    Requirements-driven self-optimization of composite services using feedback control

    In an uncertain and changing environment, a composite service needs to continuously optimize its business process and service selection through runtime adaptation. To achieve the overall satisfaction of stakeholder requirements, quality tradeoffs are needed to adapt the composite service in response to the changing environments. Existing approaches on service selection and composition, however, are mostly based on quality preferences and business processes decisions made statically at the design time. In this paper, we propose a requirements-driven self-optimization approach for composite services. It measures the quality of services (QoS), estimates the earned business value, and tunes the preference ranks through a feedback loop. The detection of unexpected earned business value triggers the proposed self-optimization process systematically. At the process level, a preference-based reasoner configures a requirements goal model according to the tuned preference ranks of QoS requirements, reconfiguring the business process according to its mappings from the goal configurations. At the service level, selection decisions are optimized by utilizing the tuned weights of QoS criteria. We used an experimental study to evaluate the proposed approach. Results indicate that the new approach outperforms both fixed-weighted and floating-weighted service selection approaches with respect to earned business value and adaptation flexibility

    Mediation of semantic web services in IRS-III

    Business applications composed of heterogeneous distributed components or Web services need mediation to resolve data and process mismatches at runtime. This paper describes mediation in IRS-III, a framework and platform for developing WSMO-based Semantic Web Services. We present our approach to mediation within Semantic Web Services and highlight the role of WSMO mediator types when solving mismatches at the semantic level between a service requester and a service provider. We describe the components of our mediation framework and how it can handle data, goal and process mediation during the activities of selection, composition and invocation of Semantic Web Services

    Resilient Service Embedding in IoT Networks

    The Internet of Things (IoT) can support a significant number of services including those in smart homes and the automation of industries and public utilities. However, the growth of these deployments has posed a significant challenge especially in terms of how to build such deployments in a highly resilient manner. The IoT devices are prone to unpredicted failures and cyber-attacks, i.e. various types of damage, unreliable wireless connections, limited transmission power, computing ability, and storage space. Thus resilience is essential in IoT networks and in the services they support. In this paper, we introduce a new approach to resilience in IoT service embedding, based on traffic splitting. Our study assesses the power consumption associated with the services embedded and the data delivery time. The results are compared to recent approaches in resilience including redundancy and replication approaches. We constructed an optimization model whose goal is to determine the optimum physical resources to be used to embed the IoT virtual topology, where the latter is derived from a business process (BP). The embedding process makes use of the service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm. The physical resources of interest include IoT links and devices. The model made use of mixed integer linear programming (MILP) with an objective function that aimed to minimize both the total power consumption and the traffic latency. The optimization results show that the power consumption is reduced and the data delivery time is reduced in the service embedding approach where the proposed traffic splitting approach is employed resulting in the selection of energy efficient nodes and routes in the IoT network. Our methods resulted in up to 35% power saving compared to current methods and reduced the average traffic latency by up to 37% by selecting energy-efficient nodes and routes in IoT networks and by optimizing traffic flow to minimize latency

    Multi-perspective requirements engineering for networked business systems: a framework for pattern composition

    How business and software analysts explore, document, and negotiate requirements for enterprise systems is critical to the benefits their organizations will eventually derive. In this paper, we present a framework for analysis and redesign of networked business systems. It is based on libraries of patterns which are derived from existing Internet businesses. The framework includes three perspectives: Economic value, Business processes, and Application communication, each of which applies a goal-oriented method to compose patterns. By means of consistency relationships between perspectives, we demonstrate the usefulness of the patterns as a light-weight approach to exploration of business ideas

    A flexible service selection for executing virtual services

    [EN] With the adoption of a service-oriented paradigm on the Web, many software services are likely to fulfil similar functional needs for end-users. We propose to aggregate functionally equivalent software services within one single virtual service, that is, to associate a functionality, a graphical user interface (GUI), and a set of selection rules. When an end user invokes such a virtual service through its GUI to answer his/her functional need, the software service that best responds to the end-user s selection policy is selected and executed and the result is then rendered to the end-user through the GUI of the virtual service. A key innovation in this paper is the flexibility of our proposed service selection policy. First, each selection policy can refer to heterogeneous parameters (e.g., service price, end-user location, and QoS). Second, additional parameters can be added to an existing or new policy with little investment. Third, the end users themselves define a selection policy to apply during the selection process, thanks to the GUI element added as part of the virtual service design.
