Strong Turing Degrees for Additive BSS RAM's
For the additive real BSS machines using only constants 0 and 1 and order
tests we consider the corresponding Turing reducibility and characterize some
semi-decidable decision problems over the reals. In order to refine,
step-by-step, a linear hierarchy of Turing degrees with respect to this model,
we define several halting problems for classes of additive machines with
different abilities and construct further suitable decision problems. In the
construction we use methods of the classical recursion theory as well as
techniques for proving bounds resulting from algebraic properties. In this way
we extend a known hierarchy of problems below the halting problem for the
additive machines using only equality tests and we present a further
subhierarchy of semi-decidable problems between the halting problems for the
additive machines using only equality tests and using order tests,
respectively
Quantum Bounded Query Complexity
We combine the classical notions and techniques for bounded query classes
with those developed in quantum computing. We give strong evidence that quantum
queries to an oracle in the class NP does indeed reduce the query complexity of
decision problems. Under traditional complexity assumptions, we obtain an
exponential speedup between the quantum and the classical query complexity of
function classes.
For decision problems and function classes we obtain the following results: o
P_||^NP[2k] is included in EQP_||^NP[k] o P_||^NP[2^(k+1)-2] is included in
EQP^NP[k] o FP_||^NP[2^(k+1)-2] is included in FEQP^NP[2k] o FP_||^NP is
included in FEQP^NP[O(log n)] For sets A that are many-one complete for PSPACE
or EXP we show that FP^A is included in FEQP^A[1]. Sets A that are many-one
complete for PP have the property that FP_||^A is included in FEQP^A[1]. In
general we prove that for any set A there is a set X such that FP^A is included
in FEQP^X[1], establishing that no set is superterse in the quantum setting.Comment: 11 pages LaTeX2e, no figures, accepted for CoCo'9
On the possible Computational Power of the Human Mind
The aim of this paper is to address the question: Can an artificial neural
network (ANN) model be used as a possible characterization of the power of the
human mind? We will discuss what might be the relationship between such a model
and its natural counterpart. A possible characterization of the different power
capabilities of the mind is suggested in terms of the information contained (in
its computational complexity) or achievable by it. Such characterization takes
advantage of recent results based on natural neural networks (NNN) and the
computational power of arbitrary artificial neural networks (ANN). The possible
acceptance of neural networks as the model of the human mind's operation makes
the aforementioned quite relevant.Comment: Complexity, Science and Society Conference, 2005, University of

Immunity and Simplicity for Exact Counting and Other Counting Classes
Ko [RAIRO 24, 1990] and Bruschi [TCS 102, 1992] showed that in some
relativized world, PSPACE (in fact, ParityP) contains a set that is immune to
the polynomial hierarchy (PH). In this paper, we study and settle the question
of (relativized) separations with immunity for PH and the counting classes PP,
C_{=}P, and ParityP in all possible pairwise combinations. Our main result is
that there is an oracle A relative to which C_{=}P contains a set that is
immune to BPP^{ParityP}. In particular, this C_{=}P^A set is immune to PH^{A}
and ParityP^{A}. Strengthening results of Tor\'{a}n [J.ACM 38, 1991] and Green
[IPL 37, 1991], we also show that, in suitable relativizations, NP contains a
C_{=}P-immune set, and ParityP contains a PP^{PH}-immune set. This implies the
existence of a C_{=}P^{B}-simple set for some oracle B, which extends results
of Balc\'{a}zar et al. [SIAM J.Comp. 14, 1985; RAIRO 22, 1988] and provides the
first example of a simple set in a class not known to be contained in PH. Our
proof technique requires a circuit lower bound for ``exact counting'' that is
derived from Razborov's [Mat. Zametki 41, 1987] lower bound for majority.Comment: 20 page
