with them at different levels of detail. This requirement is particularly suited to the Layered Dynamic Probabilistic Network (LDPN), a special type of Dynamic Probabilistic Network (DPN). In this paper, we propose the use of LDPN as the integrated framework for tracking in wide-area environments. We illustrate, with the help of a synthetic tracking scenario, how the parameters of the LDPN can be estimated from training data, and then used to draw predictions and answer queries about unseen tracks at various levels of detail.<br /
Structurally Tractable Uncertain Data
Many data management applications must deal with data which is uncertain,
incomplete, or noisy. However, on existing uncertain data representations, we
cannot tractably perform the important query evaluation tasks of determining
query possibility, certainty, or probability: these problems are hard on
arbitrary uncertain input instances. We thus ask whether we could restrict the
structure of uncertain data so as to guarantee the tractability of exact query
evaluation. We present our tractability results for tree and tree-like
uncertain data, and a vision for probabilistic rule reasoning. We also study
uncertainty about order, proposing a suitable representation, and study
uncertain data conditioned by additional observations.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, 1 table. To appear in SIGMOD/PODS PhD Symposium

Computing Multi-Relational Sufficient Statistics for Large Databases
Databases contain information about which relationships do and do not hold
among entities. To make this information accessible for statistical analysis
requires computing sufficient statistics that combine information from
different database tables. Such statistics may involve any number of {\em
positive and negative} relationships. With a naive enumeration approach,
computing sufficient statistics for negative relationships is feasible only for
small databases. We solve this problem with a new dynamic programming algorithm
that performs a virtual join, where the requisite counts are computed without
materializing join tables. Contingency table algebra is a new extension of
relational algebra, that facilitates the efficient implementation of this
M\"obius virtual join operation. The M\"obius Join scales to large datasets
(over 1M tuples) with complex schemas. Empirical evaluation with seven
benchmark datasets showed that information about the presence and absence of
links can be exploited in feature selection, association rule mining, and
Bayesian network learning.Comment: 11pages, 8 figures, 8 tables, CIKM'14,November 3--7, 2014, Shanghai,
