Incorporating Agile with MDA Case Study: Online Polling System
Nowadays agile software development is used in greater extend but for small
organizations only, whereas MDA is suitable for large organizations but yet not
standardized. In this paper the pros and cons of Model Driven Architecture
(MDA) and Extreme programming have been discussed. As both of them have some
limitations and cannot be used in both large scale and small scale
organizations a new architecture has been proposed. In this model it is tried
to opt the advantages and important values to overcome the limitations of both
the software development procedures. In support to the proposed architecture

Embedding accessibility and usability: considerations for e-learning research and development projects
This paper makes the case that if eâlearning research and development projects are to be successfully adopted in realâworld teaching and learning contexts, then they must effectively address accessibility and usability issues; and that these need to be integrated throughout the project. As such, accessibility and usability issues need to be made explicit in project documentation, along with allocation of appropriate resources and time. We argue that accessibility and usability are intrinsically interâlinked. An integrated accessibility and usability evaluation methodology that we have developed is presented and discussed. XP customer practices: A grounded theory
The Customer is a critical role in XP, but almost all XP practices are presented for developers by developers. While XP calls for Real Customer Involvement, it does not explain what XP Customers should do, nor how they should do it. Using Grounded Theory, we discovered eight customer practices used by successful XP teams: Customer Boot Camp, Customerâs Apprentice, Customer Pairing, and Programmerâs Holiday support the well-being and effectiveness of customers; Programmer On-site and Road shows support team and organization interactions; and Big Picture Up Front and Re-calibration support Customers steering the whole project. Coordination Implications of Software Coupling in Open Source Projects
The effect of software coupling on the quality of software has been studied quite widely since the seminal paper on software modularity by Parnas [1]. However, the effect of the increase in software coupling on the coordination of the developers has not been researched as much. In commercial software development environments there normally are coordination mechanisms in place to manage the coordination requirements due to software dependencies. But, in the case of Open Source software such coordination mechanisms are harder to implement, as the developers tend to rely solely on electronic means of communication. Hence, an understanding of the changing coordination requirements is essential to the management of an Open Source project. In this paper we study the effect of changes in software coupling on the coordination requirements in a case study of a popular Open Source project called JBoss
Vulnerable Open Source Dependencies: Counting Those That Matter
BACKGROUND: Vulnerable dependencies are a known problem in today's
open-source software ecosystems because OSS libraries are highly interconnected
and developers do not always update their dependencies. AIMS: In this paper we
aim to present a precise methodology, that combines the code-based analysis of
patches with information on build, test, update dates, and group extracted from
the very code repository, and therefore, caters to the needs of industrial
practice for correct allocation of development and audit resources. METHOD: To
understand the industrial impact of the proposed methodology, we considered the
200 most popular OSS Java libraries used by SAP in its own software. Our
analysis included 10905 distinct GAVs (group, artifact, version) when
considering all the library versions. RESULTS: We found that about 20% of the
dependencies affected by a known vulnerability are not deployed, and therefore,
they do not represent a danger to the analyzed library because they cannot be
exploited in practice. Developers of the analyzed libraries are able to fix
(and actually responsible for) 82% of the deployed vulnerable dependencies. The
vast majority (81%) of vulnerable dependencies may be fixed by simply updating
to a new version, while 1% of the vulnerable dependencies in our sample are
halted, and therefore, potentially require a costly mitigation strategy.
CONCLUSIONS: Our case study shows that the correct counting allows software
development companies to receive actionable information about their library
dependencies, and therefore, correctly allocate costly development and audit
resources, which is spent inefficiently in case of distorted measurements.Comment: This is a pre-print of the paper that appears, with the same title,

Scaling the Management of Extreme Programming Projects
XP is a code-oriented, light-weight software engineering methodology, suited
merely for small-sized teams who develop software that relies on vague or
rapidly changing requirements. Being very code-oriented, the discipline of
systems engineering knows it as approach of incremental system change. In this
contribution, we discuss the enhanced version of a concept on how to extend XP
on large scale projects with hundreds of software engineers and programmers,
respectively. Previous versions were already presented in [1] and [12]. The
basic idea is to apply the "hierarchical approach", a management principle of
reorganizing companies, as well as well-known moderation principles to XP
project organization. We show similarities between software engineering methods
and company reorganization processes and discuss how the elements of the
hierarchical approach can improve XP. We provide guidelines on how to scale up
XP to very large projects e.g. those common in telecommunication industry and
IT technology consultancy firms by using moderation techniques.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
