Distributed Low-rank Subspace Segmentation
Vision problems ranging from image clustering to motion segmentation to
semi-supervised learning can naturally be framed as subspace segmentation
problems, in which one aims to recover multiple low-dimensional subspaces from
noisy and corrupted input data. Low-Rank Representation (LRR), a convex
formulation of the subspace segmentation problem, is provably and empirically
accurate on small problems but does not scale to the massive sizes of modern
vision datasets. Moreover, past work aimed at scaling up low-rank matrix
factorization is not applicable to LRR given its non-decomposable constraints.
In this work, we propose a novel divide-and-conquer algorithm for large-scale
subspace segmentation that can cope with LRR's non-decomposable constraints and
maintains LRR's strong recovery guarantees. This has immediate implications for
the scalability of subspace segmentation, which we demonstrate on a benchmark
face recognition dataset and in simulations. We then introduce novel
applications of LRR-based subspace segmentation to large-scale semi-supervised
learning for multimedia event detection, concept detection, and image tagging.
In each case, we obtain state-of-the-art results and order-of-magnitude speed

Robust Principal Component Analysis?
This paper is about a curious phenomenon. Suppose we have a data matrix,
which is the superposition of a low-rank component and a sparse component. Can
we recover each component individually? We prove that under some suitable
assumptions, it is possible to recover both the low-rank and the sparse
components exactly by solving a very convenient convex program called Principal
Component Pursuit; among all feasible decompositions, simply minimize a
weighted combination of the nuclear norm and of the L1 norm. This suggests the
possibility of a principled approach to robust principal component analysis
since our methodology and results assert that one can recover the principal
components of a data matrix even though a positive fraction of its entries are
arbitrarily corrupted. This extends to the situation where a fraction of the
entries are missing as well. We discuss an algorithm for solving this
optimization problem, and present applications in the area of video
surveillance, where our methodology allows for the detection of objects in a
cluttered background, and in the area of face recognition, where it offers a
principled way of removing shadows and specularities in images of faces
Tensor Computation: A New Framework for High-Dimensional Problems in EDA
Many critical EDA problems suffer from the curse of dimensionality, i.e. the
very fast-scaling computational burden produced by large number of parameters
and/or unknown variables. This phenomenon may be caused by multiple spatial or
temporal factors (e.g. 3-D field solvers discretizations and multi-rate circuit
simulation), nonlinearity of devices and circuits, large number of design or
optimization parameters (e.g. full-chip routing/placement and circuit sizing),
or extensive process variations (e.g. variability/reliability analysis and
design for manufacturability). The computational challenges generated by such
high dimensional problems are generally hard to handle efficiently with
traditional EDA core algorithms that are based on matrix and vector
computation. This paper presents "tensor computation" as an alternative general
framework for the development of efficient EDA algorithms and tools. A tensor
is a high-dimensional generalization of a matrix and a vector, and is a natural
choice for both storing and solving efficiently high-dimensional EDA problems.
This paper gives a basic tutorial on tensors, demonstrates some recent examples
of EDA applications (e.g., nonlinear circuit modeling and high-dimensional
uncertainty quantification), and suggests further open EDA problems where the
