    Re-use of an ontology for modelling urban energy systems

    The use of ontologies for the interoperability of software models is widespread, with many applications also in the energy domain. By formulating a shared data structure and a definition of concepts and their properties, a language is created that can be used between modellers and - formalised in an ontology - between model components. When modelling energy systems, connections between different infrastructures are critical, e.g. the interaction between the gas and electricity markets or the need for various infrastructures including power, heat, water and transport in cities. While a commonly shared ontology of energy systems would be highly desirable, the fact is that different existing models or applications already use dedicated ontologies, and have been demonstrated to work well using them. To benefit from linking data sources and connecting models developed with different ontologies, a translation between concepts can be made. In this paper a model of an urban energy system built upon one ontology is initialised using energy transformation technologies defined in another ontology, thus illustrating how this common perspective might benefit researchers in the energy domain. ©2010 IEEE

    The circular economy: An interdisciplinary exploration of the concept and application in a global context

    There have long been calls from industry for guidance in implementing strategies for sustainable development. The Circular Economy represents the most recent attempt to conceptualize the integration of economic activity and environmental wellbeing in a sustainable way. This set of ideas has been adopted by China as the basis of their economic development (included in both the 11th and the 12th ‘Five Year Plan’), escalating the concept in minds of western policymakers and NGOs. This paper traces the conceptualisations and origins of the Circular Economy, tracing its meanings, and exploring its antecedents in economics and ecology, and discusses how the Circular Economy has been operationalized in business and policy. The paper finds that while the Circular Economy places emphasis on the redesign of processes and cycling of materials, which may contribute to more sustainable business models, it also encapsulates tensions and limitations. These include an absence of the social dimension inherent in sustainable development that limits its ethical dimensions, and some unintended consequences. This leads us to propose a revised definition of the Circular Economy as “an economic model wherein planning, resourcing, procurement, production and reprocessing are designed and managed, as both process and output, to maximize ecosystem functioning and human well-being”

    Through a Model, Darkly: An Investigation of Modellers’ Conceptualisation of Uncertainty in Climate and Energy Systems Modelling and an Application to Epidemiology

    Policy responses to climate change require the use of complex computer models to understand the physical dynamics driving change, to evaluate its impacts and to evaluate the efficacy and costs of different mitigation and adaptation options. These models are often complex and built by large teams of dedicated researchers. All modelling requires assumptions, approximations and analytic conveniences to be employed. No model is without uncertainty. Authors have attempted to understand these uncertainties over the years and have developed detailed typologies to deal with them. However, it remains unknown how modellers themselves conceptualise the uncertainty inherent in their work. The core of this thesis involves the interviews of 38 modellers from climate science, energy systems modelling and integrated assessment to understand how they conceptualise the uncertainty in their work. This study finds that there is diversity in how uncertainty is understood and that various concepts from the literature are selectively employed to organise uncertainties. Uncertainty analysis is conceived as consisting of different phases in the model development process. The interplay between the complexity of the model and the capacities of modellers to manipulate these models shapes the ways in which uncertainty can be conceptualised. How we can attempt to wrangle with uncertainty in the present is determined by the path-dependent decisions made in the past; decisions that are influenced by a variety of factors within the context of the model’s creation. Furthermore, this thesis examines the application of these concepts to another field, epidemiology, to examine their generalisability in other contexts. This thesis concludes that in a situation such as climate change, where the nature of the problem changes in a dynamic way, emphasis should be placed on reducing the grip of these path dependencies and the resource costs of adapting models to face new challenges and answer new policy questions

    Uncertainty in geological and hydrogeological data

    Uncertainty in conceptual model structure and in environmental data is of essential interest when dealing with uncertainty in water resources management. To make quantification of uncertainty possible is it necessary to identify and characterise the uncertainty in geological and hydrogeological data. This paper discusses a range of available techniques to describe the uncertainty related to geological model structure and scale of support. Literature examples on uncertainty in hydrogeological variables such as saturated hydraulic conductivity, specific yield, specific storage, effective porosity and dispersivity are given. Field data usually have a spatial and temporal scale of support that is different from the one on which numerical models for water resources management operate.     Collaborative water-resource governance in the UK: Understanding network structure and functionality of a catchment-based approach to water-quality management

    Since 2011 water resource governance in the UK has begun to integrate a collaborative multi-stakeholder approach to water-quality management. The Catchment-Based Approach (CaBA) facilitates local partnerships of stakeholders to co-create plans, align actions, and make collective decisions about efforts to improve and protect local river and stream environments. The approach offers potential for the enactment of effective, equitable and sustainable water management, but it is often unclear how such efforts are characterised practically. The multiplicity of stakeholders and complexity of issues and influences contribute to difficulty in discerning how governance change is functioning. This thesis uses a case study of the River Wear Catchment, North East England, where stakeholders have been operating CaBA, to begin to explore the patterns and drivers of actions and interactions that facilitate collaborative water-resource governance at the stakeholder level. Drawing on the concept of the catchment as a complex, social-environmental system, this research utilises insights from stakeholders and a combination of analytical methods, including a network approach and agent-based modelling, to provide new perspectives on the network structure and functioning of multi-stakeholder water management. A network approach is used to build a picture of interactions amongst stakeholders and to reveal the nature of the new relationships built through CaBA. Qualitative analysis of interview data identifies key influences on the decision-making of stakeholders and the functionality of new and existing networks of relations at three levels; the interactional, individual and contextual. Agent-based modelling is then used as a heuristic research tool to combine knowledge of relational structures with influences on stakeholder behaviour to experiment with potential dynamics of the system through a specific water-quality, problem-based scenario. The combination of these analytical methods allows a more in-depth and dynamic understanding of the patterns and processes of CaBA than has been revealed previously. The thesis ultimately comments on the utility of such methods for creating new understandings of the operationalisation of water governance processes, and for the utility of those new understandings to inform and question the facilitation of effective and satisfactory delivery of collaborative multi-stakeholder water-quality management at the catchment-scale
