    Web Acceptance and Usage Model: A Comparison between Goal-directed and Experiential Web Users

    In this paper we analyse the Web acceptance and usage between goal-directed users and experiential users, incorporating intrinsic motives to improve the particular and explanatory TAM value –traditionally related to extrinsic motives-. A field study was conducted to validate measures used to operationalize model variables and to test the hypothesised network of relationships. The data analysis method used was Partial Least Squares (PLS).The empirical results provided strong support for the hypotheses, highlighting the roles of flow, ease of use and usefulness in determining the actual use of the Web among experiential and goal-directed users. In contrast with previous research that suggests that flow would be more likely to occur during experiential activities than goal-directed activities, we found clear evidence of flow for goal-directed activities. In particular the study findings indicate that flow might play a powerfulrole in determining the attitude towards usage,intention to useand, in turn,actual Web use among experiential and goal-directed users

    Validity of the technology acceptance model (TAM) : A sensemaking perspective

    This study investigates whether sensemaking activities influence technology acceptance and if the strength of relationship between TAM’s constructs changes over a period of time. This study was a panel-based longitudinal study, whereby data was collected in three stages within a single semester. The setting of the study was at the School of Management, USM. The major findings of the study showed that sensemaking does influence the TAM if activities are undertaken at high and low levels and also sensemaking influences individual constructs of TAM rather than the whole model. This study failed to prove that there is a significant change in the strength of relationship between TAM constructs over a period of time under sensemaking influence, which is that sensemaking activities were found not to exhibit any moderation effect on the TAM constructs. Sensemaking acts as an external variable which influences TAM rather than moderate the strength of the relationship between TAM constructs. This could be because the technology in question was mandatory to be used by the subjects rather than voluntary. Implications for managers are discussed

    The motivational aspect: The low and high proficiency undergraduates of Islamic University College of Malaysia (IUCM) in using tell me more (TMM) language learning software

    Many learners are excited to use language learning software when the software is introduced. However, it is believed that, the low proficiency users are less motivated compared to high proficiency users. This study compares the motivational level of low and high proficiency undergraduates of IUCM in using TMM language learning software. The data was collected by administering the modified Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS) questionnaire (Keller, 1987) to the respondents and analyzed using SPSS software to arrive at the statistical figures. The analysis shows that there are not many discrepancies in terms of the motivational level between the two groups in using the software, thus indicating the strengths of the software in catering for both groups. However, there are also some weaknesses in the software that will be addressed in this paper. Finally, possible modifications to TMM software pertaining to the features related to the ARCS model (Keller, 1987) will also be put forth

    Effect of user experience on technology acceptance: the case of foss

    Free and open source software (FOSS) movement essentially arises like answer to the evolution occurred in the market from the software, characterized by the closing of the source code. Furthermore, some FOSS characteristics, such as (1) the advance of this movement and (2) the attractiveness that contributes the voluntary and cooperative work, have increased the interest of the users towards free software. Traditionally, research in FOSS has focused on identifying individual personal motives for participating in the development of a FOSS project, analyzing specific FOSS solutions, or the FOSS movement itself. Nevertheless, the advantages of the FOSS for users and the effect of the demographic dimensions on user acceptance for FOSS have been two research topics with little attention. Specifically, this paper’s aim is to focus on the influence of the user experience with FOSS the FOSS acceptance. Based on the literature, user experience is an essential demographic dimension for explaining the Information Systems acceptance. With this purpose, the authors have developed a research model based on the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM).El movimiento asociado al software de código abierto (FOSS) surge como una respuesta a la evolución acontecida en el mercado del software, caracterizado por el cierre del código fuente. Además, algunas características del FOSS como (1) el avance de este movimiento y (2) el atractivo que suscita debido a que se construye bajo la filosofía de trabajo voluntario y cooperativo, ha incrementado el interés de los usuarios hacia FOSS. Tradicionalmente las investigaciones en FOSS han estado centradas en identificar las motivaciones personales de participar en el desarrollo de un proyecto FOSS. Mientras que las ventajas del FOSS para los usuarios y el efecto de las dimensiones demográficas en la aceptación de FOSS han sido dos tópicos de investigación con poca atención. Concretamente, este artículo se centra en analizar la influencia de la experiencia con FOSS en la propia aceptación de FOSS. Basado en la literatura, la experiencia del usuario es una dimensión demográfica esencial para explicar la aceptación de los Sistemas de Información.     User Satisfaction in the Internet-Anchored Workplace: An Exploration Study

    Empirical research on the impact of the Internet on work life is in its infancy. We report the results of an empirical study of the relationships among user satisfaction, job satisfaction changes, user’s behavior (training, experience, and system usage) and demographics (age, gender, and organizational position) in the Internet-anchored workplace. Respondents who report higher levels of user satisfaction with the Internet also report that the Internet has increased their satisfaction with their jobs. Those who report more training, experience and usage and are younger also report higher levels of user satisfaction. Interestingly, there are no differences in user satisfaction reported by men and women. Respondents report more positive changes in job satisfaction with higher levels of Internet experience and time of use. Based on the results recommendations are made for managers and suggestions for future research are given

    Causal Relationships between Perceived Enjoyment and Perceived Ease of Use: An Alternative Approach

    Identifying causal relationships is an important aspect of scientific inquiry. Causal relationships help us to infer, predict, and plan. This research investigates the causal relationships between two constructs, perceived enjoyment (PE) and perceived ease of use (PEOU), within the nomological net of user technology acceptance. PE has been theorized and empirically validated as either an antecedent or a consequence of PEOU. We believe that there are two reasons that account for this ambiguity the conceptual coupling of PE and PEOU and the limitations of covariance-based statistical methods. Accordingly, we approach this inconsistency by providing more theoretical reasoning and employing an alternative statistical method, namely Cohen\u27s path analysis. Specifically, as suggested by previous research on the difference between utilitarian and hedonic systems, we propose the conditional dominance of causal directions. Empirical results from two studies using different technologies and user samples support the theoretical claim that the PE?PEOU causal direction outweighs the PEOU?PE direction for utilitarian systems. There are both theoretical and the methodical contributions of this research. The approach applied in this research can be generalized to study causal relationships between conceptually coupled variables, which otherwise may be overlooked by confirmatory methods. We encourage researchers to pay attention to causal directions in addition to causal connectedness

    Determining the Antecedents to Use Intention in the Area of Telecommunication-Broadcasting Convergence

    The convergence of telecommunication and broadcasting is one of the representative innovative technologies in digital environment. It has recently been empathized as an alternative solution to overcome already saturated telecommunication and broadcasting markets. However, the growth of related service and market cannot reach prior expectation due to the lack of understanding on the real users. Telecommunication technologies support users’ instrumental purpose and broadcasting services usually serve their entertainment activities, which have an inherent value. Our research question is which factors influence users’ attitude and decision making in the use of convergence services in the area of telecommunication and broadcasting. To access the determinants, we propose hedonic and utilitarian values as intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, and perceived control as internal and external conditions. To verify our model empirically, we have selected the DMB technology, a good example for the distinctive convergence service of telecommunication and broadcasting. In order for the DMB service to differentiate itself from the existing media and create unique benefits as a business model, service providers must develop individually customized contents based on each user’s context information and life style and deliver them with the format meeting their hedonic needs and demands
