Support for Reliable Distributed Computing
This technical report consists of two papers describing support for reliable distributed computing. Data Path Debugging: Data-Oriented Debugging for a Concurrent Programming Language explains our goal of data-oriented debugging, and then presents Data Path Expression (DPE) debugging, our approach to data-oriented debugging for concurrent programming languages. DPE is being implemented as pan of MD, the MELD Debugger. A Network Architecture for Reliable Distributed Computing proposes a reliable distributed environment (RDE) based on an efficient and reliable extension to datagram communications. It gives simulation results for coupled relations based on different algorithmsĂŻÂĽĹ’ node failure rate, recover rate, message sending rate and data missing rate, and to illustrate behavior of distributed systems constructed using our view section model on top of RDE
A programming and a modelling perspective on the evaluation of Java card implementations
Java Card Technology has provided a huge step forward in programming smart cards: from assembler to using a high level Object Oriented language. However, the authors have found some differences between the current Java Card version (2.1) and main stream Java that may restrict the benefits of using Java achievable in smartcard programming. In particular, efforts towards evaluating Java Card implementations at a high level of assurance may be hampered by the presence of these differences as well as by the complexity of the Java Card VM and API. Content Management System for Personally Driven Web Site
The goal of the project was to develop a simple content management system that could
be easily used both as a standalone web application and as a part of a more complex
system. The application was supposed to consist of several key modules: commentary
engine, search engine, navigation system and authentication system.
To create a content management system the implementations of the most common
design patterns provided by PHP Zend Framework were used. The application was
developed and tested on Ubuntu Linux with Apache web server and MySQL database
server.
The final version of the project represented a content management system with a
navigation system based on item categorization. The application consisted of multiple
classes: the ones provided by Zend Framework and the ones created to fulfill
application-specific requirements. The system extensively used the benefits of object
oriented programming and the model-view-controller design pattern.
The results of the project allowed making several conclusions. First, although it is faster
to develop the application using the agile programming model, such a technique leads to
less optimized code then, if the design of the application was supported by a unified
modeling language. Second, object-oriented programming provides the application with
a high level of reusability and also makes it possible to employ only certain parts of the
software
Injecting continuous time execution into service-oriented computing
Service-Oriented Computing is a computing paradigm that utilizes services as fundamental elements to support rapid, low-cost development of distributed applications in heterogeneous environments. In Service-Oriented Computing, a service is defined as an independent and autonomous piece of functionality which can be described, published, discovered and used in a uniform way. SENSORIA Reference Modeling Language is developed in the IST-FET integrated project. It provides a formal abstraction for services at the business level.
Hybrid systems arise in embedded control when components that perform discrete changes are coupled with components that perform continuous processes. Normally, the discrete changes can be modeled by finite-state machines and the continuous processes can be modeled by differential equations. In an abstract point of view, hybrid systems are mixtures of continuous dynamics and discrete events. Hybrid systems are studied in different research areas. In the computer science area, a hybrid system is modeled as a discrete computer program interacting with an analog environment.
In this thesis, we inject continuous time execution into Service-Oriented Computing by giving a formal abstraction for hybrid systems at the business level in a Service-Oriented point of view, and develop a method for formal verifications. In order to achieve the first part of this goal, we make a hybrid extension of Service-Oriented Doubly Labeled Transition Systems, named with Service-Oriented Hybrid Doubly Labeled Transition Systems, make an extension of the SENSORIA Reference Modeling Language and interpret it over Service-Oriented Hybrid Doubly Labeled Transition Systems. To achieve the second part of this goal, we adopt Temporal Dynamic Logic formulas and a set of sequent calculus rules for verifying the formulas, and develop a method for transforming the SENSORIA Reference Modeling Language specification of a certain service module into the respective Temporal Dynamic Logic formulas that could be verified. Moreover, we provide a case study of a simplified small part of the European Train Control System which is specified and verified with the approach introduced above.
We also provide an approach of implementing the case study model with the IBM Websphere Process Server, which is a comprehensive Service-Oriented Architecture integration platform and provides support for the Service Component Architecture programming model. In order to realize this approach, we also provide functions that map models specified with the SENSORIA Reference Modeling Language to Websphere Process Server applications
Early aspects: aspect-oriented requirements engineering and architecture design
This paper reports on the third Early Aspects: Aspect-Oriented Requirements Engineering and Architecture Design Workshop, which has been held in Lancaster, UK, on March 21, 2004. The workshop included a presentation session and working sessions in which the particular topics on early aspects were discussed. The primary goal of the workshop was to focus on challenges to defining methodical software development processes for aspects from early on in the software life cycle and explore the potential of proposed methods and techniques to scale up to industrial applications
A Context-Oriented Extension of F#

to adapt program behaviour depending on the evolution of their operational

Reusable Knowledge-based Components for Building Software Applications: A Knowledge Modelling Approach
In computer science, different types of reusable components for building software applications were proposed as a direct consequence of the emergence of new software programming paradigms. The success of these components for building applications depends on factors such as the flexibility in their combination or the facility for their selection in centralised or distributed environments such as internet. In this article, we propose a general type of reusable component, called primitive of representation, inspired by a knowledge-based approach that can promote reusability. The proposal can be understood as a generalisation of existing partial solutions that is applicable to both software and knowledge engineering for the development of hybrid applications that integrate conventional and knowledge based techniques. The article presents the structure and use of the component and describes our recent experience in the development of real-world applications based on this approach
