    Air Traffic Management Abbreviation Compendium

    Get PDF
As in all fields of work, an unmanageable number of abbreviations are used today in aviation for terms, definitions, commands, standards and technical descriptions. This applies in general to the areas of aeronautical communication, navigation and surveillance, cockpit and air traffic control working positions, passenger and cargo transport, and all other areas of flight planning, organization and guidance. In addition, many abbreviations are used more than once or have different meanings in different languages. In order to obtain an overview of the most common abbreviations used in air traffic management, organizations like EUROCONTROL, FAA, DWD and DLR have published lists of abbreviations in the past, which have also been enclosed in this document. In addition, abbreviations from some larger international projects related to aviation have been included to provide users with a directory as complete as possible. This means that the second edition of the Air Traffic Management Abbreviation Compendium includes now around 16,500 abbreviations and acronyms from the field of aviation

In recent years, we have witnessed the huge use of the Internet Protocol for delivering multimedia trafic. Developments in broadband networks led the progress in multimedia applications such as voice over IP, video streaming or real-time videos. However, the stochastic nature of the networks, in particular mobile networks, make it difficult to maintain a good quality at all times. The research of this PhD thesis deals with the improvement of the quality of service (QoS) for this kind of applications. Current network protocols provide multiple QoS control mechanism. Congestion control and transmission delay optimization are provided by packet scheduling strategies and bandwidth planning. Moreover, flow control adjusts the mismatch between the video server rate and the receiver available bandwidth. Nevertheless, video applications, in particular interactive videos, are very sensitive to delay variation, commonly called jitter. Indeed, the customers’ perceived video quality depends on it. A jitter increase may cause a large video start-up delay, video interruptions and a decrease of image quality. The main objective of this thesis is the study of jitter, which is not much studied in the IP literature. We also examine the impact of the increase of this parameter on video transmission. However, beyond the difficulties of modeling traffic and network, this major objective raises many other issues. How to calculate jitter analytically for traffic models with general distributions? Are the proposed models sufficiently simple and easy to calculate? How to integrate these new formalizations into performance monitoring? How can the analytical estimate minimize the traffic control packets exchange for each video connection? We first explore the jitter calculation in queues with traffic other than Poisson traffic, that was widely used to model Internet traffic because of its simplicity. The idea is to compute jitter with the same formula for the Poisson traffic case, but with other distributions. For this, we need some approximations and assumptions when the analytical characterization of the transit time is not possible. We adopt simulations to validate the approximate models. The set of simulations shows that the average jitter calculated by our model and by simulation coincide within an appropriate confidence intervals. Moreover, the execution time to evaluate jitter is small, which facilitates the use of the proposed formulas in control tools and in optimization models. We then study the possibility of exploiting this analytical results to control jitter buffers, an important component in the video transmission. We find that it is possible to evaluate its performances analytically by estimating jitter inside this type of buffer

A QoS model for highly variable mobile networks

The goal of a reservation-based QoS system is to guarantee specific transmission parameters to data flows especially in a resource-constrained environment. To do so, it has to balance different requests and find a resource allocation maximizing the overall value to its users. Traditionally there is an information gap in this optimization process: The network layer operates on individual data flows, whereas higher layers bind multiple flows together to form more complex connections. Without being aware of these relationships introduced on higher layers, the network layer may assign transmission resources to reservations, while not guaranteeing other, additionally required reservations. The result is a sub-optimal allocation, which wastes resources that could ultimately be used to better satisfy users in an already quite strained environment. This work proposes to make the network layer aware of higher-layer relationships by modeling them as propositional formulas over the resource allocation. Each reservation is represented by a Boolean variable giving its current resource assignment state. By deriving the resulting value of each propositional formula the optimization process can detect - and ultimately eliminate - wasted resources. The optimization problem is an instance of the Knapsack problem with additional Boolean constraints. By transforming it into a Mixed Integer Linear Program existing optimization algorithms like Branch-and-Cut can be used to find optimal solutions in a reasonable time frame. The results of this work indicate that, depending on the scenario, up to 75% of assigned resources may be wasted in a relation-unaware system. Alleviating this problem yields a dramatic increase of the number of admitted application sessions. Together with proactive resource management, where reservations can be suspended and resumed by the network, this approach is especially suited for highly variable, long delay networks. It is able to autonomously find the optimal resource distribution, without putting additional signaling burden on already limited resources

Priority-Aware Packet Pre-marking for DiffServ Architecture Based on H.264/SVC Video Stream Structure

    Get PDF
The H264/SVC codec allows for generation of hierarchical video streams. In the stream of this type video data belonging to different layers have different priority depending on their importance to the quality of the video and the decoding process. This creates new demands on the mechanisms of packet marking, and thus new challenges for the policy guaranteeing QoS parameters, such as those defined in the DiffServ architecture. Therefore, mechanisms of the traffic engineering used in the DiffServ network should, as far as possible, take into account internal distribution of priorities inside video streams. This may be achieved by implementing an appropriate method for packet pre-marking. The paper describes the Weighted Priority Pre-marking (WPP) algorithm for priority-aware SVC video streaming over a DiffServ network. Our solution takes into account the relative importance of the Network Abstraction Layer Units. It also does not require any changes in the implementation of the DiffServ marker algorithm. The results presented confirm that video transmission in the DiffServ domain, based on the WPP packet pre-marking, can provide better perceived video quality than the standard (best effort) streaming of multi-layered SVC video. In addition, a comparison with the transmission of the same video content encoded with the H264/AVC codec also points to the superiority of our proposed method. Document type: Articl

This PhD thesis is focused on the question: how can an autonomously working routing management be designed to allow the transmission of application data while considering quality requirements. To answer this the focus is on a dynamic routing, whose decisions depend on the current distribution of available link capacities in the network. The presented new solution contains three protocols which work in a completely autonomous way. They are used to cluster the network and place automatically management instances, to assign addresses in the network as well as to distribute continuously routing data among the network nodes. Based on this, all routing tables are kept up to date, so that they represent the current paths as well as they also describe the available QoS specific capacity for each known route. By the help of this data, the routing algorithm, which is applied in this PhD thesis, allows the transmission of data from different applications while considering their quality requirements. In this context, each needed routing decision is influenced by the currently existing load situation in the network.Despite the introduced complex signaling, the overall system remains compatible to IPv4/v6. Therefore, it can be used for the transmission of audiovisual data in today’s networks. In such a scenario the scalability of the resulting overall system is supported by the data aggregations which are used within the signaling of the routing management. The practical part of the work is divided into two areas. The first one describes the software “Homer Conferencing”. It is usable as standalone solution for video conferences and test environment for audiovisual streams. By its help, qualitative differences in transmissions can be presented. Additionally, the software provides graphical dialogs for quantitative measurements of the data streams and packet losses. The second practical part contains the implementation of the routing management and applies all protocols on packet level. This was used as base for the accomplished quantitative evaluations. They show the caused signaling overhead as well as the resulting benefit of the introduced routing management for selected base topologies of IP networks.
