Recent Advances in Indoor Localization Systems and Technologies
Despite the enormous technical progress seen in the past few years, the maturity of indoor localization technologies has not yet reached the level of GNSS solutions. The 23 selected papers in this book present the recent advances and new developments in indoor localization systems and technologies, propose novel or improved methods with increased performance, provide insight into various aspects of quality control, and also introduce some unorthodox positioning methods
Smart hierarchical WiFi localization system for indoors

Muchas de estas aplicaciones hacen uso de las capacidades de localización de estos dispositivos. Para poder proporcionar su localización, es necesario identificar la posición del usuario de forma robusta y en tiempo real. Tradicionalmente, esta localización se ha realizado mediante el uso del GPS que proporciona posicionamiento preciso en exteriores. Desafortunadamente, su baja precisión en interiores imposibilita su uso. Para proporcionar localización en interiores se utilizan diferentes tecnologías. Entre ellas, la tecnología WiFi es una de las más usadas debido a sus importantes ventajas tales como la disponibilidad de puntos de acceso WiFi en la mayoría de edificios y que medir la señal WiFi no tiene coste, incluso en redes privadas. Desafortunadamente, también tiene algunas desventajas, ya que en interiores la señal es altamente dependiente de la estructura del edificio por lo que aparecen otros efectos no deseados, como el efecto multicamino o las variaciones de pequeña escala. Además, las redes WiFi están instaladas para maximizar la conectividad sin tener en cuenta su posible uso para localización, por lo que los entornos suelen estar altamente poblados de puntos de acceso, aumentando las interferencias co-canal, que causan variaciones en el nivel de señal recibido. El objetivo de esta tesis es la localización de dispositivos móviles en interiores utilizando como única información el nivel de señal recibido de los puntos de acceso existentes en el entorno. La meta final es desarrollar un sistema de localización WiFi para dispositivos móviles, que pueda ser utilizado en cualquier entorno y por cualquier dispositivo, en tiempo real. Para alcanzar este objetivo, se propone un sistema de localización jerárquico basado en clasificadores borrosos que realizará la localización en entornos descritos topológicamente. Este sistema proporcionará una localización robusta en diferentes escenarios, prestando especial atención a los entornos grandes. Para ello, el sistema diseñado crea una partición jerárquica del entorno usando K-Means. Después, el sistema de localización se entrena utilizando diferentes algoritmos de clasificación supervisada para localizar las nuevas medidas WiFi. Finalmente, se ha diseñado un sistema probabilístico para seguir la posición del dispositivo en movimiento utilizando un filtro Bayesiano. Este sistema se ha probado en un entorno real, con varias plantas, obteniendo un error medio total por debajo de los 3 metros
Collaborative autonomy in heterogeneous multi-robot systems
As autonomous mobile robots become increasingly connected and widely deployed in different domains, managing multiple robots and their interaction is key to the future of ubiquitous autonomous systems. Indeed, robots are not individual entities anymore. Instead, many robots today are deployed as part of larger fleets or in teams. The benefits of multirobot collaboration, specially in heterogeneous groups, are multiple. Significantly higher degrees of situational awareness and understanding of their environment can be achieved when robots with different operational capabilities are deployed together. Examples of this include the Perseverance rover and the Ingenuity helicopter that NASA has deployed in Mars, or the highly heterogeneous robot teams that explored caves and other complex environments during the last DARPA Sub-T competition.
This thesis delves into the wide topic of collaborative autonomy in multi-robot systems, encompassing some of the key elements required for achieving robust collaboration: solving collaborative decision-making problems; securing their operation, management and interaction; providing means for autonomous coordination in space and accurate global or relative state estimation; and achieving collaborative situational awareness through distributed perception and cooperative planning. The thesis covers novel formation control algorithms, and new ways to achieve accurate absolute or relative localization within multi-robot systems. It also explores the potential of distributed ledger technologies as an underlying framework to achieve collaborative decision-making in distributed robotic systems.
Throughout the thesis, I introduce novel approaches to utilizing cryptographic elements and blockchain technology for securing the operation of autonomous robots, showing that sensor data and mission instructions can be validated in an end-to-end manner. I then shift the focus to localization and coordination, studying ultra-wideband (UWB) radios and their potential. I show how UWB-based ranging and localization can enable aerial robots to operate in GNSS-denied environments, with a study of the constraints and limitations. I also study the potential of UWB-based relative localization between aerial and ground robots for more accurate positioning in areas where GNSS signals degrade. In terms of coordination, I introduce two new algorithms for formation control that require zero to minimal communication, if enough degree of awareness of neighbor robots is available. These algorithms are validated in simulation and real-world experiments. The thesis concludes with the integration of a new approach to cooperative path planning algorithms and UWB-based relative localization for dense scene reconstruction using lidar and vision sensors in ground and aerial robots
Cooperative Vehicle Perception and Localization Using Infrastructure-based Sensor Nodes
Reliable and accurate Perception and Localization (PL) are necessary for safe intelligent transportation
systems. The current vehicle-based PL techniques in autonomous vehicles are vulnerable to occlusion
and cluttering, especially in busy urban driving causing safety concerns. In order to avoid such safety
issues, researchers study infrastructure-based PL techniques to augment vehicle sensory systems.
Infrastructure-based PL methods rely on sensor nodes that each could include camera(s), Lidar(s),
radar(s), and computation and communication units for processing and transmitting the data. Vehicle
to Infrastructure (V2I) communication is used to access the sensor node processed data to be fused with
the onboard sensor data.
In infrastructure-based PL, signal-based techniques- in which sensors like Lidar are used- can provide
accurate positioning information while vision-based techniques can be used for classification.
Therefore, in order to take advantage of both approaches, cameras are cooperatively used with Lidar in
the infrastructure sensor node (ISN) in this thesis. ISNs have a wider field of view (FOV) and are less
likely to suffer from occlusion. Besides, they can provide more accurate measurements since they are
fixed at a known location. As such, the fusion of both onboard and ISN data has the potential to improve
the overall PL accuracy and reliability.
This thesis presents a framework for cooperative PL in autonomous vehicles (AVs) by fusing ISN
data with onboard sensor data. The ISN includes cameras and Lidar sensors, and the proposed camera Lidar fusion method combines the sensor node information with vehicle motion models and kinematic
constraints to improve the performance of PL. One of the main goals of this thesis is to develop a wind induced motion compensation module to address the problem of time-varying extrinsic parameters of
the ISNs. The proposed module compensates for the effect of the motion of ISN posts due to wind or
other external disturbances. To address this issue, an unknown input observer is developed that uses
the motion model of the light post as well as the sensor data.
The outputs of the ISN, the positions of all objects in the FOV, are then broadcast so that autonomous
vehicles can access the information via V2I connectivity to fuse with their onboard sensory data through
the proposed cooperative PL framework. In the developed framework, a KCF is implemented as a
distributed fusion method to fuse ISN data with onboard data. The introduced cooperative PL
incorporates the range-dependent accuracy of the ISN measurements into fusion to improve the overall
PL accuracy and reliability in different scenarios. The results show that using ISN data in addition to onboard sensor data improves the performance and reliability of PL in different scenarios, specifically
in occlusion cases
Laser-Based Detection and Tracking of Moving Obstacles to Improve Perception of Unmanned Ground Vehicles
El objetivo de esta tesis es desarrollar un sistema que mejore la etapa de percepción de vehículos terrestres no tripulados (UGVs) heterogéneos, consiguiendo con ello una navegación robusta en términos de seguridad y ahorro energético en diferentes entornos reales, tanto interiores como exteriores. La percepción debe tratar con obstáculos estáticos y dinámicos empleando sensores heterogéneos, tales como, odometría, sensor de distancia láser (LIDAR), unidad de medida inercial (IMU) y sistema de posicionamiento global (GPS), para obtener la información del entorno con la precisión más alta, permitiendo mejorar las etapas de planificación y evitación de obstáculos.
Para conseguir este objetivo, se propone una etapa de mapeado de obstáculos dinámicos (DOMap) que contiene la información de los obstáculos estáticos y dinámicos. La propuesta se basa en una extensión del filtro de ocupación bayesiana (BOF) incluyendo velocidades no discretizadas. La detección de velocidades se obtiene con Flujo Óptico sobre una rejilla de medidas LIDAR discretizadas. Además, se gestionan las oclusiones entre obstáculos y se añade una etapa de seguimiento multi-hipótesis, mejorando la robustez de la propuesta (iDOMap).
La propuesta ha sido probada en entornos simulados y reales con diferentes plataformas robóticas, incluyendo plataformas comerciales y la plataforma (PROPINA) desarrollada en esta tesis para mejorar la colaboración entre equipos de humanos y robots dentro del proyecto ABSYNTHE. Finalmente, se han propuesto métodos para calibrar la posición del LIDAR y mejorar la odometría con una IMU
Vision-based Learning for Drones: A Survey
Drones as advanced cyber-physical systems are undergoing a transformative
shift with the advent of vision-based learning, a field that is rapidly gaining
prominence due to its profound impact on drone autonomy and functionality.
Different from existing task-specific surveys, this review offers a
comprehensive overview of vision-based learning in drones, emphasizing its
pivotal role in enhancing their operational capabilities under various
scenarios. We start by elucidating the fundamental principles of vision-based
learning, highlighting how it significantly improves drones' visual perception
and decision-making processes. We then categorize vision-based control methods
into indirect, semi-direct, and end-to-end approaches from the
perception-control perspective. We further explore various applications of
vision-based drones with learning capabilities, ranging from single-agent
systems to more complex multi-agent and heterogeneous system scenarios, and
underscore the challenges and innovations characterizing each area. Finally, we
explore open questions and potential solutions, paving the way for ongoing
research and development in this dynamic and rapidly evolving field. With
growing large language models (LLMs) and embodied intelligence, vision-based
learning for drones provides a promising but challenging road towards
artificial general intelligence (AGI) in 3D physical world
