    Gumsense - a high power low power sensor node

    The development of increasingly complex algorithms for sensor networks has made it difficult for researchers to implement their design on typical sensor network hardware with limited computing resources. The demands on hardware can also mean that small microcontrollers are not the ideal platform for testing computationally and/or memory intensive algorithms. Researchers would also like access to high level programming languages and a wider range of open source libraries. To address this problem we have designed and implemented an architecture, Gumsense which combines a low power micro-controller (8MHz MSP430) with a powerful processor (100-600MHz ARM) on a Gumstix board running Linux. This Open Embedded OS supports a wide variety of programming languages, package management and development tools. A similar hybrid approach was also used in the LEAP platform. The microcontroller wakes up frequently to manage tasks such as activating sensors and gathering data. The intended use-case is to power-up the ARM board and storage only during the brief periods it is needed, for example performing computation or communication

The operational and commercial demands of electric utilities require a high-performance data communication network that supports both existing functionalities and future operational requirements. In this respect, since such a communication network constitutes the core of the electric system automation applications, the design of a cost-effective and reliable network architecture is crucial. In this paper, the opportunities and challenges of a hybrid network architecture are discussed for electric system automation. More specifically, Internet based Virtual Private Networks, power line communications, satellite communications and wireless communications (wireless sensor networks, WiMAX and wireless mesh networks) are described in detail. The motivation of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the hybrid network architecture that can provide heterogeneous electric system automation application requirements. In this regard, our aim is to present a structured framework for electric utilities who plan to utilize new communication technologies for automation and hence, to make the decision making process more effective and direct.This work was supported by NEETRAC under Project #04-157

    Safety Verification of Fault Tolerant Goal-based Control Programs with Estimation Uncertainty

    Fault tolerance and safety verification of control systems that have state variable estimation uncertainty are essential for the success of autonomous robotic systems. A software control architecture called mission data system, developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, uses goal networks as the control program for autonomous systems. Certain types of goal networks can be converted into linear hybrid systems and verified for safety using existing symbolic model checking software. A process for calculating the probability of failure of certain classes of verifiable goal networks due to state estimation uncertainty is presented. A verifiable example task is presented and the failure probability of the control program based on estimation uncertainty is found

    Analysis methodology for flow-level evaluation of a hybrid mobile-sensor network

    Our society uses a large diversity of co-existing wired and wireless networks in order to satisfy its communication needs. A cooper- ation between these networks can benefit performance, service availabil- ity and deployment ease, and leads to the emergence of hybrid networks. This position paper focuses on a hybrid mobile-sensor network identify- ing potential advantages and challenges of its use and defining feasible applications. The main value of the paper, however, is in the proposed analysis approach to evaluate the performance at the mobile network side given the mixed mobile-sensor traffic. The approach combines packet- level analysis with modelling of flow-level behaviour and can be applied for the study of various application scenarios. In this paper we consider two applications with distinct traffic models namely multimedia traffic and best-effort traffic
