    Estratégias de encaminhamento para recolha oportunística de informação em redes móveis de internet das coisas

    High vehicular mobility in urban scenarios originates inter-vehicles communication discontinuities, a highly important factor when designing a forwarding strategy for vehicular networks. Store, carry and forward mechanisms enable the usage of vehicular networks in a large set of applications, such as sensor data collection in IoT, contributing to smart city platforms. This work focuses on two main topics to enhance the forwarding decision: i) forwarding strategies that make use of location-aware and social-based to perform neighborhood selection, ii) and packet selection mechanisms to provide Quality of Service (QoS). The neighborhood selection is performed through multiple metrics, resulting in three forwarding strategies: (1) Gateway Location Awareness (GLA), a location-aware ranking classification making use of velocity, heading angle and distance to the gateway, to select the vehicles with higher chance to deliver the information in a shorter period of time, thus differentiating nodes through their movement patterns; (2) Aging Social-Aware Ranking (ASAR) that exploits the social behaviours of each vehicle, where nodes are ranked based on a historical contact table, differentiating vehicles with a high number of contacts from those who barely contact with other vehicles; (3) and to merge both location and social aforementioned algorithms, a hybrid approach emerges, thus generating a more intelligent mechanism. Allied to the forwarding criteria, two packet selection mechanisms are proposed to address distinct network functionalities, namely: Distributed Packet Selection, that focuses primarily on data type prioritization and secondly, on packet network lifetime; and Equalized Packet Selection, which uses network metrics to calculate a storage packet ranking. To do so, the packet number of hops, the packet type and packet network lifetime are used. In order to perform the evaluation of the proposed mechanisms, both real and emulation experiments were performed. For each forwarding strategy, it is evaluated the influence of several parameters in the network's performance, as well as comparatively evaluate the strategies in different scenarios. Experiment results, obtained with real traces of both mobility and vehicular connectivity from a real city-scale urban vehicular network, are used to evaluate the performance of GLA, ASAR and HYBRID schemes, and their results are compared to lower- and upper-bounds. Later, these strategies' viability is also validated in a real scenario. The obtained results show that these strategies are a good tradeoff to maximize data delivery ratio and minimize network overhead, while making use of moving networks as a smart city network infrastructure. To evaluate the proposed packet selection mechanisms, a First In First Out packet selection technique is used as ground rule, thus contrasting with the more objective driven proposed techniques. The results show that the proposed mechanisms are capable of provide distinct network functionalities, from prioritizing a packet type to enhancing the network's performance.A elevada mobilidade em cenários veiculares urbanos origina descontinuidades de comunicação entre veículos, um fator altamente importante quando se desenha uma estratégia de encaminhamento para redes veiculares. Mecanismos de store, carry and forward (guardar, carregar e entregar) possibilitam a recolha de dados de sensores em aplicações da Internet das coisas, contribuindo para plataformas de cidades inteligentes. Este trabalho é focado em dois tópicos principais de forma a melhorar a decisão de encaminhamento: i) estratégias de encaminhamento que fazem uso de métricas sociais e de localização para efetuar a seleção de vizinhos, ii) e mecanismos de seleção de pacotes que qualificam a rede com qualidade de serviço. A seleção de vizinhos é feita através de múltiplas métricas, resultando em três estratégias de encaminhamento: Gateway Location Awareness (GLA), uma classificação baseada em localização que faz uso de velocidade, ângulo de direção e distância até uma gateway, para selecionar os veículos com maior probabilidade de entregar a informação num menor período temporal, distinguindo os veículos através dos seus padrões de movimento. Aging Social-Aware Ranking (ASAR) explora os comportamentos sociais de cada veículo, onde é atribuída uma classificação aos veículos com base num histórico de contactos, diferenciando veículos com um alto número de contactos de outros com menos. Por fim, por forma a tirar partido das distintas características de cada uma das destas estratégias, é proposta uma abordagem híbrida, Hybrid between GLA and ASAR (HYBRID). Aliado ao critério de encaminhamento, são propostos dois mecanismos de seleção de pacotes que focam distintas funcionalidades na rede, sendo estes: Distributed Packet Selection, que foca em primeiro lugar na prioritização de determinados tipos de pacotes e em segundo lugar, no tempo de vida que resta ao pacote na rede; e Equalized Packet Selection, que usa métricas da rede para calcular a classificação de cada pacote em memória. Para tal, é usado o numero de saltos do pacote, o tipo de dados do pacote e o tempo de vida que resta ao pacote na rede. De forma a avaliar os mecanismos propostos, foram realizadas experiências em emulador e em cenário real. Para cada estratégia de encaminhamento, e avaliada a influência de vários parâmetros de configuração no desempenho da rede. Para além disso, é feita uma avaliação comparativa entre as várias estratégias em diferentes cenários. Resultados experimentais, obtidos usando traços reais de mobilidade e conetividade de uma rede veicular urbana, são utilizados para avaliar a performance dos esquemas GLA, ASAR e HYRID. Posteriormente, a viabilidade destas estratégias é também validada em cenário real. Os resultados obtidos mostram que estas estratégias são um bom tradeoff para maximizar a taxa de entrega de dados e minimizar a sobrecarga de dados na rede. Para avaliar os mecanismos de seleção de pacotes, um simples mecanismo First In First Out é utilizado como base, contrapondo com as técnicas propostas mais orientadas a objectivos concretos.     Hybrid PRoPHET-Epidemic Routing Protocol for Optimizing Possibility of Sending Messages in Remote Fishermen Residential Area

    Abstract—Limitations of communications facilities and infrastructure in the residential areas of the fishermen create problems of information difficulty. Lack of signal availability from the nearest Base Transceiver Station (BTS) that can reach the fishermen's residential area. A solution is needed that allows the communication path from the residential area of the fishermen to the area available for communication facilities and infrastructure. From this issue, there are several methods that can be used to overcome this problem. One of the methods that are used as a solution is Delay or Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) network architecture, and another method utilize Crowdsource Mobile Access (CrowdMAC) to send message data packets to the destination device. In this paper, we carried out the integration of PRoPHET and Epidemic routing protocols to increase the level of the possibility of sending packets via multiple nodes with crowdsourcing.     Reliable Data Transmission in Challenging Vehicular Network using Delay Tolerant Network

    In the 21st century, there has been an increasing tendency toward the wide adoption of wireless networks and technologies due to their significant advantages such as flexibility, mobility, accessibility, and low cost. Wireless technologies have therefore become essential factors in the improvement of intra-vehicle road safety in Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET), which potentially reduce road traffic accidents by enabling efficient exchange of information between vehicles in the early stages. However, due to the inherent high mobility and rapid change of topology, there are numerous challenges in VANET. Hence, different software packages have been combined in this project to create the VANET environment, whereby the Objective Modular Network Testbed (OMNeT++) and the Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO), along with Vehicles in Network Simulation (VEINS) are integrated to model the VANET environment. Also, Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) are implemented in the Opportunistic Network Environment (ONE) simulator, where the Store-Carry-Forward technique is used to route traffic. When network resources are not limited, a high delivery ratio is possible. However, when network resources are scarce, these protocols will have a low delivery ratio and high overhead. Due to these limitations, in this research, an extensive performance evaluation of various routing protocols for DTN with different buffer management policies, giving insight into the impact of these policies on DTN routing protocol performance has been conducted. The empirical study gave insight into the strengths and limitations of the existing protocols thus enabling the selection of the benchmark protocols utilized in evaluating a new Enhanced Message Replication Technique (EMRT) proposed in this thesis. The main contribution of this thesis is the design, implementation, and evaluation of a novel EMRT that dynamically adjusts the number of message replicas based on a node's ability to quickly disseminate the message and maximize the delivery ratio. EMRT is evaluated using three different quota protocols: Spray&Wait, Encounter Based Routing (EBR), and Destination Based Routing Protocol (DBRP). Simulation results show that applying EMRT to these protocols improves the delivery ratio while reducing overhead ratio and latency average. For example, when combined with Spray&Wait, EBR, and DBRP, the delivery probability is improved by 13%, 8%, and 10%, respectively, while the latency average is reduced by 51%, 14%, and 13%, respectively

    Enhanced Interest Aware PeopleRank for Opportunistic Mobile Social Networks

    Network infrastructures are being continuously challenged by increased demand, resource-hungry applications, and at times of crisis when people need to work from homes such as the current Covid-19 epidemic situation, where most of the countries applied partial or complete lockdown and most of the people worked from home. Opportunistic Mobile Social Networks (OMSN) prove to be a great candidate to support existing network infrastructures. However, OMSNs have copious challenges comprising frequent disconnections and long delays. we aim to enhance the performance of OMSNs including delivery ratio and delay. We build upon an interest-aware social forwarding algorithm, namely Interest Aware PeopleRank (IPeR). We explored three pillars for our contribution, which encompass (1) inspect more than one hop (multiple hops) based on IPeR (MIPeR), (2) by embracing directional forwarding (Directional-IPeR), and (3) by utilizing a combination of Directional forwarding and multi-hop forwarding (DMIPeR). For Directional-IPeR, different values of the tolerance factor of IPeR, such as 25% and 75%, are explored to inspect variations of Directional-IPeR. Different interest distributions and users’ densities are simulated using the Social-Aware Opportunistic Forwarding Simulator (SAROS). The results show that (1) adding multiple hops to IPeR enhanced the delivery ratio, number of reached interested forwarders, and delay slightly. However, it increased the cost and decreased F-measure hugely. Consequently, there is no significant gain in these algorithms. (2) Directional-IPeR-75 performed generally better than IPeR in delivery ratio, and the number of reached interested forwarders. Besides, when some of the uninterested forwarders did not participate in messages delivery, which is a realistic behavior, the performance is enhanced and performed better generally in all metrics compared to IPeR. (3) Adding multiple hops to directional guided IPeR did not gain any enhancement. (4) Directional-IPeR-75 performs better in high densities in all metrics except delay. Even though, it enhances delay in sparse environments. Consequently, it can be utilized in disastrous areas, in which few people are with low connectivity and spread over a big area. In addition, it can be used in rural areas as well where there is no existing networks

    Delay tolerant network for Navy scenarios: quality-based approach

    Mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e TelecomunicaçõesThe navy operations involve several participants that work between them with common objectives and usually under challenged communication conditions. There are natural constrains that are imposed by the operation environment, e.g. hilly terrains. There are also artificial constrains that are created by enemy elements which force conditions to affect the navy operation (or other military forces), e.g. intentional jamming. The military often uses proprietary devices to communicate between them. Despite of the effectiveness of these devices, they are expensive and usually offer a limited range of services. However, the recent technological advances allow the proliferation of several mobile devices with wireless communication capabilities and with the value to easily insert new features, but these devices are still not prepared to military networks in terms of communication. Thus, this dissertation proposes to use Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) with a new routing protocol Quality-PRoPHET (Q-PRoPHET) able to measure the quality of the wireless links and route the information using the connections with best quality, where the probability of transmission is higher. The Q-PRoPHET uses a quality function to evaluate the quality of the connections and a transitive property to route through multiple hops. This algorithm was implemented in IBR-DTN and it was evaluated in three scenarios that emulate three scenarios observed during the navy tactical operations. Two of these scenarios were tested inside a building and the last one was tested in an external environment using real mobility of the nodes. The obtained results show that Q-PRoPHET has better performance than PRoPHET in terms of delivery ratio, endto-end delay and packets transmission, which are critical parameters for the communication in navy operations.As operações da marinha envolvem vários intervenientes que trabalham entre si com objetivos comuns e frequentemente sob condições de comunicação desafiadoras. Existem constrangimentos naturais que são impostos pelo ambiente da operação, por exemplo, geografia acidentada do terreno. Existem também constrangimentos artificiais que são criados por elementos hostis que forçam condições de modo a prejudicar as operações da marinha (ou outras equipas militares), por exemplo, criação de interferência intencional. Os militares geralmente usam equipamentos de comunicação proprietários para comunicar entre si. Apesar da eficácia destes equipamentos, eles são caros e normalmente oferecem uma gama de serviços limitada. Contudo, os recentes avanços tecnológicos permitiram a proliferação de muitos dispositivos portáteis com capacidade de comunicação sem fios e com o valor de acrescentar novas funcionalidades de formas muito simples, mas estes dispositivos ainda não estão adaptados para as redes militares em termos de comunicação. Esta dissertação propõe usar Redes Tolerantes a Atrasos (DTNs) com um novo protocolo de encaminhamento QualityPRoPHET (Q-PRoPHET) capaz de medir a qualidade das ligações sem-fios e encaminhar a informação pelas ligações de melhor qualidade, onde a probabilidade de sucesso da transmissão é maior. O Q-PRoPHET usa uma função de qualidade para avaliar a qualidade das ligações e uma propriedade transitiva para encaminhamento a múltiplos saltos. Este algoritmo foi implementado no IBR-DTN e foi avaliado em três cenários que emulam três cenários observados durante operações táticas da Marinha. Dois destes cenários foram testados dentro de um edifício e o último foi testado em ambiente exterior, recorrendo a mobilidade real dos nós. Os resultados obtidos mostram que o Q-PRoPHET tem melhor desempenho que o PRoPHET em termos de taxa de entrega, tempo de entrega e transmissão de pacotes, que são parâmetros críticos para as comunicações das operações da marinha

    Dtn and non-dtn routing protocols for inter-cubesat communications: A comprehensive survey

    CubeSats, which are limited by size and mass, have limited functionality. These miniaturised satellites suffer from a low power budget, short radio range, low transmission speeds, and limited data storage capacity. Regardless of these limitations, CubeSats have been deployed to carry out many research missions, such as gravity mapping and the tracking of forest fires. One method of increasing their functionality and reducing their limitations is to form CubeSat networks, or swarms, where many CubeSats work together to carry out a mission. Nevertheless, the network might have intermittent connectivity and, accordingly, data communication becomes challenging in such a disjointed network where there is no contemporaneous path between source and destination due to satellites’ mobility pattern and given the limitations of range. In this survey, various inter-satellite routing protocols that are Delay Tolerant (DTN) and Non Delay Tolerant (Non-DTN) are considered. DTN routing protocols are considered for the scenarios where the network is disjointed with no contemporaneous path between a source and a destination. We qualitatively compare all of the above routing protocols to highlight the positive and negative points under different network constraints. We conclude that the performance of routing protocols used in aerospace communications is highly dependent on the evolving topology of the network over time. Additionally, the Non-DTN routing protocols will work efficiently if the network is dense enough to establish reliable links between CubeSats. Emphasis is also given to network capacity in terms of how buffer, energy, bandwidth, and contact duration influence the performance of DTN routing protocols, where, for example, flooding-based DTN protocols can provide superior performance in terms of maximizing delivery ratio and minimizing a delivery delay. However, such protocols are not suitable for CubeSat networks, as they harvest the limited resources of these tiny satellites and they are contrasted with forwarding-based DTN routing protocols, which are resource-friendly and produce minimum overheads on the cost of degraded delivery probability. From the literature, we found that quota-based DTN routing protocols can provide the necessary balance between delivery delay and overhead costs in many CubeSat missions

    Using a Multiobjective Approach to Balance Mission and Network Goals within a Delay Tolerant Network Topology

    This thesis investigates how to incorporate aspects of an Air Tasking Order (ATO), a Communications Tasking Order (CTO), and a Network Tasking Order (NTO) within a cognitive network framework. This was done in an effort to aid the commander and or network operator by providing automation for battlespace management to improve response time and potential inconsistent problem resolution. In particular, autonomous weapon systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were the focus of this research This work implemented a simple cognitive process by incorporating aspects of behavior based robotic control principles to solve the multi-objective optimization problem of balancing both network and mission goals. The cognitive process consisted of both a multi-move look ahead component, in which the future outcomes of decisions were estimated, and a subsumption decision making architecture in which these decision-outcome pairs were selected so they co-optimized the dual goals. This was tested within a novel Air force mission scenario consisting of a UAV surveillance mission within a delay tolerant network (DTN) topology. This scenario used a team of small scale UAVs (operating as a team but each running the cognitive process independently) to balance the mission goal of maintaining maximum overall UAV time-on-target and the network goal of minimizing the packet end-to-end delays experienced within the DTN. The testing was accomplished within a MATLAB discrete event simulation. The results indicated that this proposed approach could successfully simultaneously improve both goals as the network goal improved 52% and the mission goal improved by approximately 6%

    Rede multi-tecnologia para recolha de dados ambientais através de comunicações oportunistas

    mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e TelecomunicaçõesO conceito de Smart City surge da combinação do paradigma de Internet of Things (IoT) sobre contextos urbanos aliado à exploração de soluções de Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC). O típico cenário de Smart City tem de lidar com desafios, tais como as elevadas quantidades de sensores e geradores de dados, dos quais alguns são colocados em dispositivos de grande mobilidade, visando a recolha e geração de todo o tipo de informações e levando ao aumento do número de dispositivos comunicantes. Esta dissertação foca o desenvolvimento e implementação de uma plataforma heterogénea de sonorização ambiental com o objectivo de servir de infraestrutura para aplicações no âmbito das Smart Cities. Esta pretende tirar proveito da utilização de múltiplas tecnologias de comunicação, nomeadamente tecnologias de longo e curto alcance. Para al em disto, visto que a plataforma visa ambientes urbanos, esta tira proveito de uma rede oportunista e tolerante a atrasos, Delay Tolerant Network (DTN), através de entidades m oveis que circulam pela cidade, nomeadamente bicicletas. Assim sendo, esta dissertação propõe: (1) o desenho e desenvolvimento da rede e dos seus constituintes; (2) uma extensão a um protocolo de controlo de acesso ao meio, Medium Access Control (MAC), para a tecnologia LoRa com o objectivo de o dotar compatível para ambientes de gateways múltiplas; (3) novas estratégias de encaminhamento para a rede tolerante a atrasos, tendo em consideração a topologia e as características apresentadas por esta. As avaliações realizadas permitiram concluir que o protocolo MAC para LoRa em ambientes de gateways múltiplas proposto contribui para um aumento da escalabilidade da rede, bem como para uma melhoria do seu desempenho. Relativamente às estratégias de encaminhamento propostas para a DTN, os testes realizados permitiram avaliar o impacto que cada estratégia tem sobre o comportamento da rede, nomeadamente a taxa de entrega dos pacotes de dados, a sobrecarga da rede, o número de pacotes transmitidos, entre outros. Com estes resultados foi possível perceber as in- suficiências que as funcionalidades propostas têm sobre a solução geral, e identificar as caraterísticas necessárias de uma solução escalável para a recolha de dados massivos num ambiente de IoT.The Smart City concept is the combination of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm under an urban context with the exploitation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) solutions. The typical Smart City scenario has to deal with an extensive amount of sensors and data generators, some of them placed in high mobile devices, deployed to collect and generate all type of information which will increase the number of communicating machines. This dissertation focuses on the development and implementation of a heterogeneous environmental sensing platform to serve as an infrastructure for Smart City applications. It aims to take advantage of the use of multiple communication technologies, namely long and short range. Being within an urban environment, the platform bene ts from an opportunistic and Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) through mobile entities that travel over the city, such as bicycles. Therefore, this dissertation proposes: (1) the design and development of the network and its elements; (2) an extension to a LoRa Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol in order to endow it with capabilities to operate in multi-gateway environments; and lastly, (3) new forwarding strategies for the opportunistic network that takes into consideration the network topology. The performed evaluations showed that the proposed multi-gateway LoRa MAC protocol contributes to increase the LoRa network scalability, as well as its performance. The performed tests to the proposed DTN forwarding strategies evaluate the impact of each strategy on the network behavior, namely the delivery ratio, network overhead, number of transmitted packets, among others. As a result, it is possible to perceive which are the in- uences introduced by the proposed functionalities on the overall solution, and identify the characteristics of a scalable solution to collect massive data in an IoT environment
