    Software-based fault-tolerant routing algorithm in multidimensional networks

    Massively parallel computing systems are being built with hundreds or thousands of components such as nodes, links, memories, and connectors. The failure of a component in such systems will not only reduce the computational power but also alter the network's topology. The software-based fault-tolerant routing algorithm is a popular routing to achieve fault-tolerance capability in networks. This algorithm is initially proposed only for two dimensional networks (Suh et al., 2000). Since, higher dimensional networks have been widely employed in many contemporary massively parallel systems; this paper proposes an approach to extend this routing scheme to these indispensable higher dimensional networks. Deadlock and livelock freedom and the performance of presented algorithm, have been investigated for networks with different dimensionality and various fault regions. Furthermore, performance results have been presented through simulation experiments

    Analytical modelling of hot-spot traffic in deterministically-routed k-ary n-cubes

    Many research studies have proposed analytical models to evaluate the performance of k-ary n-cubes with deterministic wormhole routing. Such models however have so far been confined to uniform traffic distributions. There has been hardly any model proposed that deal with non-uniform traffic distributions that could arise due to, for instance, the presence of hot-spots in the network. This paper proposes the first analytical model to predict message latency in k-ary n-cubes with deterministic routing in the presence of hot-spots. The validity of the model is demonstrated by comparing analytical results with those obtained through extensive simulation experiments

    The impacts of timing constraints on virtual channels multiplexing in interconnect networks

    Interconnect networks employing wormhole-switching play a critical role in shared memory multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoC) designs, multicomputer systems and system area networks. Virtual channels greatly improve the performance of wormhole-switched networks because they reduce blocking by acting as "bypass" lanes for non-blocked messages. Capturing the effects of virtual channel multiplexing has always been a crucial issue for any analytical model proposed for wormhole-switched networks. Dally has developed a model to investigate the behaviour of this multiplexing which have been widely employed in the subsequent analytical models of most routing algorithms suggested in the literature. It is indispensable to modify Dally's model in order to evaluate the performance of channel multiplexing in more general networks where restrictions such as timing constraints of input arrivals and finite buffer size of queues are common. In this paper we consider timing constraints of input arrivals to investigate the virtual channel multiplexing problem inherent in most current networks. The analysis that we propose is completely general and therefore can be used with any interconnect networks employing virtual channels. The validity of the proposed equations has been verified through simulation experiments under different working conditions

    A Switch Architecture for Real-Time Multimedia Communications

    In this paper we present a switch that can be used to transfer multimedia type of trafJic. The switch provides a guaranteed throughput and a bounded latency. We focus on the design of a prototype Switching Element using the new technology opportunities being offered today. The architecture meets the multimedia requirements but still has a low complexity and needs a minimum amount of hardware. A main item of this paper will be the background of the architectural design decisions made. These include the interconnection topology, buffer organization, routing and scheduling. The implementation of the switching fabric with FPGAs, allows us to experiment with switching mode, routing strategy and scheduling policy in a multimedia environment. The witching elements are interconnected in a Kautz topology. Kautz graphs have interesting properties such as: a small diametec the degree is independent of the network size, the network is fault-tolerant and has a simple routing algorithm

    OutFlank Routing: Increasing Throughput in Toroidal Interconnection Networks

    We present a new, deadlock-free, routing scheme for toroidal interconnection networks, called OutFlank Routing (OFR). OFR is an adaptive strategy which exploits non-minimal links, both in the source and in the destination nodes. When minimal links are congested, OFR deroutes packets to carefully chosen intermediate destinations, in order to obtain travel paths which are only an additive constant longer than the shortest ones. Since routing performance is very sensitive to changes in the traffic model or in the router parameters, an accurate discrete-event simulator of the toroidal network has been developed to empirically validate OFR, by comparing it against other relevant routing strategies, over a range of typical real-world traffic patterns. On the 16x16x16 (4096 nodes) simulated network OFR exhibits improvements of the maximum sustained throughput between 14% and 114%, with respect to Adaptive Bubble Routing.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, to be presented at ICPADS 201

    General broadcasting algorithms in one-port wormhole routed hypercubes

    Wormhole routing has been accepted as an efficient switching mechanism in point-to-point interconnection networks. Here the network resource, i.e. node buffers and communication channels, are effectively utilized to deliver message across the network; We consider the problem of broadcasting a message in the hypercue equipped with the wormhole switching mechanism. The model is a generalization of an earlier work and considers a broadcast path-length of {dollar}m\ (1\leq m\leq n{dollar}) in the n-cube with a single-port communication capability. In this thesis, the scheme of e-cube and a Gray code path routing and intermediate reception capability have been adopted in order to solve the problem of broadcasting in one-port wormhole routed hypercubes. Two methods have been suggested; one is based on utilizing the Gray codes (Gray code path-based routing), while the other is based on the recursive partitioning of the cube (cube-based routing). The number of routing steps in both methods are compared to those in the previous results, as well as to the lower bounds derived based on the path-length m assumption. A cube-based and a path-based algorithm give {dollar}T(R)+(k\sb{c}+1)T(m){dollar} and {dollar}k\sb{G} +T(m){dollar} routing steps, respectively. By comparison with routing steps of both algorithms, the performance of the path-based algorithm shows better than that of the cube-based; The results of this work are significant and can be used for immediate implementation in contemporary machines most of which are equipped with wormhole routing and serial communication capability
