An Authorisation Scenario for S-OGSA
The Semantic Grid initiative aims to exploit knowledge in the Grid to increase the automation, interoperability and flexibility of Grid middleware and applications. To bring a principled approach to developing Semantic Grid Systems, and to outline their core capabilities and behaviors, we have devised a reference Semantic Grid Architecture called S-OGSA. We present the implementation of an S-OGSA observant semantically-enabled Grid authorization scenario, which demonstrates two aspects: 1) the roles of different middleware components, be them semantic or non-semantic, and 2) the utility of explicit semantics for undertaking an essential activity in the Grid: resource access control

Enterprise application reuse: Semantic discovery of business grid services
Web services have emerged as a prominent paradigm for the development of distributed software systems as they provide the potential for software to be modularized in a way that functionality can be described, discovered and deployed in a platform independent manner over a network (e.g., intranets, extranets and the Internet). This paper examines an extension of this paradigm to encompass ‘Grid Services’, which enables software capabilities to be recast with an operational focus and support a heterogeneous mix of business software and data, termed a Business Grid - "the grid of semantic services". The current industrial representation of services is predominantly syntactic however, lacking the fundamental semantic underpinnings required to fulfill the goals of any semantically-oriented Grid. Consequently, the use of semantic technology in support of business software heterogeneity is investigated as a likely tool to support a diverse and distributed software inventory and user. Service discovery architecture is therefore developed that is (a) distributed in form, (2) supports distributed service knowledge and (3) automatically extends service knowledge (as greater descriptive precision is inferred from the operating application system). This discovery engine is used to execute several real-word scenarios in order to develop and test a framework for engineering such grid service knowledge. The examples presented comprise software components taken from a group of Investment Banking systems. Resulting from the research is a framework for engineering servic
The Knowledge Life Cycle for e-learning
In this paper, we examine the semantic aspects of e-learning from both pedagogical and technological points of view. We suggest that if semantics are to fulfil their potential in the learning domain then a paradigm shift in perspective is necessary, from information-based content delivery to knowledge-based collaborative learning services. We propose a semantics driven Knowledge Life Cycle that characterises the key phases in managing semantics and knowledge, show how this can be applied to the learning domain and demonstrate the value of semantics via an example of knowledge reuse in learning assessment management
Grid Metadata Lifetime Control in ActOn
In the Semantic Grid, metadata, as first class citizens, should be maintained up to-date in a cost-effective manner. This includes maxi missing the automation of different aspects of the metadata lifecycle, managing the evolution and change of metadata in distributed contexts, and synchronizing adequately the evolution of all these related entities. In this paper, we introduce a semantic model and its operations which is designed for supporting dynamic metadata management in Active Ontology (Act On), a semantic information integration approach for highly dynamic information sources. Finally, we illustrate the Act On-based metadata lifetime control by EGEE examples
Version Control in Online Software Repositories
Software version control repositories provide a uniform and stable interface to manage documents and their version histories. Unfortunately, Open Source systems, for example, CVS, Subversion, and GNU Arch are not well suited to highly collaborative environments and fail to track semantic changes in repositories. We introduce document provenance as our Description Logic framework to track the semantic changes in software repositories and draw interesting results about their historic behaviour using a rule-based inference engine. To support the use of this framework, we have developed our own online collaborative tool, leveraging the fluency of the modern WikiWikiWeb
Mobile Edge Computing Empowers Internet of Things
In this paper, we propose a Mobile Edge Internet of Things (MEIoT)
architecture by leveraging the fiber-wireless access technology, the cloudlet
concept, and the software defined networking framework. The MEIoT architecture
brings computing and storage resources close to Internet of Things (IoT)
devices in order to speed up IoT data sharing and analytics. Specifically, the
IoT devices (belonging to the same user) are associated to a specific proxy
Virtual Machine (VM) in the nearby cloudlet. The proxy VM stores and analyzes
the IoT data (generated by its IoT devices) in real-time. Moreover, we
introduce the semantic and social IoT technology in the context of MEIoT to
solve the interoperability and inefficient access control problem in the IoT
system. In addition, we propose two dynamic proxy VM migration methods to
minimize the end-to-end delay between proxy VMs and their IoT devices and to
minimize the total on-grid energy consumption of the cloudlets, respectively.
Performance of the proposed methods are validated via extensive simulations
