Graph Based Representation of Walden’s Paths in Drupal 7

The Walden’s Paths Project is used by different communities in order to create and use linear paths that link to documents available on the web. Walden’s Paths has been implemented as a web application using Drupal where a web service handles the core functionality of storage and representation of a Path data structure and a user interface uses this service for authoring and browsing of the paths. I have implemented an interactive user interface for representation of information for educational purpose in the form of a graph instead of a linear representation. This representation helps the users of the path to better understand the subject by understanding the conceptual structure of subject. The authoring interface is simple and easy to use and enables the authors of Walden’s Paths to represent the conceptual structure of a subject domain in the form of a graph. It allows for graphical representation of different types of relationships between various topic included in the Walden’s Paths. Such graphical representation of educational resources is similar to the concept of Topic Maps. The authoring tool for the Walden’s Paths has been implemented in Drupal 7. This Drupal 7 version of Walden’s Paths extends its implementation from a hypertextual system to a hypermedia system by supporting different document types like images, PDF, etc

Open Educational Practices and Resources. OLCOS Roadmap 2012

As a Transversal Action under the European eLearning Programme, the Open e-Learning Content Observatory Services (OLCOS) project carries out a set of activities that aim at fostering the creation, sharing and re-use of Open Educational Resources (OER) in Europe and beyond.OER are understood to comprise content for teaching and learning, software-based tools and services, and licenses that allow for open development and re-use of content, tools and services.The OLCOS road mapping work was conducted to provide decision makers with an overview of current and likely future developments in OER and recommendations on how various challenges in OER could be addressed.While the results of the road mapping will provide some basis for policy and institutional planning, strategic leadership and decision making is needed for implementing measures that are likely to promote a further uptake of open educational practices and resources.OER are understood to be an important element of policies that want to leverage education and lifelong learning for the knowledge economy and society. However, OLCOS emphasises that it is crucial to also promote innovation and change in educational practices.In particular, OLCOS warns that delivering OER to the still dominant model of teachercentred knowledge transfer will have little effect on equipping teachers, students and workers with the competences, knowledge and skills to participate successfully in the knowledge economy and society.This report emphasises the need to foster open practices of teaching and learning that are informed by a competency-based educational framework. However, it is understood that a shift towards such practices will only happen in the longer term in a step-by-step process. Bringing about this shift will require targeted and sustained efforts by educational leaders at all levels

Contexts and Contributions: Building the Distributed Library

This report updates and expands on A Survey of Digital Library Aggregation Services, originally commissioned by the DLF as an internal report in summer 2003, and released to the public later that year. It highlights major developments affecting the ecosystem of scholarly communications and digital libraries since the last survey and provides an analysis of OAI implementation demographics, based on a comparative review of repository registries and cross-archive search services. Secondly, it reviews the state-of-practice for a cohort of digital library aggregation services, grouping them in the context of the problem space to which they most closely adhere. Based in part on responses collected in fall 2005 from an online survey distributed to the original core services, the report investigates the purpose, function and challenges of next-generation aggregation services. On a case-by-case basis, the advances in each service are of interest in isolation from each other, but the report also attempts to situate these services in a larger context and to understand how they fit into a multi-dimensional and interdependent ecosystem supporting the worldwide community of scholars. Finally, the report summarizes the contributions of these services thus far and identifies obstacles requiring further attention to realize the goal of an open, distributed digital library system

Πολιτικές πρόσβασης και διάθεσης του ψηφιακού περιεχομένου βιβλιοθηκών

Στη διδακτορική διατριβή, εξετάζονται οι πολιτικές πρόσβασης και διάθεσης (στο εξής βλ. πολιτικές) του ψηφιακού περιεχομένου βιβλιοθηκών, σε σχέση με συγκεκριμένους παράγοντες, που, όπως έχει επισημανθεί στη διεθνή βιβλιογραφία, τις επηρεάζουν. Οι παράγοντες, αφορούν, στη μέθοδο πρόσκτησης, στην πνευματική ιδιοκτησία, στον τύπο περιεχομένου, στον τύπο προέλευσης ψηφιακού περιεχομένου και στον τύπο βιβλιοθήκης. Εξετάζεται η σχέση πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας και πολιτικών σε διάφορες χώρες παγκόσμια. Οι ηλεκτρονικές μεταπτυχιακές και διδακτορικές διατριβές, είναι η μελέτη περίπτωσης που επιλέγεται για την ανάλυση της σχέσης πολιτικών και τύπου περιεχομένου. Προτείνονται εναλλακτικές πολιτικές πρόσβασης για τέτοιου είδους περιεχόμενο. Οι εθνικές και ακαδημαϊκές βιβλιοθήκες παγκόσμια, αποτελούν το σημείο αναφοράς για την ανάλυση της σχέσης πολιτικών και τύπου βιβλιοθήκης. Το ερωτηματολόγιο, η προσωπική παρατήρηση και μελέτη της σχετικής βιβλιογραφίας, είναι οι μέθοδοι που χρησιμοποιούνται για τη συλλογή των στοιχείων της έρευνας. Εξάγονται κάποιοι γενικευμένοι κανόνες αναφορικά με τις ακολουθούμενες πρακτικές των βιβλιοθηκών στο θέμα των πολιτικών και σε συνάρτηση με τους παράγοντες. Διαπιστώνεται η απουσία ενός ενδεδειγμένου μοντέλου πολιτικών για το ψηφιακό περιεχόμενου των εθνικών και ακαδημαϊκών βιβλιοθηκών. Προτείνονται δύο ευέλικτα μοντέλα πολιτικών πρόσβασης και αναπαραγωγής για το ψηφιακό περιεχόμενο των εθνικών και ακαδημαϊκών βιβλιοθηκών αντίστοιχα. Τα μοντέλα, περιέχουν απλοποιημένους κανόνες πολιτικών, που προκύπτουν από τις κοινές πρακτικές των βιβλιοθηκών, οι οποίοι συμπληρώνονται από εναλλακτικές πολιτικές προτάσεις. Το κάθε μοντέλο, καταλήγει σε ένα δέντρο αποφάσεων, το οποίο προτείνει εναλλακτικούς και ευέλικτους δρόμους πολιτικών πρόσβασης και αναπαραγωγής ανάλογα με τους παράγοντες, τύπο προέλευσης ψηφιακού περιεχομένου, μέθοδο πρόσκτησης και πνευματική ιδιοκτησία, που ισχύουν σε κάθε περίπτωση. Τα προτεινόμενα μοντέλα και τα δέντρα αποφάσεων στα οποία καταλήγουν, φιλοδοξούν να συμβάλλουν στην επίλυση του προβλήματος των πολιτικών. Επίσης, θα μπορούσαν να αποτελέσουν χρήσιμα εργαλεία (οδηγούς) για τη χάραξη πολιτικών και τη διαχείριση της ψηφιακής πληροφορίας (ψηφιακού περιεχομένου) των εθνικών και ακαδημαϊκών βιβλιοθηκών
