Efficient Localization of Discontinuities in Complex Computational Simulations
Surrogate models for computational simulations are input-output
approximations that allow computationally intensive analyses, such as
uncertainty propagation and inference, to be performed efficiently. When a
simulation output does not depend smoothly on its inputs, the error and
convergence rate of many approximation methods deteriorate substantially. This
paper details a method for efficiently localizing discontinuities in the input
parameter domain, so that the model output can be approximated as a piecewise
smooth function. The approach comprises an initialization phase, which uses
polynomial annihilation to assign function values to different regions and thus
seed an automated labeling procedure, followed by a refinement phase that
adaptively updates a kernel support vector machine representation of the
separating surface via active learning. The overall approach avoids structured
grids and exploits any available simplicity in the geometry of the separating
surface, thus reducing the number of model evaluations required to localize the
discontinuity. The method is illustrated on examples of up to eleven
dimensions, including algebraic models and ODE/PDE systems, and demonstrates
improved scaling and efficiency over other discontinuity localization
approaches
An Exact No Free Lunch Theorem for Community Detection
A precondition for a No Free Lunch theorem is evaluation with a loss function
which does not assume a priori superiority of some outputs over others. A
previous result for community detection by Peel et al. (2017) relies on a
mismatch between the loss function and the problem domain. The loss function
computes an expectation over only a subset of the universe of possible outputs;
thus, it is only asymptotically appropriate with respect to the problem size.
By using the correct random model for the problem domain, we provide a
stronger, exact No Free Lunch theorem for community detection. The claim
generalizes to other set-partitioning tasks including core/periphery
separation, -clustering, and graph partitioning. Finally, we review the
literature of proposed evaluation functions and identify functions which
(perhaps with slight modifications) are compatible with an exact No Free Lunch
theorem
A maximal clique based multiobjective evolutionary algorithm for overlapping community detection
Detecting community structure has become one im-portant technique for studying complex networks. Although many community detection algorithms have been proposed, most of them focus on separated communities, where each node can be-long to only one community. However, in many real-world net-works, communities are often overlapped with each other. De-veloping overlapping community detection algorithms thus be-comes necessary. Along this avenue, this paper proposes a maxi-mal clique based multiobjective evolutionary algorithm for over-lapping community detection. In this algorithm, a new represen-tation scheme based on the introduced maximal-clique graph is presented. Since the maximal-clique graph is defined by using a set of maximal cliques of original graph as nodes and two maximal cliques are allowed to share the same nodes of the original graph, overlap is an intrinsic property of the maximal-clique graph. Attributing to this property, the new representation scheme al-lows multiobjective evolutionary algorithms to handle the over-lapping community detection problem in a way similar to that of the separated community detection, such that the optimization problems are simplified. As a result, the proposed algorithm could detect overlapping community structure with higher partition accuracy and lower computational cost when compared with the existing ones. The experiments on both synthetic and real-world networks validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm
