Kannada Character Recognition System A Review
Intensive research has been done on optical character recognition ocr and a
large number of articles have been published on this topic during the last few
decades. Many commercial OCR systems are now available in the market, but most
of these systems work for Roman, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters. There
are no sufficient number of works on Indian language character recognition
especially Kannada script among 12 major scripts in India. This paper presents
a review of existing work on printed Kannada script and their results. The
characteristics of Kannada script and Kannada Character Recognition System kcr
are discussed in detail. Finally fusion at the classifier level is proposed to
increase the recognition accuracy.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
Handwritten Character Recognition of South Indian Scripts: A Review
Handwritten character recognition is always a frontier area of research in
the field of pattern recognition and image processing and there is a large
demand for OCR on hand written documents. Even though, sufficient studies have
performed in foreign scripts like Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters, only
a very few work can be traced for handwritten character recognition of Indian
scripts especially for the South Indian scripts. This paper provides an
overview of offline handwritten character recognition in South Indian Scripts,
namely Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telungu.Comment: Paper presented on the "National Conference on Indian Language
Computing", Kochi, February 19-20, 2011. 6 pages, 5 figure
Component-based Segmentation of words from handwritten Arabic text
Efficient preprocessing is very essential for automatic recognition of handwritten documents. In this paper, techniques on segmenting words in handwritten Arabic text are presented. Firstly, connected components (ccs) are extracted, and distances among different components are analyzed. The statistical distribution of this distance is then obtained to determine an optimal threshold for words segmentation. Meanwhile, an improved projection based method is also employed for baseline detection. The proposed method has been successfully tested on IFN/ENIT database consisting of 26459 Arabic words handwritten by 411 different writers, and the results were promising and very encouraging in more accurate detection of the baseline and segmentation of words for further recognition
Diagonal Based Feature Extraction for Handwritten Alphabets Recognition System using Neural Network
An off-line handwritten alphabetical character recognition system using
multilayer feed forward neural network is described in the paper. A new method,
called, diagonal based feature extraction is introduced for extracting the
features of the handwritten alphabets. Fifty data sets, each containing 26
alphabets written by various people, are used for training the neural network
and 570 different handwritten alphabetical characters are used for testing. The
proposed recognition system performs quite well yielding higher levels of
recognition accuracy compared to the systems employing the conventional
horizontal and vertical methods of feature extraction. This system will be
suitable for converting handwritten documents into structural text form and
recognizing handwritten names
