    An Experimental Platform for Investigating Decision and Collaboration Technologies in Time-Sensitive Mission Control Operations

    This report describes the conceptual design and detailed architecture of an experimental platform developed to support investigations of novel decision and collaboration technologies for complex, time-critical mission control operations, such as military command and control and emergency response. In particular, the experimental platform is designed to enable exploration of novel interface and interaction mechanisms to support both human-human collaboration and human-machine collaboration for mission control operations involving teams of human operators engaged in supervisory control of intelligent systems, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Further, the experimental platform is designed to enable both co-located and distributed collaboration among operations team members, as well as between team members and relevant mission stakeholders. To enable initial investigations of new information visualization, data fusion, and data sharing methods, the experimental platform provides a synthetic task environment for a representative collaborative time-critical mission control task scenario. This task scenario involves a UAV operations team engaged in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) activities. In the experimental task scenario, the UAV team consists of one mission commander and three operators controlling multiple, homogeneous, semi-autonomous UAVs. In order to complete its assigned missions, the UAV team must coordinate with a ground convoy, an external strike team, and a local joint surveillance and target attack radar system (JSTARS). This report details this task scenario, including the possible simulation events that can occur and the logic governing the simulation dynamics. In order to perform human-in-the-loop experimentation within the synthetic task environment, the experimental platform also consists of a physical laboratory designed to emulate a miniature command center. The Command Center Laboratory comprises a number of large-screen displays, multi-screen operator stations, and mobile, tablet-style devices. This report details the physical configuration and hardware components of this Command Center Laboratory. Details are also provided of the software architecture used to implement the synthetic task environment and experimental interface technologies to facilitate user experiments in this laboratory. The report also summarizes the process of conducting an experiment in the experimental platform, including details of scenario design, hardware and software instrumentation, and participant training. Finally, the report suggests several improvements that could be made to the experimental platform based on insights gained from initial user experiments that have been conducted in this environment.Prepared For Boeing, Phantom Work

    Acceleration of k-Nearest Neighbor and SRAD Algorithms Using Intel FPGA SDK for OpenCL

    Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have been widely used for accelerating machine learning algorithms. However, the high design cost and time for implementing FPGA-based accelerators using traditional HDL-based design methodologies has discouraged users from designing FPGA-based accelerators. In recent years, a new CAD tool called Intel FPGA SDK for OpenCL (IFSO) allowed fast and efficient design of FPGA-based hardware accelerators from high level specification such as OpenCL. Even software engineers with basic hardware design knowledge could design FPGA-based accelerators. In this thesis, IFSO has been used to explore acceleration of k-Nearest-Neighbour (kNN) algorithm and Speckle Reducing Anisotropic Diffusion (SRAD) simulation using FPGAs. kNN is a popular algorithm used in machine learning. Bitonic sorting and radix sorting algorithms were used in the kNN algorithm to check if these provide any performance improvements. Acceleration of SRAD simulation was also explored. The experimental results obtained for these algorithms from FPGA-based acceleration were compared with the state of the art CPU implementation. The optimized algorithms were implemented on two different FPGAs (Intel Stratix A7 and Intel Arria 10 GX). Experimental results show that the FPGA-based accelerators provided similar or better execution time (up to 80X) and better power efficiency (75% reduction in power consumption) than traditional platforms such as a workstation based on two Intel Xeon processors E5-2620 Series (each with 6 cores and running at 2.4 GHz)

    Hardware Architectures and Implementations for Associative Memories : the Building Blocks of Hierarchically Distributed Memories

    During the past several decades, the semiconductor industry has grown into a global industry with revenues around $300 billion. Intel no longer relies on only transistor scaling for higher CPU performance, but instead, focuses more on multiple cores on a single die. It has been projected that in 2016 most CMOS circuits will be manufactured with 22 nm process. The CMOS circuits will have a large number of defects. Especially when the transistor goes below sub-micron, the original deterministic circuits will start having probabilistic characteristics. Hence, it would be challenging to map traditional computational models onto probabilistic circuits, suggesting a need for fault-tolerant computational algorithms. Biologically inspired algorithms, or associative memories (AMs)—the building blocks of cortical hierarchically distributed memories (HDMs) discussed in this dissertation, exhibit a remarkable match to the nano-scale electronics, besides having great fault-tolerance ability. Research on the potential mapping of the HDM onto CMOL (hybrid CMOS/nanoelectronic circuits) nanogrids provides useful insight into the development of non-von Neumann neuromorphic architectures and semiconductor industry. In this dissertation, we investigated the implementations of AMs on different hardware platforms, including microprocessor based personal computer (PC), PC cluster, field programmable gate arrays (FPGA), CMOS, and CMOL nanogrids. We studied two types of neural associative memory models, with and without temporal information. In this research, we first decomposed the computational models into basic and common operations, such as matrix-vector inner-product and k-winners-take-all (k-WTA). We then analyzed the baseline performance/price ratio of implementing the AMs with a PC. We continued with a similar performance/price analysis of the implementations on more parallel hardware platforms, such as PC cluster and FPGA. However, the majority of the research emphasized on the implementations with all digital and mixed-signal full-custom CMOS and CMOL nanogrids. In this dissertation, we draw the conclusion that the mixed-signal CMOL nanogrids exhibit the best performance/price ratio over other hardware platforms. We also highlighted some of the trade-offs between dedicated and virtualized hardware circuits for the HDM models. A simple time-multiplexing scheme for the digital CMOS implementations can achieve comparable throughput as the mixed-signal CMOL nanogrids

    Navigation for automatic guided vehicles using omnidirectional optical sensing

    Thesis (M. Tech. (Engineering: Electrical)) -- Central University of technology, Free State, 2013Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are being used more frequently in a manufacturing environment. These AGVs are navigated in many different ways, utilising multiple types of sensors for detecting the environment like distance, obstacles, and a set route. Different algorithms or methods are then used to utilise this environmental information for navigation purposes applied onto the AGV for control purposes. Developing a platform that could be easily reconfigured in alternative route applications utilising vision was one of the aims of the research. In this research such sensors detecting the environment was replaced and/or minimised by the use of a single, omnidirectional Webcam picture stream utilising an own developed mirror and Perspex tube setup. The area of interest in each frame was extracted saving on computational recourses and time. By utilising image processing, the vehicle was navigated on a predetermined route. Different edge detection methods and segmentation methods were investigated on this vision signal for route and sign navigation. Prewitt edge detection was eventually implemented, Hough transfers used for border detection and Kalman filtering for minimising border detected noise for staying on the navigated route. Reconfigurability was added to the route layout by coloured signs incorporated in the navigation process. The result was the manipulation of a number of AGV’s, each on its own designated coloured signed route. This route could be reconfigured by the operator with no programming alteration or intervention. The YCbCr colour space signal was implemented in detecting specific control signs for alternative colour route navigation. The result was used generating commands to control the AGV through serial commands sent on a laptop’s Universal Serial Bus (USB) port with a PIC microcontroller interface board controlling the motors by means of pulse width modulation (PWM). A total MATLAB® software development platform was utilised by implementing written M-files, Simulink® models, masked function blocks and .mat files for sourcing the workspace variables and generating executable files. This continuous development system lends itself to speedy evaluation and implementation of image processing options on the AGV. All the work done in the thesis was validated by simulations using actual data and by physical experimentation

    Exploring Processor and Memory Architectures for Multimedia

    Multimedia has become one of the cornerstones of our 21st century society and, when combined with mobility, has enabled a tremendous evolution of our society. However, joining these two concepts introduces many technical challenges. These range from having sufficient performance for handling multimedia content to having the battery stamina for acceptable mobile usage. When taking a projection of where we are heading, we see these issues becoming ever more challenging by increased mobility as well as advancements in multimedia content, such as introduction of stereoscopic 3D and augmented reality. The increased performance needs for handling multimedia come not only from an ongoing step-up in resolution going from QVGA (320x240) to Full HD (1920x1080) a 27x increase in less than half a decade. On top of this, there is also codec evolution (MPEG-2 to H.264 AVC) that adds to the computational load increase. To meet these performance challenges there has been processing and memory architecture advances (SIMD, out-of-order superscalarity, multicore processing and heterogeneous multilevel memories) in the mobile domain, in conjunction with ever increasing operating frequencies (200MHz to 2GHz) and on-chip memory sizes (128KB to 2-3MB). At the same time there is an increase in requirements for mobility, placing higher demands on battery-powered systems despite the steady increase in battery capacity (500 to 2000mAh). This leaves negative net result in-terms of battery capacity versus performance advances. In order to make optimal use of these architectural advances and to meet the power limitations in mobile systems, there is a need for taking an overall approach on how to best utilize these systems. The right trade-off between performance and power is crucial. On top of these constraints, the flexibility aspects of the system need to be addressed. All this makes it very important to reach the right architectural balance in the system. The first goal for this thesis is to examine multimedia applications and propose a flexible solution that can meet the architectural requirements in a mobile system. Secondly, propose an automated methodology of optimally mapping multimedia data and instructions to a heterogeneous multilevel memory subsystem. The proposed methodology uses constraint programming for solving a multidimensional optimization problem. Results from this work indicate that using today’s most advanced mobile processor technology together with a multi-level heterogeneous on-chip memory subsystem can meet the performance requirements for handling multimedia. By utilizing the automated optimal memory mapping method presented in this thesis lower total power consumption can be achieved, whilst performance for multimedia applications is improved, by employing enhanced memory management. This is achieved through reduced external accesses and better reuse of memory objects. This automatic method shows high accuracy, up to 90%, for predicting multimedia memory accesses for a given architecture
