Multi-camera Realtime 3D Tracking of Multiple Flying Animals
Automated tracking of animal movement allows analyses that would not
otherwise be possible by providing great quantities of data. The additional
capability of tracking in realtime - with minimal latency - opens up the
experimental possibility of manipulating sensory feedback, thus allowing
detailed explorations of the neural basis for control of behavior. Here we
describe a new system capable of tracking the position and body orientation of
animals such as flies and birds. The system operates with less than 40 msec
latency and can track multiple animals simultaneously. To achieve these
results, a multi target tracking algorithm was developed based on the Extended
Kalman Filter and the Nearest Neighbor Standard Filter data association
algorithm. In one implementation, an eleven camera system is capable of
tracking three flies simultaneously at 60 frames per second using a gigabit
network of nine standard Intel Pentium 4 and Core 2 Duo computers. This
manuscript presents the rationale and details of the algorithms employed and
shows three implementations of the system. An experiment was performed using
the tracking system to measure the effect of visual contrast on the flight
speed of Drosophila melanogaster. At low contrasts, speed is more variable and
faster on average than at high contrasts. Thus, the system is already a useful
tool to study the neurobiology and behavior of freely flying animals. If
combined with other techniques, such as `virtual reality'-type computer
graphics or genetic manipulation, the tracking system would offer a powerful

FlightGoggles: A Modular Framework for Photorealistic Camera, Exteroceptive Sensor, and Dynamics Simulation
FlightGoggles is a photorealistic sensor simulator for perception-driven
robotic vehicles. The key contributions of FlightGoggles are twofold. First,
FlightGoggles provides photorealistic exteroceptive sensor simulation using
graphics assets generated with photogrammetry. Second, it provides the ability
to combine (i) synthetic exteroceptive measurements generated in silico in real
time and (ii) vehicle dynamics and proprioceptive measurements generated in
motio by vehicle(s) in a motion-capture facility. FlightGoggles is capable of
simulating a virtual-reality environment around autonomous vehicle(s). While a
vehicle is in flight in the FlightGoggles virtual reality environment,
exteroceptive sensors are rendered synthetically in real time while all complex
extrinsic dynamics are generated organically through the natural interactions
of the vehicle. The FlightGoggles framework allows for researchers to
accelerate development by circumventing the need to estimate complex and
hard-to-model interactions such as aerodynamics, motor mechanics, battery
electrochemistry, and behavior of other agents. The ability to perform
vehicle-in-the-loop experiments with photorealistic exteroceptive sensor
simulation facilitates novel research directions involving, e.g., fast and
agile autonomous flight in obstacle-rich environments, safe human interaction,
and flexible sensor selection. FlightGoggles has been utilized as the main test
for selecting nine teams that will advance in the AlphaPilot autonomous drone
racing challenge. We survey approaches and results from the top AlphaPilot

The World of Fast Moving Objects
The notion of a Fast Moving Object (FMO), i.e. an object that moves over a
distance exceeding its size within the exposure time, is introduced. FMOs may,
and typically do, rotate with high angular speed. FMOs are very common in
sports videos, but are not rare elsewhere. In a single frame, such objects are
often barely visible and appear as semi-transparent streaks.
A method for the detection and tracking of FMOs is proposed. The method
consists of three distinct algorithms, which form an efficient localization
pipeline that operates successfully in a broad range of conditions. We show
that it is possible to recover the appearance of the object and its axis of
rotation, despite its blurred appearance. The proposed method is evaluated on a
new annotated dataset. The results show that existing trackers are inadequate
for the problem of FMO localization and a new approach is required. Two
applications of localization, temporal super-resolution and highlighting, are
presented
A machine learning approach to pedestrian detection for autonomous vehicles using High-Definition 3D Range Data
This article describes an automated sensor-based system to detect pedestrians in an autonomous vehicle application. Although the vehicle is equipped with a broad set of sensors, the article focuses on the processing of the information generated by a Velodyne HDL-64E LIDAR sensor. The cloud of points generated by the sensor (more than 1 million points per revolution) is processed to detect pedestrians, by selecting cubic shapes and applying machine vision and machine learning algorithms to the XY, XZ, and YZ projections of the points contained in the cube. The work relates an exhaustive analysis of the performance of three different machine learning algorithms: k-Nearest Neighbours (kNN), Naïve Bayes classifier (NBC), and Support Vector Machine (SVM). These algorithms have been trained with 1931 samples. The final performance of the method, measured a real traffic scenery, which contained 16 pedestrians and 469 samples of non-pedestrians, shows sensitivity (81.2%), accuracy (96.2%) and specificity (96.8%).This work was partially supported by ViSelTR (ref. Vision technology/algorithms for space robotics applications
The thrust of automation and robotics for space applications has been proposed for increased productivity, improved reliability, increased flexibility, higher safety, and for the performance of automating time-consuming tasks, increasing productivity/performance of crew-accomplished tasks, and performing tasks beyond the capability of the crew. This paper provides a review of efforts currently in progress in the area of robotic vision. Both systems and algorithms are discussed. The evolution of future vision/sensing is projected to include the fusion of multisensors ranging from microwave to optical with multimode capability to include position, attitude, recognition, and motion parameters. The key feature of the overall system design will be small size and weight, fast signal processing, robust algorithms, and accurate parameter determination.
