Extending Greenstone for Institutional Repositories
We examine the problem of designing a generalized system for building institutional repositories. Widely used schemes such as DSpace are tailored to a particular set of requirements: fixed metadata set; standard view when searching and browsing; pre-determined sequence for depositing items; built-in workflow for vetting new items. In contrast, Fedora builds in flexibility: institutional repositories are just one possible instantiationâhowever generality incurs a high overhead and uptake has been sluggish. This paper shows how existing components of the Greenstone software can be repurposed to provide a generalized institutional repository that falls between these extremes
Wattsup? Motivating reductions in domestic energy consumption using social networks
This paper reports on the design, deployment and evaluation of âWattsupâ, an innovative application which displays live autonomously logged data from the Wattson energy monitor, allowing users to compare domestic energy consumption on Facebook. Discussions and sketches from a workshop with Facebook users were used to develop a final design implemented using the Facebook API. Wattson energy monitors and the Wattsup app were deployed and trialled in eight homes over an eighteen day period in two conditions. In the first condition participants could only access their personal energy data, whilst in the second they could access each othersâ data to make comparisons. A significant reduction in energy was observed in the socially enabled condition. Comments on discussion boards and semi-structured interviews with the participants indicated that the element of competition helped motivate energy savings. The paper argues that socially-mediated banter and competition made for a more enjoyable user experience
Viewpoints: A high-performance high-dimensional exploratory data analysis tool
Scientific data sets continue to increase in both size and complexity. In the
past, dedicated graphics systems at supercomputing centers were required to
visualize large data sets, but as the price of commodity graphics hardware has
dropped and its capability has increased, it is now possible, in principle, to
view large complex data sets on a single workstation. To do this in practice,
an investigator will need software that is written to take advantage of the
relevant graphics hardware. The Viewpoints visualization package described
herein is an example of such software. Viewpoints is an interactive tool for
exploratory visual analysis of large, high-dimensional (multivariate) data. It
leverages the capabilities of modern graphics boards (GPUs) to run on a single
workstation or laptop. Viewpoints is minimalist: it attempts to do a small set
of useful things very well (or at least very quickly) in comparison with
similar packages today. Its basic feature set includes linked scatter plots
with brushing, dynamic histograms, normalization and outlier detection/removal.
Viewpoints was originally designed for astrophysicists, but it has since been
used in a variety of fields that range from astronomy, quantum chemistry, fluid
dynamics, machine learning, bioinformatics, and finance to information
technology server log mining. In this article, we describe the Viewpoints
package and show examples of its usage.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, PASP in press, this version corresponds more

The semantic effects of verb raising and its consequences in second language grammars
This article considers whether highly proficient second language speakers of English can distinguish meaning contrasts associated with constructions where there is a raising be, and constructions where there is a non-raising thematic verb, as illustrated in the difference between (1a) and (1b): 1a. Kim is reading a novel (`event-in-progress/existential ? interpretation
The AFLOW Fleet for Materials Discovery
The traditional paradigm for materials discovery has been recently expanded
to incorporate substantial data driven research. With the intent to accelerate
the development and the deployment of new technologies, the AFLOW Fleet for
computational materials design automates high-throughput first principles
calculations, and provides tools for data verification and dissemination for a
broad community of users. AFLOW incorporates different computational modules to
robustly determine thermodynamic stability, electronic band structures,
vibrational dispersions, thermo-mechanical properties and more. The AFLOW data
repository is publicly accessible online at aflow.org, with more than 1.7
million materials entries and a panoply of queryable computed properties. Tools
to programmatically search and process the data, as well as to perform online
machine learning predictions, are also available.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
Improving situation awareness of a single human operator interacting with multiple unmanned vehicles: first results
In the context of the supervision of one or several unmanned vehicles by a human operator, the design of an adapted user interface is a major challenge. Therefore, in the context of an existing experimental set up composed of a ground station and heterogeneous unmanned ground and air vehicles we aim at redesigning the human-robot interactions to improve the operator's situation awareness. We base our new design on a classical user centered approach
Virtue integrated platform : holistic support for distributed ship hydrodynamic design
Ship hydrodynamic design today is often still done in a sequential approach. Tools used for the different aspects of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation (e.g. wave resistance, cavitation, seakeeping, and manoeuvring), and even for the different levels of detail within a single aspect, are often poorly integrated. VIRTUE (the VIRtual Tank Utility in Europe) project has the objective to develop a platform that will enable various distributed CFD and design applications to be integrated so that they may operate in a unified and holistic manner. This paper presents an overview of the VIRTUE Integrated Platform (VIP), e.g. research background, objectives, current work, user requirements, system architecture, its implementation, evaluation, and current development and future work
