    Spectrum cartography techniques, challenges, opportunities, and applications: A survey

    The spectrum cartography finds applications in several areas such as cognitive radios, spectrum aware communications, machine-type communications, Internet of Things, connected vehicles, wireless sensor networks, and radio frequency management systems, etc. This paper presents a survey on state-of-the-art of spectrum cartography techniques for the construction of various radio environment maps (REMs). Following a brief overview on spectrum cartography, various techniques considered to construct the REMs such as channel gain map, power spectral density map, power map, spectrum map, power propagation map, radio frequency map, and interference map are reviewed. In this paper, we compare the performance of the different spectrum cartography methods in terms of mean absolute error, mean square error, normalized mean square error, and root mean square error. The information presented in this paper aims to serve as a practical reference guide for various spectrum cartography methods for constructing different REMs. Finally, some of the open issues and challenges for future research and development are discussed.publishedVersio

    Wireless Monitoring Systems for Long-Term Reliability Assessment of Bridge Structures based on Compressed Sensing and Data-Driven Interrogation Methods.

    The state of the nation’s highway bridges has garnered significant public attention due to large inventories of aging assets and insufficient funds for repair. Current management methods are based on visual inspections that have many known limitations including reliance on surface evidence of deterioration and subjectivity introduced by trained inspectors. To address the limitations of current inspection practice, structural health monitoring (SHM) systems can be used to provide quantitative measures of structural behavior and an objective basis for condition assessment. SHM systems are intended to be a cost effective monitoring technology that also automates the processing of data to characterize damage and provide decision information to asset managers. Unfortunately, this realization of SHM systems does not currently exist. In order for SHM to be realized as a decision support tool for bridge owners engaged in performance- and risk-based asset management, technological hurdles must still be overcome. This thesis focuses on advancing wireless SHM systems. An innovative wireless monitoring system was designed for permanent deployment on bridges in cold northern climates which pose an added challenge as the potential for solar harvesting is reduced and battery charging is slowed. First, efforts advancing energy efficient usage strategies for WSNs were made. With WSN energy consumption proportional to the amount of data transmitted, data reduction strategies are prioritized. A novel data compression paradigm termed compressed sensing is advanced for embedment in a wireless sensor microcontroller. In addition, fatigue monitoring algorithms are embedded for local data processing leading to dramatic data reductions. In the second part of the thesis, a radical top-down design strategy (in contrast to global vibration strategies) for a monitoring system is explored to target specific damage concerns of bridge owners. Data-driven algorithmic approaches are created for statistical performance characterization of long-term bridge response. Statistical process control and reliability index monitoring are advanced as a scalable and autonomous means of transforming data into information relevant to bridge risk management.     Autoregressive process parameters estimation from Compressed Sensing measurements and Bayesian dictionary learning

    The main contribution of this thesis is the introduction of new techniques which allow to perform signal processing operations on signals represented by means of compressed sensing. Exploiting autoregressive modeling of the original signal, we obtain a compact yet representative description of the signal which can be estimated directly in the compressed domain. This is the key concept on which the applications we introduce rely on. In fact, thanks to proposed the framework it is possible to gain information about the original signal given compressed sensing measurements. This is done by means of autoregressive modeling which can be used to describe a signal through a small number of parameters. We develop a method to estimate these parameters given the compressed measurements by using an ad-hoc sensing matrix design and two different coupled estimators that can be used in different scenarios. This enables centralized and distributed estimation of the covariance matrix of a process given the compressed sensing measurements in a efficient way at low communication cost. Next, we use the characterization of the original signal done by means of few autoregressive parameters to improve compressive imaging. In particular, we use these parameters as a proxy to estimate the complexity of a block of a given image. This allows us to introduce a novel compressive imaging system in which the number of allocated measurements is adapted for each block depending on its complexity, i.e., spatial smoothness. The result is that a careful allocation of the measurements, improves the recovery process by reaching higher recovery quality at the same compression ratio in comparison to state-of-the-art compressive image recovery techniques. Interestingly, the parameters we are able to estimate directly in the compressed domain not only can improve the recovery but can also be used as feature vectors for classification. In fact, we also propose to use these parameters as more general feature vectors which allow to perform classification in the compressed domain. Remarkably, this method reaches high classification performance which is comparable with that obtained in the original domain, but with a lower cost in terms of dataset storage. In the second part of this work, we focus on sparse representations. In fact, a better sparsifying dictionary can improve the Compressed Sensing recovery performance. At first, we focus on the original domain and hence no dimensionality reduction by means of Compressed Sensing is considered. In particular, we develop a Bayesian technique which, in a fully automated fashion, performs dictionary learning. More in detail, using the uncertainties coming from atoms selection in the sparse representation step, this technique outperforms state-of-the-art dictionary learning techniques. Then, we also address image denoising and inpainting tasks using the aforementioned technique with excellent results. Next, we move to the compressed domain where a better dictionary is expected to provide improved recovery. We show how the Bayesian dictionary learning model can be adapted to the compressive case and the necessary assumptions that must be made when considering random projections. Lastly, numerical experiments confirm the superiority of this technique when compared to other compressive dictionary learning techniques

    Wavelet Power and Shannon Entropy Applied to Acoustic Emission Signals for Corrosion Detection and Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete

    Acoustic emission (AE) signals detected from corrosion test on a steel reinforced concrete beam subjected to the coupling effects of corrosive wet-dry cycles and static load are analyzed by power spectral density, wavelet transform, and Shannon entropy. The degradation process of the corroded reinforced concrete beam can be divided into four stages on the basis of the accumulated event number (AEN). Due to the difference of material properties, steel reinforcement and concrete matrix have distinguished AE features. The time-frequency characteristics of AE signals can reflect the microstructural degradation mechanism of steel corrosion and concrete cracking. The corrosion evaluation entails investigating the evolution of the wavelet power mathematically by Shannon entropy. The frequency-entropy clearly exhibits the relative power distribution of AE signal in a certain frequency region. With the accumulation of steel corrosion and concrete deterioration, the increment of the overall entropy integration is considerably apparent. The variation of frequency-entropy curve reveals the corrosion revolution of the reinforced concrete members under static load, which is represented by a transforming from corrosion-induced micro cracking to load-induced localized cracking
