Review of Ad Hoc Networks scenarios and challenges in years 2015-2019
A Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) protocol performance analysis depends on the type of simulation tools, mobility models, and metrics used. These parameters\u27 choice is crucial to researchers because it may produce an inaccurate result if it is not well chosen. The challenges researcher is facing are on the choice of these four parameters. Our survey shows an inclination to used Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector routing (AODV) for performance comparison and enhancement of it by the researcher. Network simulation 2 (NS2) was the most selected tool, but we observe a decline in its utilization in recent years. Random Waypoint Mobility model (RWPM) was the most used mobility model. We have found a high percentage of the published article did not mention the mobility models use; this will make the result difficult for performance comparison with other works. Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), End to End Delay (E2ED) were the most used metrics. Some authors have self-developed their simulation tools; the authors have also used new metrics and protocols to get a particular result based on their research objective. However, some criteria of choosing a protocol, metrics, mobility model, and simulation tool were not described, decreasing the credibility of their papers\u27 results. Improvement needs to be done in the Ad-hoc network in terms of benchmark, acceptable scenario parameters. This survey will give the best practice to be used and some recommendations to the Ad-hoc network community
Performance evaluation of an efficient counter-based scheme for mobile ad hoc networks based on realistic mobility model
Flooding is the simplest and commonly used mechanism for broadcasting in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Despite its simplicity, it can result in high redundant retransmission, contention and collision in the network, a phenomenon referred to as broadcast storm problem. Several probabilistic broadcast schemes have been proposed to mitigate this problem inherent with flooding. Recently, we have proposed a hybrid-based scheme as one of the probabilistic scheme, which combines the advantages of pure probabilistic and counter-based schemes to yield a significant performance improvement. Despite these considerable numbers of proposed broadcast schemes, majority of these schemes’ performance evaluation was based on random waypoint model. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of our broadcast scheme using a community based mobility model which is based on social network theory and compare it against widely used random waypoint mobility model. Simulation results have shown that using unrealistic movement pattern does not truly reflect on the actual performance of the scheme in terms of saved-rebroadcast, reachability and end to end delay
Mobile Social Networking aided content dissemination in heterogeneous networks
Since more and more mobile applications are based on the proliferation of social information, the study of Mobile Social Net-works (MSNs) combines social sciences and wireless communications. Operating wireless networks more efficiently by exploiting social relationships between MSN users is an appealing but challenging option for network operators. An MSN-aided content dissemination technique is presented as a potential ex-tension of conventional cellular wireless net-works in order to satisfy growing data traffic. By allowing the MSN users to create a self-organized ad hoc network for spontaneously disseminating contents, the network operator may be able to reduce the operational costs and simultaneously achieve an improved network performance. In this paper, we first summarize the basic features of the MSN architecture, followed by a survey of the factors which may affect MSN-aided content dissemination. Using a case study, we demonstrate that one can save resources of the Base Station (BS) while substantially lowering content dissemination delay. Finally, other potential applications of MSN-aided content dissemination are introduced, and a range of future challenges are summarized
The Dynamics of Vehicular Networks in Urban Environments
Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs) have emerged as a platform to support
intelligent inter-vehicle communication and improve traffic safety and
performance. The road-constrained, high mobility of vehicles, their unbounded
power source, and the emergence of roadside wireless infrastructures make
VANETs a challenging research topic. A key to the development of protocols for
inter-vehicle communication and services lies in the knowledge of the
topological characteristics of the VANET communication graph. This paper
explores the dynamics of VANETs in urban environments and investigates the
impact of these findings in the design of VANET routing protocols. Using both
real and realistic mobility traces, we study the networking shape of VANETs
under different transmission and market penetration ranges. Given that a number
of RSUs have to be deployed for disseminating information to vehicles in an
urban area, we also study their impact on vehicular connectivity. Through
extensive simulations we investigate the performance of VANET routing protocols
by exploiting the knowledge of VANET graphs analysis.Comment: Revised our testbed with even more realistic mobility traces. Used

Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks
In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge,
and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor
Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system
that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining
certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control,
learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and
WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new
opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields
which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be
the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path
between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the
advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of
articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a
range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant
to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core
problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity,
localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the
existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from
robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in
the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature,
and identify topics that require more research attention in the future
