    A Genetic Adaptive Algorithm for Data Equalization

    A technique for adjusting the coefficients of adaptive IIR equalizing filters using a genetic algorithm is presented. This technique is shown to be able to significantly reduce the intersymbol interference and noise created by imperfect communications channel transmission characteristics. I. Introduction Equalizing filters can significantly reduce the number of errors due to intersymbol interference over a digital communications channel. The advantages of IIR equalizers over their FIR counterparts have yet to be fully exploited due to the difficulties encountered when adapting IIR filters. In this paper we put forward a method to successfully adapt IIR equalizing filters whilst maintaining filter stability. A brief introduction to data communications, intersymbol interference and equalization is given in Section II.
