    Mesh-based video coding for low bit-rate communications

    In this paper, a new method for low bit-rate content-adaptive mesh-based video coding is proposed. Intra-frame coding of this method employs feature map extraction for node distribution at specific threshold levels to achieve higher density placement of initial nodes for regions that contain high frequency features and conversely sparse placement of initial nodes for smooth regions. Insignificant nodes are largely removed using a subsequent node elimination scheme. The Hilbert scan is then applied before quantization and entropy coding to reduce amount of transmitted information. For moving images, both node position and color parameters of only a subset of nodes may change from frame to frame. It is sufficient to transmit only these changed parameters. The proposed method is well-suited for video coding at very low bit rates, as processing results demonstrate that it provides good subjective and objective image quality at a lower number of required bits

    Segmentation-based mesh design for motion estimation

    Dans la plupart des codec vidéo standard, l'estimation des mouvements entre deux images se fait généralement par l'algorithme de concordance des blocs ou encore BMA pour « Block Matching Algorithm ». BMA permet de représenter l'évolution du contenu des images en décomposant normalement une image par blocs 2D en mouvement translationnel. Cette technique de prédiction conduit habituellement à de sévères distorsions de 1'artefact de bloc lorsque Ie mouvement est important. De plus, la décomposition systématique en blocs réguliers ne dent pas compte nullement du contenu de l'image. Certains paramètres associes aux blocs, mais inutiles, doivent être transmis; ce qui résulte d'une augmentation de débit de transmission. Pour paillier a ces défauts de BMA, on considère les deux objectifs importants dans Ie codage vidéo, qui sont de recevoir une bonne qualité d'une part et de réduire la transmission a très bas débit d'autre part. Dans Ie but de combiner les deux exigences quasi contradictoires, il est nécessaire d'utiliser une technique de compensation de mouvement qui donne, comme transformation, de bonnes caractéristiques subjectives et requiert uniquement, pour la transmission, l'information de mouvement. Ce mémoire propose une technique de compensation de mouvement en concevant des mailles 2D triangulaires a partir d'une segmentation de l'image. La décomposition des mailles est construite a partir des nœuds repartis irrégulièrement Ie long des contours dans l'image. La décomposition résultant est ainsi basée sur Ie contenu de l'image. De plus, étant donné la même méthode de sélection des nœuds appliquée à l'encodage et au décodage, la seule information requise est leurs vecteurs de mouvement et un très bas débit de transmission peut ainsi être réalise. Notre approche, comparée avec BMA, améliore à la fois la qualité subjective et objective avec beaucoup moins d'informations de mouvement. Dans la premier chapitre, une introduction au projet sera présentée. Dans Ie deuxième chapitre, on analysera quelques techniques de compression dans les codec standard et, surtout, la populaire BMA et ses défauts. Dans Ie troisième chapitre, notre algorithme propose et appelé la conception active des mailles a base de segmentation, sera discute en détail. Ensuite, les estimation et compensation de mouvement seront décrites dans Ie chapitre 4. Finalement, au chapitre 5, les résultats de simulation et la conclusion seront présentés.Abstract: In most video compression standards today, the generally accepted method for temporal prediction is motion compensation using block matching algorithm (BMA). BMA represents the scene content evolution with 2-D rigid translational moving blocks. This kind of predictive scheme usually leads to distortions such as block artefacts especially when the motion is important. The two most important aims in video coding are to receive a good quality on one hand and a low bit-rate on the other. This thesis proposes a motion compensation scheme using segmentation-based 2-D triangular mesh design method. The mesh is constructed by irregularly spread nodal points selected along image contour. Based on this, the generated mesh is, to a great extent, image content based. Moreover, the nodes are selected with the same method on the encoder and decoder sides, so that the only information that has to be transmitted are their motion vectors, and thus very low bit-rate can be achieved.     Chaste: an open source C++ library for computational physiology and biology

    Chaste - Cancer, Heart And Soft Tissue Environment - is an open source C++ library for the computational simulation of mathematical models developed for physiology and biology. Code development has been driven by two initial applications: cardiac electrophysiology and cancer development. A large number of cardiac electrophysiology studies have been enabled and performed, including high performance computational investigations of defibrillation on realistic human cardiac geometries. New models for the initiation and growth of tumours have been developed. In particular, cell-based simulations have provided novel insight into the role of stem cells in the colorectal crypt. Chaste is constantly evolving and is now being applied to a far wider range of problems. The code provides modules for handling common scientific computing components, such as meshes and solvers for ordinary and partial differential equations (ODEs/PDEs). Re-use of these components avoids the need for researchers to "re-invent the wheel" with each new project, accelerating the rate of progress in new applications. Chaste is developed using industrially-derived techniques, in particular test-driven development, to ensure code quality, re-use and reliability. In this article we provide examples that illustrate the types of problems Chaste can be used to solve, which can be run on a desktop computer. We highlight some scientific studies that have used or are using Chaste, and the insights they have provided.     A framework for realistic 3D tele-immersion

    Meeting, socializing and conversing online with a group of people using teleconferencing systems is still quite differ- ent from the experience of meeting face to face. We are abruptly aware that we are online and that the people we are engaging with are not in close proximity. Analogous to how talking on the telephone does not replicate the experi- ence of talking in person. Several causes for these differences have been identified and we propose inspiring and innova- tive solutions to these hurdles in attempt to provide a more realistic, believable and engaging online conversational expe- rience. We present the distributed and scalable framework REVERIE that provides a balanced mix of these solutions. Applications build on top of the REVERIE framework will be able to provide interactive, immersive, photo-realistic ex- periences to a multitude of users that for them will feel much more similar to having face to face meetings than the expe- rience offered by conventional teleconferencing systems

    Radial Basis Functions: Biomedical Applications and Parallelization

    Radial basis function (RBF) is a real-valued function whose values depend only on the distances between an interpolation point and a set of user-specified points called centers. RBF interpolation is one of the primary methods to reconstruct functions from multi-dimensional scattered data. Its abilities to generalize arbitrary space dimensions and to provide spectral accuracy have made it particularly popular in different application areas, including but not limited to: finding numerical solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs), image processing, computer vision and graphics, deep learning and neural networks, etc. The present thesis discusses three applications of RBF interpolation in biomedical engineering areas: (1) Calcium dynamics modeling, in which we numerically solve a set of PDEs by using meshless numerical methods and RBF-based interpolation techniques; (2) Image restoration and transformation, where an image is restored from its triangular mesh representation or transformed under translation, rotation, and scaling, etc. from its original form; (3) Porous structure design, in which the RBF interpolation used to reconstruct a 3D volume containing porous structures from a set of regularly or randomly placed points inside a user-provided surface shape. All these three applications have been investigated and their effectiveness has been supported with numerous experimental results. In particular, we innovatively utilize anisotropic distance metrics to define the distance in RBF interpolation and apply them to the aforementioned second and third applications, which show significant improvement in preserving image features or capturing connected porous structures over the isotropic distance-based RBF method. Beside the algorithm designs and their applications in biomedical areas, we also explore several common parallelization techniques (including OpenMP and CUDA-based GPU programming) to accelerate the performance of the present algorithms. In particular, we analyze how parallel programming can help RBF interpolation to speed up the meshless PDE solver as well as image processing. While RBF has been widely used in various science and engineering fields, the current thesis is expected to trigger some more interest from computational scientists or students into this fast-growing area and specifically apply these techniques to biomedical problems such as the ones investigated in the present work

    Cross-layer Optimized Wireless Video Surveillance

    A wireless video surveillance system contains three major components, the video capture and preprocessing, the video compression and transmission over wireless sensor networks (WSNs), and the video analysis at the receiving end. The coordination of different components is important for improving the end-to-end video quality, especially under the communication resource constraint. Cross-layer control proves to be an efficient measure for optimal system configuration. In this dissertation, we address the problem of implementing cross-layer optimization in the wireless video surveillance system. The thesis work is based on three research projects. In the first project, a single PTU (pan-tilt-unit) camera is used for video object tracking. The problem studied is how to improve the quality of the received video by jointly considering the coding and transmission process. The cross-layer controller determines the optimal coding and transmission parameters, according to the dynamic channel condition and the transmission delay. Multiple error concealment strategies are developed utilizing the special property of the PTU camera motion. In the second project, the binocular PTU camera is adopted for video object tracking. The presented work studied the fast disparity estimation algorithm and the 3D video transcoding over the WSN for real-time applications. The disparity/depth information is estimated in a coarse-to-fine manner using both local and global methods. The transcoding is coordinated by the cross-layer controller based on the channel condition and the data rate constraint, in order to achieve the best view synthesis quality. The third project is applied for multi-camera motion capture in remote healthcare monitoring. The challenge is the resource allocation for multiple video sequences. The presented cross-layer design incorporates the delay sensitive, content-aware video coding and transmission, and the adaptive video coding and transmission to ensure the optimal and balanced quality for the multi-view videos. In these projects, interdisciplinary study is conducted to synergize the surveillance system under the cross-layer optimization framework. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed schemes. The challenges of cross-layer design in existing wireless video surveillance systems are also analyzed to enlighten the future work. Adviser: Song C

    3D exemplar-based image inpainting in electron microscopy

    In electron microscopy (EM) a common problem is the non-availability of data, which causes artefacts in reconstructions. In this thesis the goal is to generate artificial data where missing in EM by using exemplar-based inpainting (EBI). We implement an accelerated 3D version tailored to applications in EM, which reduces reconstruction times from days to minutes. We develop intelligent sampling strategies to find optimal data as input for reconstruction methods. Further, we investigate approaches to reduce electron dose and acquisition time. Sparse sampling followed by inpainting is the most promising approach. As common evaluation measures may lead to misinterpretation of results in EM and falsify a subsequent analysis, we propose to use application driven metrics and demonstrate this in a segmentation task. A further application of our technique is the artificial generation of projections in tiltbased EM. EBI is used to generate missing projections, such that the full angular range is covered. Subsequent reconstructions are significantly enhanced in terms of resolution, which facilitates further analysis of samples. In conclusion, EBI proves promising when used as an additional data generation step to tackle the non-availability of data in EM, which is evaluated in selected applications. Enhancing adaptive sampling methods and refining EBI, especially considering the mutual influence, promotes higher throughput in EM using less electron dose while not lessening quality.Ein häufig vorkommendes Problem in der Elektronenmikroskopie (EM) ist die Nichtverfügbarkeit von Daten, was zu Artefakten in Rekonstruktionen führt. In dieser Arbeit ist es das Ziel fehlende Daten in der EM künstlich zu erzeugen, was durch Exemplar-basiertes Inpainting (EBI) realisiert wird. Wir implementieren eine auf EM zugeschnittene beschleunigte 3D Version, welche es ermöglicht, Rekonstruktionszeiten von Tagen auf Minuten zu reduzieren. Wir entwickeln intelligente Abtaststrategien, um optimale Datenpunkte für die Rekonstruktion zu erhalten. Ansätze zur Reduzierung von Elektronendosis und Aufnahmezeit werden untersucht. Unterabtastung gefolgt von Inpainting führt zu den besten Resultaten. Evaluationsmaße zur Beurteilung der Rekonstruktionsqualität helfen in der EM oft nicht und können zu falschen Schlüssen führen, weswegen anwendungsbasierte Metriken die bessere Wahl darstellen. Dies demonstrieren wir anhand eines Beispiels. Die künstliche Erzeugung von Projektionen in der neigungsbasierten Elektronentomographie ist eine weitere Anwendung. EBI wird verwendet um fehlende Projektionen zu generieren. Daraus resultierende Rekonstruktionen weisen eine deutlich erhöhte Auflösung auf. EBI ist ein vielversprechender Ansatz, um nicht verfügbare Daten in der EM zu generieren. Dies wird auf Basis verschiedener Anwendungen gezeigt und evaluiert. Adaptive Aufnahmestrategien und EBI können also zu einem höheren Durchsatz in der EM führen, ohne die Bildqualität merklich zu verschlechtern
