Lightweight Multilingual Software Analysis
Developer preferences, language capabilities and the persistence of older
languages contribute to the trend that large software codebases are often
multilingual, that is, written in more than one computer language. While
developers can leverage monolingual software development tools to build
software components, companies are faced with the problem of managing the
resultant large, multilingual codebases to address issues with security,
efficiency, and quality metrics. The key challenge is to address the opaque
nature of the language interoperability interface: one language calling
procedures in a second (which may call a third, or even back to the first),
resulting in a potentially tangled, inefficient and insecure codebase. An
architecture is proposed for lightweight static analysis of large multilingual
codebases: the MLSA architecture. Its modular and table-oriented structure
addresses the open-ended nature of multiple languages and language
interoperability APIs. We focus here as an application on the construction of
call-graphs that capture both inter-language and intra-language calls. The
algorithms for extracting multilingual call-graphs from codebases are
presented, and several examples of multilingual software engineering analysis
are discussed. The state of the implementation and testing of MLSA is
presented, and the implications for future work are discussed.Comment: 15 page
TriCheck: Memory Model Verification at the Trisection of Software, Hardware, and ISA
Memory consistency models (MCMs) which govern inter-module interactions in a
shared memory system, are a significant, yet often under-appreciated, aspect of
system design. MCMs are defined at the various layers of the hardware-software
stack, requiring thoroughly verified specifications, compilers, and
implementations at the interfaces between layers. Current verification
techniques evaluate segments of the system stack in isolation, such as proving
compiler mappings from a high-level language (HLL) to an ISA or proving
validity of a microarchitectural implementation of an ISA.
This paper makes a case for full-stack MCM verification and provides a
toolflow, TriCheck, capable of verifying that the HLL, compiler, ISA, and
implementation collectively uphold MCM requirements. The work showcases
TriCheck's ability to evaluate a proposed ISA MCM in order to ensure that each
layer and each mapping is correct and complete. Specifically, we apply TriCheck
to the open source RISC-V ISA, seeking to verify accurate, efficient, and legal
compilations from C11. We uncover under-specifications and potential
inefficiencies in the current RISC-V ISA documentation and identify possible
solutions for each. As an example, we find that a RISC-V-compliant
microarchitecture allows 144 outcomes forbidden by C11 to be observed out of
1,701 litmus tests examined. Overall, this paper demonstrates the necessity of
full-stack verification for detecting MCM-related bugs in the hardware-software

Lightweight Call-Graph Construction for Multilingual Software Analysis
Analysis of multilingual codebases is a topic of increasing importance. In
prior work, we have proposed the MLSA (MultiLingual Software Analysis)
architecture, an approach to the lightweight analysis of multilingual
codebases, and have shown how it can be used to address the challenge of
constructing a single call graph from multilingual software with mutual calls.
This paper addresses the challenge of constructing monolingual call graphs in a
lightweight manner (consistent with the objective of MLSA) which nonetheless
yields sufficient information for resolving language interoperability calls. A
novel approach is proposed which leverages information from a
compiler-generated AST to provide the quality of call graph necessary, while
the program itself is written using an Island Grammar that parses the AST
providing the lightweight aspect necessary. Performance results are presented
for a C/C++ implementation of the approach, PAIGE (Parsing AST using Island
Grammar Call Graph Emitter) showing that despite its lightweight nature, it
outperforms Doxgen, is robust to changes in the (Clang) AST, and is not
restricted to C/C++.Comment: 10 page
EbbRT: Elastic Building Block Runtime - case studies
We present a new systems runtime, EbbRT, for cloud hosted applications. EbbRT takes a different approach to the role operating systems play in cloud computing. It supports stitching application functionality across nodes running commodity OSs and nodes running specialized application specific software that only execute what is necessary to accelerate core functions of the application. In doing so, it allows tradeoffs between efficiency, developer productivity, and exploitation of elasticity and scale. EbbRT, as a software model, is a framework for constructing applications as collections of standard application software and Elastic Building Blocks (Ebbs). Elastic Building Blocks are components that encapsulate runtime software objects and are implemented to exploit the raw access, scale and elasticity of IaaS resources to accelerate critical application functionality. An Approach to Agent-Based Service Composition and Its Application to Mobile
This paper describes an architecture model for multiagent systems that was developed in the European project LEAP (Lightweight Extensible Agent Platform). Its main feature is a set of generic services that are implemented independently of the agents and can be installed into the agents by the application developer in a flexible way. Moreover, two applications using this architecture model are described that were also developed within the LEAP project.
