    Optimization of vehicle routing and scheduling with travel time variability - application in winter road maintenance

    This study developed a mathematical model for optimizing vehicle routing and scheduling, which can be used to collect travel time information, and also to perform winter road maintenance operations (e.g., salting, plowing). The objective of this research was to minimize the total vehicle travel time to complete a given set of service tasks, subject to resource constraints (e.g., truck capacity, fleet size) and operational constraints (e.g., service time windows, service time limit). The nature of the problem is to design vehicle routes and schedules to perform the required service on predetermined road segments, which can be interpreted as an arc routing problem (ARP). By using a network transformation technique, an ARP can be transformed into a well-studied node routing problem (NRP). A set-partitioning (SP) approach was introduced to formulate the problem into an integer programming problem (I PP). To solve this problem, firstly, a number of feasible routes were generated, subject to resources and operational constraints. A genetic algorithm based heuristic was developed to improve the efficiency of generating feasible routes. Secondly, the corresponding travel time of each route was computed. Finally, the feasible routes were entered into the linear programming solver (CPL EX) to obtain final optimized results. The impact of travel time variability on vehicle routing and scheduling for transportation planning was also considered in this study. Usually in the concern of vehicle and pedestrian\u27s safety, federal, state governments and local agencies are more leaning towards using a conservative approach with constant travel time for the planning of winter roadway maintenance than an aggressive approach, which means that they would rather have a redundancy of plow trucks than a shortage. The proposed model and solution algorithm were validated with an empirical case study of 41 snow sections in the northwest area of New Jersey. Comprehensive analysis based on a deterministic travel time setting and a time-dependent travel time setting were both performed. The results show that a model that includes time dependent travel time produces better results than travel time being underestimated and being overestimated in transportation planning. In addition, a scenario-based analysis suggests that the current NJDOT operation based on given snow sector design, service routes and fleet size can be improved by the proposed model that considers time dependent travel time and the geometry of the road network to optimize vehicle routing and scheduling. In general, the benefit of better routing and scheduling design for snow plowing could be reflected in smaller minimum required fleet size and shorter total vehicle travel time. The depot location and number of service routes also have an impact on the final optimized results. This suggests that managers should consider the depot location, vehicle fleet sizing and the routing design problem simultaneously at the planning stage to minimize the total cost for snow plowing operations

    Model and algorithm of two-stage distribution location routing with hard time window for city cold-chain logistics

    Taking cold-chain logistics as the research background and combining with the overall optimisation of logistics distribution networks, we develop two-stage distribution location-routing model with the minimum total cost as the objective function and varying vehicle capacity in different delivery stages. A hybrid genetic algorithm is designed based on coupling and collaboration of the two-stage routing and transfer stations. The validity and feasibility of the model and algorithm are verified by conducting a randomly generated test. The optimal solutions for different objective functions of two-stage distribution location-routing are compared and analysed. Results turn out that for different distribution objectives, different distribution schemes should be employed. Finally, we compare the two-stage distribution location-routing to single-stage vehicle routing problems. It is found that a two-stage distribution location-routing system is feasible and effective for the cold-chain logistics network, and can decrease distribution costs for cold-chain logistics enterprises.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Systemic Performance Analysis on Zoning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Based Service Delivery

    A zoning approach that divides an area of interest into multiple sub-areas can be a systemic and strategic solution to safely deploy a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for package delivery services. Following the zoning approach, a UAV can be assigned to one of the sub-areas, taking sole ownership and responsibility of the sub-area. As a result, the need for collision avoidance between units and the complexity of relevant operational activities can be minimized, ensuring both safe and reliable execution of the tasks. Given that the zoning approach involves the demand-server allocation decision, the service quality to customers can also be improved by performing the zoning properly. To illuminate the benefits of the zoning approach to UAV operations from a systemic perspective, this study applies clustering techniques to derive zoning solutions under different scenarios and examines the performance of the solutions using a simulation model. The simulation results demonstrate that the zoning approach can improve the safety of UAV operations, as well as the quality of service to demands

    Controlling the mobility and enhancing the performance of multiple message ferries in delay tolerant networks

    In einem drahtlosen Netzwerk mit isolierten und stationären Knoten können Adhoc und verzögerungstolerante Netzwerk Routing-Protokolle nicht verwendet werden. Message Ferry Netzwerke sind die Lösung für diese Fälle, in denen ein (oder mehrere) Message Ferry Knoten den store-carry-forward Mechanismus verwendet und zwischen den Knoten reist, um Nachrichten auszutauschen. In diesem Fall erfahren die Nachrichten für gewöhnlich eine lange Verzögerung. Um die Performance der Message Ferry Netzwerke zu verbessern, kann die Mobilität der Message Ferry Knoten gesteuert werden. In dieser Doktorarbeit werden zwei Strategien zur Steuerung der Mobilität der Message Ferry Knoten studiert. Die Strategien sind das on-the-fly Entscheidungsverfahren in Ferry Knoten und die offline Wegplanung für Ferry Knoten. Für die on-the-fly Strategie untersucht diese Arbeit Decision-maker in Ferry Knoten, der die Entscheidung auf Grundlage der lokalen Observation eines Ferry Knoten trifft. Zur Koordinierung mehrerer Ferry Knoten, die keine globale Kenntnis über das Netzwerk haben, wird eine indirekte Signalisierung zwischen Ferry Knoten vorgeschlagen. Zur Kooperation der Ferry Knoten für die Zustellung der Nachrichten werden einige Ansätze zum Nachrichtenaustausch zwischen Ferry Knoten vorgeschlagen, in denen der Decision-maker eines Ferry Knotens seine Information mit dem verzögerungstoleranten Router des Ferry Knoten teilt, um die Effizienz des Nachrichtenaustauschs zwischen Ferry Knoten zu verbessern. Umfangreiche Simulationsstudien werden zur Untersuchung der vorgeschlagenen Ansätze und des Einflusses verschiedener Nachrichtenverkehrsszenarien vorgenommen. Außerdem werden verschiedene Szenarien mit unterschiedlicher Anzahl von Ferry Knoten, verschiedener Geschwindigkeit der Ferry Knoten und verschiedener Ansätze zum Nachrichtenaustausch zwischen Ferry Knoten studiert. Zur Evaluierung der offline Wegplanungsstrategie wird das Problem als Multiple Traveling Salesmen Problem (mTSP) modelliert und ein genetischer Algorithmus zur Approximation der Lösung verwendet. Es werden verschiedene Netzwerkarchitekturen zur Pfadplanung der Ferry Knoten vorgestellt und studiert. Schließlich werden die Strategien zur Steuerung der Mobilität der Ferry Knoten verglichen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Performance der Strategien in Bezug auf die Ende-zu-Ende-Verzögerung von dem Szenario des Nachrichtenverkehrs abhängt. In Szenarien, wie Nachrichtenverkehr in Sensor-Netzwerken, in denen ein Knoten die Nachrichten zu allen anderen Knoten sendet oder von allen anderen Knoten empfängt, zeigt die offline Wegplanung, basierend auf der mTSP Lösung, bessere Performance als die on-the-fly Strategie. Andererseits ist die on-the-fly Stratgie eine bessere Wahl in Szenarien wie Nachrichtenaustausch zwischen Rettungskräften während einer Katastrophe, in denen alle drahtlose Knoten die Nachrichten austauschen müssen. Zudem ist die on-the-fly Strategie flexibler, robuster als offline Wegplanung und benötigt keine Initialisierungszeit.In a wireless network with isolated and stationary nodes, ad hoc and delay tolerant routing approaches fail to deliver messages. Message ferry networks are the solution for such networks where one or multiple mobile nodes, i.e. message ferry, apply the store-carry-forward mechanism and travel between nodes to exchange their messages. Messages usually experience a long delivery delay in this type of network. To improve the performance of message ferry networks, the mobility of ferries can be controlled. In this thesis, two main strategies to control mobility of multiple message ferries are studied. The strategies are the on-the-fly mobility decision making in ferries and the offline path planning for ferries. To apply the on-the-fly strategy, this work proposes a decision maker in ferries which makes mobility decisions based on the local observations of ferries. To coordinate multiple ferries, which have no global view from the network, an indirect signaling of ferries is proposed. For cooperation of ferries in message delivery, message forwarding and replication schemes are proposed where the mobility decision maker shares its information with the delay tolerant router of ferries to improve the efficiency of message exchange between ferries. An extensive simulation study is performed to investigate the performance of the proposed schemes and the impact of different traffic scenarios in a network. Moreover, different scenarios with different number of ferries, different speed of ferries and different message exchange approaches between ferries are studied. To study the offline path planning strategy, the problem is modeled as multiple traveling salesmen problem (mTSP) and a genetic algorithm is applied to approximate the solution. Different network architectures are proposed and studied where the path of ferries are planned in advance. Finally, the strategies to control the mobility of ferries are compared. The results show that the performance of each strategy, in terms of the average end-to-end delay of messages, depends on the traffic scenario in a network. In traffic scenarios same as the traffic in sensor networks, where only a single node generates messages to all nodes or receives messages from all node, the offline path planning based on mTSP solution performs better than the on-the-fly decision making. On the other hand, in traffic scenarios same as the traffic in disaster scenarios, where all nodes in a network may send and receive messages, the on-the-fly decision making provides a better performance. Moreover, the on-thy-fly decision making is always more flexible, more robust and does not need any initialization time

    A review on the charging station planning and fleet operation for electric freight vehicles

    Freight electrification introduces new opportunities and challenges for planning and operation. Although research on charging infrastructure planning and operation is widely available for general electric vehicles, unique physical and operational characteristics of EFVs coupled with specific patterns of logistics require dedicated research. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review to gain a better understanding of the state-of-the-art research efforts related to planning (charging station siting and sizing) and operation (routing, charge scheduling, platoon scheduling, and fleet sizing) for EFVs. We classified the existing literature based on the research topics, innovations, methodologies, and solution approaches, and future research directions are identified. Different types of methodologies, such as heuristic, simulation, and mathematical programming approaches, were applied in the reviewed literature where mathematical models account for the majority. We further narrated the specific modeling considerations for different logistic patterns and research goals with proper reasoning. To solve the proposed models, different solution approaches, including exact algorithms, metaheuristic algorithms, and software simulation, were evaluated in terms of applicability, advantages, and disadvantages. This paper helps to draw more attention to the planning and operation issues and solutions for freight electrification and facilitates future studies on EFV to ensure a smooth transition to a clean freight system.Comment: 43 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

    Development of transportation and supply chain problems with the combination of agent-based simulation and network optimization

    Demand drives a different range of supply chain and logistics location decisions, and agent-based modeling (ABM) introduces innovative solutions to address supply chain and logistics problems. This dissertation focuses on an agent-based and network optimization approach to resolve those problems and features three research projects that cover prevalent supply chain management and logistics problems. The first case study evaluates demographic densities in Norway, Finland, and Sweden, and covers how distribution center (DC) locations can be established using a minimizing trip distance approach. Furthermore, traveling time maps are developed for each scenario. In addition, the Nordic area consisting of those three countries is analyzed and five DC location optimization results are presented. The second case study introduces transportation cost modelling in the process of collecting tree logs from several districts and transporting them to the nearest collection point. This research project presents agent-based modelling (ABM) that incorporates comprehensively the key elements of the pick-up and delivery supply chain model and designs the components as autonomous agents communicating with each other. The modelling merges various components such as GIS routing, potential facility locations, random tree log pickup locations, fleet sizing, trip distance, and truck and train transportation. The entire pick-up and delivery operation are modeled by ABM and modeling outcomes are provided by time series charts such as the number of trucks in use, facilities inventory and travel distance. In addition, various scenarios of simulation based on potential facility locations and truck numbers are evaluated and the optimal facility location and fleet size are identified. In the third case study, an agent-based modeling strategy is used to address the problem of vehicle scheduling and fleet optimization. The solution method is employed to data from a real-world organization, and a set of key performance indicators are created to assess the resolution's effectiveness. The ABM method, contrary to other modeling approaches, is a fully customized method that can incorporate extensively various processes and elements. ABM applying the autonomous agent concept can integrate various components that exist in the complex supply chain and create a similar system to assess the supply chain efficiency.Tuotteiden kysyntä ohjaa erilaisia toimitusketju- ja logistiikkasijaintipäätöksiä, ja agenttipohjainen mallinnusmenetelmä (ABM) tuo innovatiivisia ratkaisuja toimitusketjun ja logistiikan ongelmien ratkaisemiseen. Tämä väitöskirja keskittyy agenttipohjaiseen mallinnusmenetelmään ja verkon optimointiin tällaisten ongelmien ratkaisemiseksi, ja sisältää kolme tapaustutkimusta, jotka voidaan luokitella kuuluvan yleisiin toimitusketjun hallinta- ja logistiikkaongelmiin. Ensimmäinen tapaustutkimus esittelee kuinka käyttämällä väestötiheyksiä Norjassa, Suomessa ja Ruotsissa voidaan määrittää strategioita jakelukeskusten (DC) sijaintiin käyttämällä matkan etäisyyden minimoimista. Kullekin skenaariolle kehitetään matka-aikakartat. Lisäksi analysoidaan näistä kolmesta maasta koostuvaa pohjoismaista aluetta ja esitetään viisi mahdollista sijaintia optimointituloksena. Toinen tapaustutkimus esittelee kuljetuskustannusmallintamisen prosessissa, jossa puutavaraa kerätään useilta alueilta ja kuljetetaan lähimpään keräyspisteeseen. Tämä tutkimusprojekti esittelee agenttipohjaista mallinnusta (ABM), joka yhdistää kattavasti noudon ja toimituksen toimitusketjumallin keskeiset elementit ja suunnittelee komponentit keskenään kommunikoiviksi autonomisiksi agenteiksi. Mallinnuksessa yhdistetään erilaisia komponentteja, kuten GIS-reititys, mahdolliset tilojen sijainnit, satunnaiset puunhakupaikat, kaluston mitoitus, matkan pituus sekä monimuotokuljetukset. ABM:n avulla mallinnetaan noutojen ja toimituksien koko ketju ja tuloksena saadaan aikasarjoja kuvaamaan käytössä olevat kuorma-autot, sekä varastomäärät ja ajetut matkat. Lisäksi arvioidaan erilaisia simuloinnin skenaarioita mahdollisten laitosten sijainnista ja kuorma-autojen lukumäärästä sekä tunnistetaan optimaalinen toimipisteen sijainti ja tarvittava autojen määrä. Kolmannessa tapaustutkimuksessa agenttipohjaista mallinnusstrategiaa käytetään ratkaisemaan ajoneuvojen aikataulujen ja kaluston optimoinnin ongelma. Ratkaisumenetelmää käytetään dataan, joka on peräisin todellisesta organisaatiosta, ja ratkaisun tehokkuuden arvioimiseksi luodaan lukuisia keskeisiä suorituskykyindikaattoreita. ABM-menetelmä, toisin kuin monet muut mallintamismenetelmät, on täysin räätälöitävissä oleva menetelmä, joka voi sisältää laajasti erilaisia prosesseja ja elementtejä. Autonomisia agentteja soveltava ABM voi integroida erilaisia komponentteja, jotka ovat olemassa monimutkaisessa toimitusketjussa ja luoda vastaavan järjestelmän toimitusketjun tehokkuuden arvioimiseksi yksityiskohtaisesti.fi=vertaisarvioitu|en=peerReviewed
