Thesauri on the Web: current developments and trends
This article provides an overview of recent developments relating to the application of thesauri in information organisation and retrieval on the World Wide Web. It describes some recent thesaurus projects undertaken to facilitate resource description and discovery and access to wide-ranging information resources on the Internet. Types of thesauri available on the Web, thesauri integrated in databases and information retrieval systems, and multiple-thesaurus systems for cross-database searching are also discussed. Collective efforts and events in addressing the standardisation and novel applications of thesauri are briefly reviewed
Composite Correlation Quantization for Efficient Multimodal Retrieval
Efficient similarity retrieval from large-scale multimodal database is
pervasive in modern search engines and social networks. To support queries
across content modalities, the system should enable cross-modal correlation and
computation-efficient indexing. While hashing methods have shown great
potential in achieving this goal, current attempts generally fail to learn
isomorphic hash codes in a seamless scheme, that is, they embed multiple
modalities in a continuous isomorphic space and separately threshold embeddings
into binary codes, which incurs substantial loss of retrieval accuracy. In this
paper, we approach seamless multimodal hashing by proposing a novel Composite
Correlation Quantization (CCQ) model. Specifically, CCQ jointly finds
correlation-maximal mappings that transform different modalities into
isomorphic latent space, and learns composite quantizers that convert the
isomorphic latent features into compact binary codes. An optimization framework
is devised to preserve both intra-modal similarity and inter-modal correlation
through minimizing both reconstruction and quantization errors, which can be
trained from both paired and partially paired data in linear time. A
comprehensive set of experiments clearly show the superior effectiveness and
efficiency of CCQ against the state of the art hashing methods for both
unimodal and cross-modal retrieval
Access to recorded interviews: A research agenda
Recorded interviews form a rich basis for scholarly inquiry. Examples include oral histories, community memory projects, and interviews conducted for broadcast media. Emerging technologies offer the potential to radically transform the way in which recorded interviews are made accessible, but this vision will demand substantial investments from a broad range of research communities. This article reviews the present state of practice for making recorded interviews available and the state-of-the-art for key component technologies. A large number of important research issues are identified, and from that set of issues, a coherent research agenda is proposed
Visualization of database structures for information retrieval
This paper describes the Book House system, which is designed to support children's information retrieval in libraries as part of their education. It is a shareware program available on CDâROM or floppy disks, and comprises functionality for database searching as well as for classifying and storing book information in the database. The system concept is based on an understanding of children's domain structures and their capabilities for categorization of information needs in connection with their activities in schools, in school libraries or in public libraries. These structures are visualized in the interface by using metaphors and multimedia technology. Through the use of text, images and animation, the Book House encourages children â even at a very early age â to learn by doing in an enjoyable way, which plays on their previous experiences with computer games. Both words and pictures can be used for searching; this makes the system suitable for all age groups. Even children who have not yet learned to read properly can, by selecting pictures, search for and find those books they would like to have read aloud. Thus, at the very beginning of their school life, they can learn to search for books on their own. For the library community, such a system will provide an extended service which will increase the number of children's own searches and also improve the relevance, quality and utilization of the book collections in the libraries. A market research report on the need for an annual indexing service for books in the Book House format is in preparation by the Danish Library Centre A/S
